WHEELER, Head Coach SCHWERDT, Assistant Coach DAMON AND PYTHIAS When Howard A- Wheeler took over the reins as Director of Athletics in 1929, he found a lot of willingness — merely that and hardly anything more. Wheeler had just come out of the University of Illinois, having been under the watchful eye of Robert Zuppke, who still directs things athletic for the Illini But Wheeler was equal to the task. In ten years his football teams have won four cham- pionships, three basketball championships, and two track crowns. Noteworthy among the basketball achievements is the fact that the Crusaders have been in the finals of every conference tournament. During the decade. Wheeler has had some accomplished assistants. Arthur Baker. Eddie Cahill. and Reyman Bonar — all had much to do with the phenomenal success of the Crusaders. Last year Joseph Schwerdt. a graduate of North Carolina State College in 1938, came to Abbey as a right-hand man to Wheeler. Rated the best athlete ever produced at Everett High School in Massachusetts. Schwerdt is counted on to be a permanent fixture of the Crusader coaching staff. Much publicity is given to the pleasant and friendly relationships that exist among the various students who make up the Abbey ' s athletic rosters. A word on the point may be said concerning Coaches Wheeler and Schwerdt. Theirs is truly a relationship conducive to success in mutual interests, and it happens that their interest is success and happiness for the Crusaders. That their interest has been realized is manifested by the Wheeler-Schwerdt contribution to the Abbey ' s amazing football record which now stands at seventy games won, five games tied, and twelve games lost.
