Art Editor ' THE 1939 ' My PRESENTS THE 530G2 FOOTBALL BASKETBALL FOUR CHAMPIONS GRAND SLAM BDXING TRACK WHEELER, Head Coach SCHWERDT, Assistant Coach DAMON AND PYTHIAS When Howard A- Wheeler took over the reins as Director of Athletics in 1929, he found a lot of willingness — merely that and hardly anything more. Wheeler had just come out of the University of Illinois, having been under the watchful eye of Robert Zuppke, who still directs things athletic for the Illini But Wheeler was equal to the task. In ten years his football teams have won four cham- pionships, three basketball championships, and two track crowns. Noteworthy among the basketball achievements is the fact that the Crusaders have been in the finals of every conference tournament. During the decade. Wheeler has had some accomplished assistants. Arthur Baker. Eddie Cahill. and Reyman Bonar — all had much to do with the phenomenal success of the Crusaders. Last year Joseph Schwerdt. a graduate of North Carolina State College in 1938, came to Abbey as a right-hand man to Wheeler. Rated the best athlete ever produced at Everett High School in Massachusetts. Schwerdt is counted on to be a permanent fixture of the Crusader coaching staff. Much publicity is given to the pleasant and friendly relationships that exist among the various students who make up the Abbey ' s athletic rosters. A word on the point may be said concerning Coaches Wheeler and Schwerdt. Theirs is truly a relationship conducive to success in mutual interests, and it happens that their interest is success and happiness for the Crusaders. That their interest has been realized is manifested by the Wheeler-Schwerdt contribution to the Abbey ' s amazing football record which now stands at seventy games won, five games tied, and twelve games lost. DEDICATION DURING this past year we have had just reason to feel proud of out- Crusaders. They have brought honor to themselves and to Belm ont Abbey: for in four sports — football, basketball, boxing and track— they have made themselves champions. Coaches. Howard Wheeler. Joe Schwerdt. along with amiable Tom Hanna. have molded their men into teams that are known throughout the South for clean play, undaunted spirit and fight. So. to you. the Champion Abbey Crusaders, and. to you. Humpy Wheeler. Joe Schiverdt and Tom Hanna. we respectfully dedicate this 19 39 edition of THE Spirh. Indeed, it has been. The athletic tea ms have been outstanding and the social events have been complimented quite highly. The Rector has announced that scholastic grades have shown marked improvement and, above all, there has prevailed a closer and more friendly relationship between the faculty and the students. For the Class of 1939 — the graduating class — this publication will be the source of many happy, dreamy memories when the things of school days have been all but put aside. This is our purpose. Big Hessian He fills the air with barbarous dissonance. A bit happy-go-lucky, he has had his hand in a wide variety of campus activities. Holly, n. c. •Johnny Not harsh and crabbed as dull fools suppose. Here is one of the school ' s best golfers. Perhaps he ' s a good golfer because of his quiet, reserved, and steady manner. His daily journey from Mt. Holly doesn ' t permit par- ticipation in many activities, but Johnny is a real part of the Abbey. Joseph Conners Savannah. Ga. FOOTSIE Come, and trip it as you go. on the light fantastic toe! Energetic, hard-working, Joe is Student Council President. Piedmont Club President and a mainstay in the Glee Club of which, incidentally, he is president. His pet aversion is physics; his greatest love. rest. Robert Harris Belmont. N. C. Robin The hidden soul of harmony. Another old-timer at Abbey; rather re- served, spends a goodly share of his time in the Piedmont Pool Room. One of the class pluggers. Lawrence Hill Nazareth. N. C. Larry Come, but keep thy wonted state. A frank, likeable, not-too-quiet chap who participates in a varied program of extra- curricula activities and ranks high scholas- tically. The lad with the perpetual smile who came 11,000 miles to study law with an eye on the future governorship of Guam. A well- mannered, congenial, interesting product of his island home. Ordinarily quiet and reserved, he can be full of deviltry when the occasion demands. Out- standing athlete, student leader and good scholar. Dan can be nothing else but a suc- cess. Walter Pawloski Shadyside, Ohio Vudgie The cynosure of neighboring eyes. Perhaps the finest halfback ever to cavort for the Crusaders. Walt is a terror on a gridiron and in the Iris! Has a definite interest in Washington, and it isn ' t the White House. Can ' t appreci- ate the crack: I ' m one of the Jones boys. Buck ' ll be a journalist, and a real one. Paul Titman Lowell, N. C. Titmouse Most musical, most melancholy. One of our better musicians. Has de- veloped a style of his own at the piano. Plays accompaniment for the Glee Club. A good student whose chief interests lay in music, literature, and botany. U. N. C. next year for an extensive study of nature lore, Vernon Von Drehle High Point, N. C. Doodle To walk the studious cloisters pale. ' ' One of the most active and most popu- lar of our graduates: takes part in most of the cultural and social activities and an honor student. Under his leadership the De- bating Society is coming back into its own. He is Contact ' s Sportator and an officer of the Piedmont Club. Frank York White Plains, n. Y. Sumner A four-year Abbeyman. Though he is an off-campus student. Abbey wouldn ' t be com- plete without him around. Ben Another four-year man, Ben is a land- mark around here. A champion speller (in his own way), he is entru sted with the Circulation department of Contact and does a swell job. Anthony Burke, Jr. Norfolk, Va, Tonie The Abbey Adonis — broad shouldered, wasped waist and legs like — Tonie is really popular cm the campus and off, not only for his fighting prowess. his unusual strength, but above all for his whole- some personality. Salutator- ian of his class, the accomplishment is all the more remarkable when one remembers that three years ago, his first at Abbey, Senor Castro the Younger could not speak English. A Rambler basketeer, too, — will probably stay in Cuba next year. Leo F. Cotter Augusta. Ga. Cap A new arrival this year, Cap has become part of us. He is an especially quiet lad of the Still Waters . . ., etc. type. A good billiard player and a card shark, he will take on anyone. Plans to take over his Dad ' s big store in Augusta next year. We vouch that he ' ll be a good business man. Victor Kelley Greensboro, N. C. Vic One year and graduation— quite a feat! But hold On, folks, Vic was at Nazareth before coming here! A tonsorial artist — at fifteen cents a shot — A ic has probably gotten into the hair of everybody on the Abbey campus. Specializes in acting mystified, sleeping, and — blondes. Famous football team, he will return to Abbey next with the assurance of repeating his football, basket- ball and track records. You should see him throw that javelin! John F. MacClements Charlotte, N. C. Mac The social leader of the class. Mac is the gentle- man chauffeur just when you need him. If any date is being planned, he ' ll be on hand. Back to the Abbey in the fall and will continue his unique place among the students. A swell fellow. Ralph Ray. Jr. Gastonia, N. C. Ralph The Michelangelo of the campus, Ralph is clever with his charcoal and paint. The sketches in this annual are his work. We feel sure thai the world will hear much about him in the years to come. Ben Pride of the home-folks, Ben is a master of doing favors. His good-looking V-S has been used in many an emergency. His greatest problem is trying to dope out when the Crusaders will lose a game. ATHLETICS WHEELER, Head Coach SCHWERDT, Assistant Coach FOOTBALL Increasing their chain of victories which for three years has been broken by but one tie, the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey crashed, smashed, and banged their way through nine straight games not only to win the N. C. Junior Col- lege championship, but to the right of claiming the national Junior College football title! The Wheelermcn had the perfect season. Spurred on by the indomitable spirit shown by Coaches Howard Wheeler and Joe Schwerdt. the Abbeys emerged from their nine encounters unbeaten, untied, and unscored on. and, in the course of events, piled up 273 tallies to their opponents nothing! Besides these triumphs the Crusaders managed to place four men on the All-State first team and three on the second. Ed Bradley, Walt Pawloski. Joe Cuffaro, and Captain Larry Visnic merited the first team. Visnic was likewise captain of the All-Star aggregate. Danny Moore, Earl Fesperman. and Earl Marshall were those on the runner-up eleven. FOOTBALL Could a season have been more perfect ' Could those eight sterling athletes who bid the Abbey farewell this year by route of the cap and gown leave a better memento than that of a good job perfectly done. They have striven and won. both on the gridiron and in the classroom. May they meet with equal success in all their undertakings. Al Matthews — they all sparkled in their own light; still, were not the squad the coordinated super-structure that it was. it could never have been a great eleven. Night Shots of the Citadel Game BASKETBALL In a grueling seventeen-game schedule, preparatory to the Conference Tour- nament, the Crusaders suffered but one defeat (at the hands of Lees-McRae. 44-42, ) and piled up 808 points to the 556 scored by opponents. Led by Bob Kupsky, who racked up 254 of the Abbey pointers, and sparked by the spirit and leadership of Captain Dan Moore, Coach Wheeler ' s men left little doubt in the minds of anyone as to their chances of copping the tourney for a second straight year. The tournament itself was such as would commonly be termed a honey. After having beaten a nifty Boiling Springs squad in the opening play-off, 40 to 33, the Crusaders went on to trounce Oak Ridge in the semi-finals, 47-23. The Abbeys left the floor the next night with the Championship Trophy again, having downed second-seeded Campbell. 46 to 28. The presentation of awards was an inspiring ceremony, climaxing a glorious season. The 1939 All-Conference team was announced at that time and the committee made up of conference coaches selected two of the Wheelermen on the first team: Bob Kupsky and Bennie Cunningham. Captain Danny Moore and big Earl Mar- shall gained berths on the second quintet. Bill Copeland and Walt Pawloski turned in stellar performances, while Lascara, Kabas, Modra. and Sikish showed up well under the pressure of the fast-moving tourney. The Student Body and Coach Wheeler — the whole of Belmont Abbey College must bid adieu to four of her favorite sons this year: for Dan Moore, Frank Modra, Walt Pawloski, and Johnny Red Kabas must leave in quest of greater laurels, both academically and athletically. To these boys especially we address commendations for the great work they have done, both for the Abbey and for themselves, in playing the clean, spirited brand of basketball that has so exemplified the athletic teams of Belmont Abbey. Under the capable direction of Father Daniel, the prep- sters were transformed almost overnight from a group of ragged individual players into as smooth a quintet as one could expect to find. With six veterans remaining from last year ' s squad, along with a quartet of rookies with much promise, the green-clad cagers rounded out into a team that won eleven of a stiff twenty-game schedule. While Joe Haverty and Jose Castro led the Rambler attack, it was the ability of Captain Butch Braum and the defensive strength of Joe Joseph that gave the green men of the hardcourt that primary requisite — balance. Beside these four big guns, Ed Rankin, Arturo Castro, and Bill Van Sant did some fine work for the prepsters: while George Walker, Jack Cotter and Jose Del Cueto likewise supplied real punch when called upon. In the Gaston County high school tournament in February at Gastonia the Ramblers met their nemesis in the form of a lanky, strong and able crew representing Stanley high; who, incidentally, went on to win the champion- ship. What the lads from Stanley had on the Abbey Preps in size and ability, was counteracted by the fight and spirit displayed by our boys. But fight was not enough, and Father Dan ' s charges went down fighting. Sincere appreciation is to be expressed to Jack Weston and Jimmy Devenny for their splendid cooperation in managing the Rambler basketeers during the season. Both boys are headed for similar posts on Humpy Wheeler ' s college squads in future years. The outlook for next year is more than bright. With but two members of the squad graduating, next season ' s squad should be a formidable aggrega- tion of veterans.
