On these pages are recorded some of the events and activities in which We have participated throughout our senior year. If in some distant year, this annual recalls some nostalgic memory in your high school career, our purpose will have been fulfilled. THE 1957 BRONCO STAFF DDEDIZRIFUFJX DEDICATION We, the senior class of 1957, dedicate The Bronco to Mattie Farmer, who has been in charge of the school lunch program since We began our high school career. Her devotion to her duty, interest in the activities of the school and her pleasant personality have won her many friends. We take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to Mattie, whose efforts have gone unrewarded a long time. Broncos Enjoy Successful Season The Broncos enjoyed their most successful season since they won the conference in 1945. They started off by winning two, a 27-0 victory over Garner, and a 39-0 win over the Britt Eagles. The following week Northwood, the defending champs, handed our Broncs an 18-7 loss. Fired up after that stinging defeat by Northwood, the Belmond gridders traveled to Buffalo Center and romped off with a 2.6-13 decision. The next week Lake Mills gave the Broncos their only other defeat of the sea- son after a hard-fought battle, 12-7. From then on the Broncs were victorious, beating Forest City 20-7, St. Edmund's CFort Dodgej 34-7, and Twin Rivers 33-0. The highlight of the season was a 19-0 victory over our county rival Clarion, to round out the season with 7 wins and 2 losses. The all-conference team included nine Bronco gridders. Those on first team were Leonard Steen- block, tackle, Steve McLaughlin, guard, and Bill Murray, utility back. Tom McNulty, back, was on second team. Five Broncos made honorable mention. They were: Roland Jenison and Dave Long, backs, Jon Mehus, endg Gary Ersland, tackle, and Merrill Jenison, guard. The Broncos were handicapped this year by lack of size and weight. Operating from the split-T, an offense new to the Broncos, they made up for their weight deficiency with fast and aggressive ball. Basketball Summary Belmond finished their 1956-57 basketball campaign with a 9-9 won loss season with a win over both Eagle Grove and Algona. When they started competition with their own.conference foes the going got tougher. The Broncos fought very hard, but were outscored by their much taller opponents. As the season progressed the team improved vastly, and wound up defeating Holy Family fMason City, by a decisive margin, and Clear Lake in a hard-fought battle which went beyond regulation play. The Broncs, not up to par, lost a nip and tuck battle to Franklin Consolidated in their first sec- tional tournament clash, 64-57. Franklin pulled away in the waning stages of the game on free throws resulting from fouls acquired as Belmond tried desperately to steal the ball. Until then, neither team had enjoyed more than a three point lead at any one time. The leadingscorers for the season were Jerry.Chandler who scored 234 points for a 13 point average, Larry Schimp had 182 points for a 10.1 average, Larry Kinseth had 169 points for a 9.4 average, and Bill Murray who had 130 points for 7. Z average. Four Broncs made all-conference honors. They were Jerry Chandler, second team, with Larry Schimp, Roland Jenison, and Larry Kinseth receiving honorable mention. Seven seniors will be lost from the squad through graduation. However, the strong Fresh-Soph team will greatly strengthen Belmond's outlook for future years. Will it go in? WhcJ'll get it? The Christmas Concert .W h,,. , ..........aAa.w Y . Music Activities This year's concert band was made up of fifty-seven members and directed by Mr. John Duncan. In November the members began to practice. Their first performance was the Winter Concert in January. In February members of the band traveled by bus to Wav- erly to hear the Boston Pops Orchestra. ln March a tape recording of several musical numbers was made by the band and played over KSMN, Mason City. Much time was spent working on selections for large and small group contests. Several small groups and solo- ists entertained at civic and school activities. A successful season was ended by a spring concert. The BHS marching band, under the direction of Mr. John Duncan, was composed of fifty-three members. The band and twirlers provided entertainment for spectators be- tween halves of football games, parades and other activities. The sixty voice Mixed Choir, directed by Mr. Ivan Kortkamp, began daily practices so as soon as try outs and selections for the group were made in early September. The first public appearance was the Christmas Concert in December. Most of the numbers were religious. Selections from the same concert were presented for the annual student body Christmas assembly. After Christmas vacation work was begun immediately on new pieces for the Spring Concert and contest. In January members of the Choir journeyed to Ames for the performance of the Roger Wagner Chorale. Small groups entertained for various school and outside activities and worked on contest numbers. The Girls' Glee Club was composed of the girls ofthe Mixed Choir. The Boy's Cvlee Club was made up of the members of the male voice section of the Choir. U Iwi TIE? xw 2 N X In Memoriam This page is dedicated to Annette Swenson, a graduate of Belmond Community High School. .Annette was a conscientious music editor of the 1956 annual staff. She contributed a great deal to school life by participating in many activities. Annette was a popular young lady who earned the respect of not only her school but her community as Well. PT Q V-n am.. . Co- Curricular Activities The sponsor for this year's Student Council was Mr. Buck, our principal. Under the direc- tion of Dave Long, our president, the Council sponsored the Homecoming Dance and Festivities.A new and unusual feature of this year's Homecoming was the sale of white mums with purple bows, to represent our school colors. Other activities with Council backing were the Christmas program and the March ofDimes Drive. Meeting once a week the Council discussed various problems which arose in the daily routine of school life. This year, as in the past, a yearbook was presented to the Belmond High School. It was composed of pictures of the high school activities of the past year. Some of these are the sports, clubs, and music groups. The staff consisted of seniors and their junior assistants. Each were assignedto a division and did the layout and copy for that section. This year's Annual was larger and improved over the Annuals of previous years, thanks to the hard -work of the staff and the expert advice of our advisors. This year, as in the past, Mr. Bruner was the chief advisor with the apt aid of Mrs. Duncan and Mr. Eiffler. An honorary society of B. H. S. is Quill and Scroll. To be a member of this organization you must be in the upper third of your class and be outstanding in the field of journalism. This past year's president was Shirley Pals and vice-president was Bill Murray. New members were initiated at a banquet held at the Pine Room of Jones Cafe. One very important part of our school is the school paper, Hoofbeats. Hoofbeats was re- leased from the press every second Friday. Mary Alice Studebaker was the Editor-in-Chief and the Associate Editors were Joan Kriens, Shirley Pals, and Bill Murray. Theseipeople and many, 'nany others put in long hours of hard work. The Future Homemakers of America, has proved by its contributions to be one of the out- standing clubs in school. A few of the club's activities included an Autumn Feast and Sweet- heart Swirl. The FHA president, Karon Bohning, put a degree system into effect this year and in this way the girls earned their trips to Veisha. This club gained recognition by providing a State Vice-President and District President, Mary Alice Studebaker and Linda Bonte, respec-. tively. Belmond High School has a chapter of the Future Farmers of America, which is a national association. The FFA boys are received into the club with a formal initiation. A major branch of the club is its parliamentary procedure team. Members of this club give a banquet each spring in honor of their fathers. The Boys' Athletic Association of Belmond High is B-Club. T o qualify e a ch me mbe r must have earned a major letter. Many of the members received recognition for having earned more than one. The name Girl's Recreation Association, formerly the Girl's Athletic Association, was changed because the organization is solely for purposes of recreation, rather than developing athletics. The sports in which the girls participate included basketball, bowling, and volley- ball, During the Christmas holidays they went caroling and afterwards returned to the school for refreshments and games. A good definition for Pep Club would be the girls in purple and white. These girls attend the games and cheer the boys on to victory. To raise money they sold pencils with the basket- ball schedules printed on them. Eleven students participated in the local speech contest. Eight ofwhom went to Preliminary Contest at Dows. At Dows three girls received Division I ratings. They were Kathy Dorr, Mary Alice Studebaker, and Joan Kriens, These girls also received I's at District and went to State at Denison. r,,.,..-.Nu 6 gd Student Council Front row, left to right: Donna Barkcnin, Sharon Eidc, Junior Negrete, Dave Long, Shirley Pals, and Mr. Buck.
