Although the prospects for this season looked dark after having lost three letter-men by gradua- tion, the season turned out to be the bes-t in the annals of Bronco history. The Broncos had speed, keen ball handling, scrap and aggressiveness to make up for their deficit in over-all height. Advantages of the team were their speed that wore their opponents down and their ability to come through for the Purple and White when the chips were down. After making a good showing at the Forest City Jamboree, the team proceeded to go on to a per- fect season With the exception of one game. The one defeat came at the hands of Manning, a south- western Iowa powerhouse, after a tight, thrilling fourth quarter. With a fourteen point deficit going into the fourth quarter, the team outscored the Manning Bulldogs seventeen points to three, but barely lost by three points. The Broncos ran off with the North Iowa Loop title with a perfect slate of 12 wins, no loses. Belmond proceeded through the sectional games without too much trouble knocking out Dows and Clarion. In the district the Broncs beat the Iowa Falls Cadets with speed and keen ball playing wearing the Cadets down. In the finals of the district the team rolled over Franklin Consolidated. In their first ap- pearance at sub-state, the Broncos broke upafourth quarter by Forest City and then put the Indians out of contention 52-46. In the final game of the sub-state round, Coach Crimmings' boys played the Carroll Tigers. The Broncos were nosed out of the sweet sixteen in the state tournament by three points, 57-60. Thus the Belmond Broncos wound up their best season for all time. The outlook for next year looks excellent with the reserves being more developed and some good boys coming up. The Broncos virtually landed the whole team on the All-Con- ference selections. Don Hoppel and Ken Loats were on the first team, Keith Madsen onthe second, and Ron Hansen, Larry Lar- son, and LeRoy Smith were given honorable mention. Ken Loats won a place on the Iowa Daily PressAssociation all-state fourth team. Ken received probably the highesthonor any player has received in Bronco cage history. f F 3-i'i.....m'a5?f'V Basketball Scores Opponents Hampton Z9 Eagle Grove 44 Northwood 29 Buffalo Center Forest City Garner Lake Mills Glidden Manning Britt Northwood Hampton Buffalo Center Clarion Sheffield Forest City Garner Lake Mills Britt Sectional Dows Clarion District Iowa Falls Franklin Cons Sub-State Forest City Carroll 4l 30 39 44 We Opponents 37 35 Hampton 37 51 Z5 Eagle Grove 40 54 2.4 Northwood ZZ 42 Z9 Buffalo Center 17 35 40 Forest City 31 48 50 Garner Z3 46 Z9 Lake Mills Z8 35 48 Britt 35 51 37 Northwood 2.3 51 36 Hampton 43 49 32 Buffalo Center 34 42 47 Clarion Z8 49 Sheffield 30 39 49 Forest City 35 56 49 Garner 36 37 Lake Mills Z9 55 40 Britt 31 . 42 46 l 60 l 1 Bottom Row KL to Rl - Dale Caquelin, Roger Smith, Gary Meyer, Gary Ers land, Bruce Hall, Arlo Wayne Stoltenberg. Though the first game was dropped the Broncos showed promise against Hampton both offensively and defensively. The only victory for the Purple and White came at Northwood where the team defeated the Vikings Z3-0. Coach Crimmings' boys' best night came when cross county rivals Clarion play- ed on the local gridiron. Clarion was sporting one of their better teams in recent years. Belmond relied almost ntirely on passing which severely jammed up the Cowboy defense. Belmond hel the Cowboys to 6-0 the first half. Clarion came back to score two touchdowns and add the extra points. The Broncos were outscored but not outfought. ff On the All-North Iowa Conference selections, flashy quarterback Keith Madsen pulled down a first team berth, Dwight Beavers was second team center and LeRoy Smith, Phil Schmitz, and Kyle Mennenga received honorable mention. With seventeen letter-men returning next year Belmond should have one of the top contenders for the North Iowa conference Loop title. -if 1 W 155 HC?-Wm' mf FHA GROUP 2 First Row Karen M'eints Mary Thompson Colleen White, Maryellen Johnson, Phyllis Lee, Betty Eetlc s Sindra Simerson Patsy Tracy Donna Lee, Cora White.
