SEASONS SUMMARY Sickness plagued the Broncos throughout the entire cage season. On several occasions members of the squad vt-rc absent or not up to par due to illness. After an unimpressive showing at the Conference .laitto ree and a clinic held at Eagle Grove, the Broncos rolled to 5 straight wins, Then the axe fell and three nip and tuck battles were dropped to Lake Mills, Garner, and Forest City respectively. The only other game the Belmond cagers lost in conference play was the return match with Forest City, The 8 won and 4 lost record compiled by the Broncos in conference tilts entitled them to third place in the North Iowa Conference. Belmond went on to win the rubber game with Gar- ner. 50-36, thus capturing the Sectional Tournament title. The Broncos downed Radcliffe 57 to 34 for their first win in district competition at Webster City. Smooth ball-han- dling Corpus Christi of Fort Dadge smashed the Broncos hopes of further play by defeating the Broncos by a score of 66 to 50. The Corpus Christi Celts moved on to the State Tournament and other honors. Perhaps the outstanding strength of the Broncos was their accuracy from the free throw line. The six first- stringers hit 74 per cent of their charity tosses. The second feature of the team's season was its fairly strong defense. The Broncos held their opponents to an average of 41 points per tilt while out-scoring their adversaries with an average of 50 points. As the North Iowa Conference seemed unusually strong this year. three conference teams were chosen in- stead of the regular two . Dave Helland, the team's lead- ing scorer with 230 points. and Al Madsen were selected to the All-Conference first team. Vernon Meyer placed on the third team and Ken Loats was mentioned honorably. Next season the Broncos should be strong contenders in the North Iowa Conference as three 'fre-gulars will be again working together and the boys should be more ac- customed to Coach Crimmings' style of play.
