They were eager to begin their school days and ready to be taught. These fifteen people were: Jack Riggs, Marilyn Ellis, Paul Griesy, Bill Trees, Leila Springer, Isabel Negrete, Marion Meints, Dwight Whelan, Aileen Kalkwarf, Patty Engle, Vernadean Berns, Helen Gabrielson, Bradley Jenison, Norma Jean Hopkey, and Carol Seiberts. Our Kindergarten teacher was Miss Patterson. 1 We had quite an exciting year, we built a playhouse and one time played Polly, Put the Kettle On for our mothers. Ah, those were the days! Each day we took naps on little rugs on the floor. In first grade, Miss Blake was our teacher. Rose Mary Bleeker and Paul Lynch joined us here. Norma Jean Hopkey had a picnic at her house, one day and gave us all cookies. It was also in this year that Bill Trees had to sit in the hall one day because he got a little noisy with his scissors. Second grade brought us four newcomers. They were: Dixie Carstens, Stan- ley Eccles, Raymond Lowenberg, and Faye Withers. Miss Studebaker was our teacher that year, and it was also the year that Aileen had to sit in the coat room one day for being a bad little girl. Miss Van Hauen was our third grade teacher. It was here that we learned how to make cottage cheese and butter. Patty Engle left us in this grade and John Quigley joined us. Fourth grade found us with Mrs. Parker as our teacher. Don Grillo came that year and Carol Sciberts left. A scrap-iron drive was held in school that year and our class might have won if we hadn't gone down to John Quigley's house to play. By the time we reached fifth grade, you can see that we had already learned a lot. In fact, our teacher, Miss Brynes, allowed us to have a war stamp booth and we all had stamp books and bought stamps every day. Don Faris, Clelen Redmond, and Myron Trager joined us that year and John Quigley left. In sixth grade we held a great election. Some of the boys tried to get everyone to vote for Franklin Roosevelt. They finally persuaded all the boys except Paul Griesy. Miss Devine was our teacher that year. We had three new students. They were: Dick Elliott, Bob Erdman, and Doris Mourlam. Don Faris left at the end of sixth grade. , Initiation into Junior High is something we'l1 'always remember. Miss Casey and Miss Darrah were our seventh grade teachers and Dick Simpson and Eleanor Riekens joined us. It was in seventh grade that we had a canned food race with eighth grade. We were last so we had to give them a party. Paul Griesy left at the end of the year. In eighth grade we still had Miss Casey and Miss Darrah as teachers. Much of our time in eighth grade was spent at the Youth Center which was open for Junior High every Thursday night. Our graduation play was called Elmer and starred Myron Trager. The dog that was in the play got loose and ate our meat balls we had for the play. Rose Bleeker left that year. Our Freshman year was about the most exciting year we've had. Fifteen people joined us. They were: Lila Jean Johnson, Beverly Lerdal, JoAnn Slining, Mar Ellen McClure, Beverly Pals, Darlene Thompson, Marlys Watermiller, Mar- lyn matermiller, Don Faris, Louis Oberhauser, Robert Toft, Evanette Pals, Melvin Anderson, Paul Griesy and Deloris Green. This was a year filled with fun and excitement. Initiation started the year and a picnic at Lake Cornelia brought it to a close. It was at this picnic that Jack and Don and a couple of others had a lot of fun in a row boat. Raymond Lowenberg, Melvin Anderson, Lelia Springer and Faye Withers left us that year. By the time we had become Sophomores, we had become a little more settled. However we had another picnic, only this time we went to Clear Lake. We also served at the Junior-Senior banquet that year. Mildred Smith joined us and Ver- dell Wagner, Gary Harty, and Evanette Pals left us. Doris Kickbush, Connie Sjoberg, Rose Bleeker, Roy Hardwick, and Duane Nelson joined us our Junior year. That year we had three queens from our class. Marlys Watermiller was basketball queen, Vernadean Berns was homecoming queen, and Doris Kickbush was Miss Belmond at the band festival. This was the year we put on the Junior-Senior banquet using a Dutch theme. Our class play was Curse of the Incas . Connie Sjoberg and Marion Meints left at the end of this year. In the fall of 1950 we started our final year at B. H. S. This has been an eventful year for us. The thrill of receiving our class rings, attending Veishea, commencement, and baccalaureate will never be forgotten. The trip to Eldora to have our pictures taken was one of our most unforgettable experiences. . We took airplane rides, crossed on swinging bridges, went to a museum, had picnics, and went to a show. We also had our share of queens our senior year. Aileen Kalkwarf was Band Queen at Garner, Marlys Watermiller was basketball queen, and Bev Pals was May Queen. V- --'- ,f .- Norma Stearns, Mildred Smith, and Rose -Bleeker left during theyear. I Graduation means an end to schooling for some of our seniors, but-for others it is only the beginning. These past years have made us many friends and brought us many new experiences. Now, we must say goodbye to our ,teachers and classmates and we hope that you will have just as much fun during your school life as we have had. 4 . V .
