'CB ax -:S X w :- si THAT WAS THEN lf someone had visited Bells High School last year, they would have agreed that a big change was ln order. After a lot of hard work, the change finally came. Our community is very proud of the fact that we have built a brand new 1.75 million dollar high school. This great accomplishment could not have ever materialized without the whole communi- ty pulling together. lt all started with the second attempt at passing a 1.2 million dollar bond election. lt passed in the fall of 1986. The plans had already been drawn up by the architects of EDI. Next a contractor was chosen. The decision was made to use Paul Pogue as the contractor. Finally, the construction began. All of the work that went into getting the high school built and ready for the first day of school in 1987 wasn't totally done by the contractors. There were coaches and teachers as well as community people who took time out to help a little. It was really hard to keep the construction right on schedule at times because of the rain. This was definitely a down-to-the-deadline project. The building we now have and the pride Bells now has was worth every minute of hard work and every tax dollar. f A t A s W 'ii f -- - K i .I I 1,34 L -' ' - 1I':' -- t Q - ' .. - Y .se sw' eoss fsig ,..,.., S.. if sssw vi ' ....,. i Q gg, - ' --ff K M i . 3, . , N W uxmwmwn' -4 eee -'H CQ ., -Q :ie ' 4 . 5'7 2 if jaw I H f 'N I W ,... ,. 1 . -Q-ef 1 3 1 ' geeks, '-iewwwhuq , ef- ' 3 W ifesu, ft., meg. .. ...W 2 fl :MQW fr J ., .EN- , . km .g, N www ' V -is 81 a., .Q . As all people know a student's life can be extremely complicated. First, they must come to school and wade through seven classes a day. This almost always seems to leave a big pile of homework that must be done. In addition, most students also have other school activities in which they participate that require after school practices. On top of that, there are some students who have after school jobs. By the time a student completes his family chores and goes to church, he is totally frazzled. How in the world does a student stay alive these days? To get through seven classes a day many daydream, sleep, or actually pay attention. They work frantically to get five worksheets filled out so that they will not be waiting after basketball practice. Many students think about the weekend and all the wonderful plans which have been made. They pass a little note to their friend to see if their plans match or to see if they have any candy or gum. When all else fails, students ask for a pass so that they can change the scenery lvisit the restrooml. Every student has hisfher way of coping, but somehow they all survive. For most students the day is just beginning when the final bell rings. They rush off to basketball or football practice or to a meeting for a club to which they belong. A great number head off to work to earn that wonderful minimum wage that helps to meet all the monstrous expenses in a student's life. Of course, after they've run that last sprint or checked out that last customer, they realize it is their turn to do the dishes. By the time the dishes are done, the night is still young, it's only nine o'clock. Then they walk into their room and see that mountain of books staring them in the face. So they reluctantly begin to get into the grind of studying, answering questions, and writing papers. Finally, the day is over and the work is done. They look around and suddenly realize they forgot a work sheet left in their locker. They decide not to worry about it to much because they are too tired to do it even if it were at home. They send up a quick thank-you to God for getting them through another day and drift off to sleep. This is the life of a student. .faq .Z 'X 7 Every year students at Bells High School look forward to the advent of Loy Lake Stock Show with great anticapation and much excitement. The question is, Who did these esteemed ladies dance with? The girls, of course. Not all of the girls danced. One particular blonde senior of '88 waited patiently in the restroom as the events progressed. Others were busy tending to or fighting with their dates. Nevertheless, the 1987 Junior-Senior Prom was a definite show of the bonds formed through the years between the Juniors and the Seniors. Now the seniors of '87 have gone on their separate ways. Even though there was the familiar excitement as in years past and the anticipation of who would be Homecom- ing Queen, this was the first Homecoming on a brand new field. For the first time, the Homecoming Queen was not escorted by a Senior football player. Traditionally, Queen candidates were escorted by a Senior who played on the football team. However, Lynn Felmet, a Senior basketball player, proudly escorted Miss Regina Thomas, the 1987 Homecoming Queen. Accompanying Re- gina and Lynn was Queen candidate Jodi Higgins. Other candidates included Lauren Young and Melanie Peevey es- corted by Brian Hamilton, Shelly Vick and Shanna Rolen escorted by Mark Garner, Robin Metcalf and Mandy Holland escorted by Chad Way, Brandi Mays and Sandi Winchester escorted by Robert Miller, and Lisa Corbin and Jennifer Bateman escorted by Richie Harris. Varsity Pep Rallies 27 In the tomb-like quietness of Bells High School hallways, an alarm- ing ringing sound disturbs everything that lives. Soon the halls be- come alive with movement and chatter. Each living creature seems to have one stopping place .... THE LOCKER. This place allows each student to get materials for the coming class, to catch up on the latest news, or to get rid of some frustration by slamming or hitting something because of that failing test grade. Whatever the reason, lockers are always a part of our everyday life at school. Our personalities are reflected in the lockers fdreams, securities, and futuresj. Dreams about that special person of whom we have a picture some- times occur, other times, security is needed, just to get through the long school day. These are the days when it is a relief to have a mirror hanging on our locker. We are sure to check to see if every last hair is in it's perfect place, or if a wart has grown on our nose since last hour. What about the adventurous side of us? lt's present too! At times, the adventure is just being able to open the locker door. Other adven- turous signs of our future are represented sometimes by just having a picture representing a profession that we would like to pursue. ln years past, lockers contained posters, mirrors, and sometimes trays to hold our junk. Some students even went as far as to leave notes to one another in between classes. Cookies and chips were always a favorite as long as we didn't get caught. Once in a while we would overcome fear and bring a soft drink. But, of course, THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW. Now the lockers lack mirrors, and posters are few. We are even too busy to leave the notes anymore. We would not dare be caught with food much less a softdrink, for the fear of the wrath of Mr. Coulter. Despite all of this, we found some interesting lockers. Can you pick out which locker belongs to whom? We are proud to be th very first Seniors at the new Bells High School. We Seniors feel privileged to be initiatin new traditions to be followed in the future. l'm glad the school was finished in time for our Senior year, said Robert Colwell. I would have been fun to be the last graduating class from the old school, but this is a gre: way to end our high school careers. We are proud to be a part of this wonderful change, a change that was desperatel needed. lt's great to be able to walk down the halls without it being crowded, said Gre Sanford. He also brought out another important fact. The kids graduating from th middle school are really lucky. They will be looking forward to going to a new hig school. The seniors still believe in the old traditions no matter how much things have change: During assemblies we still sit on the right hand side in the very front. That's our place Seniors have always been seated in this honored position. Next year that sacred spot wi be filled by the upcoming Seniors. We've waited for many precious years to sit there an have the many privileges that Seniors have. Our greatest privilege that we were given is th right to get an education. Now we are getting our reward for hanging in there. We owe tha privilege to many people. We would like to thank our community for their understandin and support throughout the years. Thank you for everything you have done for us, bu most of all, thank you for making it possible for us to graduate from a brand new hig school. Robin Michelle Barcheers Lf 1. They share the same feel- ings as everyone in our schoolg they love it. They love the space, the newness, and even the cafete- ria food. Stephanie Shaffer said, lt's bigger, the halls are less crowd- ed, and the lunchroom food is a lot better. Some of the Juniors feel that the new school has im- proved the atmosphere for learn- ing. They feel that it has in- creased their educational oppor- tunities. Some even feel it has af- fected the temperament of the people. lt's a lot nicer, and the people act a lot better. l also think the classes are harder, stated Tau- sha Bellah. Of course, the looks of our new school are important to a lot of people. Our Juniors like the way our school looks, its style, and the modern flair. lt's more colorful, and it has a lot better facilities, said Kim Do- phied. To sum it all up, the Juniors feel that this year has been the best year yet, and the new school is the main reason they feel this way. They are proud to be stu- dents at the new Bells High School. They are more challenged and say the new school has affected their at- titude toward education. They have a better outlook and are try- ing harder to make the most of their time at Bells High School. The new school has improved everyone's attitude and im- proved student morale, said Bri- an Blackmon. Some sophomores think they are getting more personal atten- tion. Others are glad they aren't so cramped and everyone is get- ting along a lot better. Our sopo- mores do not mind having closed campus. They love the cafeteria food - there's more variety this year and more of what everyones likes to eat. Our sophomores are glad not to be freshmen because there's not so much pressure on them from upperclassmen. They are accepted as part of the Bells High gang, so they feel better. They've been freshman and are mingling well in high school life. Just like everyone here at Bells High School, sophomores are glad to be here and very happy about the new school. Last year the Freshmen at least had the 7th and 8th graders under them. This year they were at the very bottom of the totem pole. Well, just how does lt feel to be I Freshman at the new Bells Hlgh School? We asked our freshmen and these guys gave us some pretty strong answers. Kiley King also played the part of the Boy when the play was performed in Bells at the P.T.0. meeting. The play took place in the late seventeenth century in a prison cell just after midnight . The six characters were awaiting the dawn which might bring them all death by hanging. They each had been sentenced for witchcraft, but only the Calm Woman remained un- moved. When questioned by the others, she replied that she would not die on the gallows - that the devil takes care of his own. Soon the others believed that she was a witch and begged her to tell them how they too might gain Satan's protection, but the Girl protested ever- ything they did. Her protests aroused them to fury, and they killed her. The Calm Woman then told them that she hasn't offered them any guarantee of saftey. In an even wilder fury, they killed her also, only to realize that they had fulfilled her prophecy - - she would not die on the gallows. . f ,, 1, r 2 2 l 1 ,,ei III' 1 I 5:1 -iii ss me N: Xxx! 9-535-' mm-0 o O-'02 E375 no g ' 'tg'-0 is! ...,o :EB Begg cu 53? -152 Rang .'.L :Zu vo: aura' om' :rn-2' -'Ei g'-9 Q :ma 'S Elo : 30423 ,gsm I xv is KKKKXXXXXN Ky' pl e f N t ,Q f, , ,5' 4 4 gd' Y I linux! Junior Roy Thomas made the semester honor roll. The semester honor roll is made up of people who have worked hard and conducted themselves in a man- nerly way in the classroom. These people have kept a 90 or above aver- age every six-weeks. Some of the higher achievers made the superin- tendent's honor roll. They made 90 or above in every class. There were eighteen students who fulfilled the requirements for making it to the se- mester honor roll list. We are very proud of each one and support them in their continued efforts. Along with this standing comes a lot of honor, responsibility, and a chance to at- tend some very special activities and become members of academic clubs. Having a 90 or above average allows a Bells High School student the privi- lege of becoming a Beta member. This year these students were invited to attend an A team breakfast held at Holiday lnn. Organizations 81 PM It A was V V ' MMM , I1 to lau- ghed, S , Have you ever wondered about what It takes to make an extraordinary yearbook? The answer to your question is the a wllllng-to- work yearbook staff, a lot of hard work, and many long hours. Our yearbook staff started work ln the summer of 1987, at the Josten's Yearbook workshop at Texas Women's Unlverslty ln Denton, Texas. For three days co-editors Michelle Lazenby and Lisa Wagner and other staff members Robert Colwell, Melanle Jones, Tammy Lake, Jeana Taylor, Greg Sanford, and Shelly Vick attended meetings on preparing the yearbook. When the workshop ended, a great deal of the preparatory plannlng was done. The staff members are not only extraordlnary but also adventurous. In order to save money in the future, they started developing their own film and prlntlng the plctures. The darkroom? . . . Well, it started out in a bathroom in the teachers' lounge. Slnce this room was too small, staff members used the Science Lab with the consent of Mr. Bankston. Staff members gave up free Saturday mornings and tlme after school In the afternoons in order to develop fllm and process plctures. This was not as easy as it sounds. Chemicals had to be mixed and then labeled. Afterwards, staff members would wear this smell for the rest of the day. Some negatives had to be prlnted over and over to get just the right effect. Developing fllm was soon mastered by Robert Colwell, Jodi Hlgglns and Tammy Lake, but not before Steve Ross and Brian Hamllton gave it their best shot. They now know the difference between chemicals for developing film and prlntlng pictures although they dldn't at the tlme. Lisa Wagner and Denlse Larklns teamed up to print plctures. After a lot of trial and error, printing pictures became an almost every day occurrence. These two were joined ln the venture of prlntlng by Tracy Hall, Jodi Higgins, and Tammy Lake. Could any of these ladies make a career of this new found skill? Deadline is the true meaning of Blood, Sweat, and Tears . To make a deadline complete, thirty-four pages had to be finished. Staff members were behind a couple of tlmes, but Mrs. Jones always knew how to pull us through. Soon everything began falllng into place, and the dream of the perfect yearbook became a reallty. While some staff members developed fllm and prlnted pictures, others worked on page design, copy for spreads, and plcture captions. Mlchelle Lazenby was always on hand to answer questions, help with assignments and problems, proofread pages, and provided a gread deal of creative thlnklng. Staff members Brandi Mays, Greg Sanford, Melanie Jones, and Shelly Vlck could be counted on to complete page deslgn, enter material lnto the computer, schedule pictures, and many of the other endless detalls involved in yearbook production. There are many things that go on to make a perfect yearbook, and thls year, through team effort, we think it happened. Wlth each staff member finding out what he or she dld best, each was assigned different jobs. Later the work was comblned not to make a picture book, but a yearbook that Informs, records, and shows a great year at Bells. M . If f , 6 . K fs H..-if M N . I J ifqwia fi ng 7 ,,,. Asking of what is ahead And looking at the past We realize so much now. This door separates us And leads up To new lives. We'll always have the past, But a new and brighter future now shows. We've gathered our knowledge And now we step out alone Knowing that once we step through this door There is no turning back. The challenges we face are many. The courage is strong and true. We still have a lot to learn, But we know in life we will succeed! Yes, here we stand The Seniors of 1988. Facing uncertain doors. But we open each one Learning a little more And knowing somewhere out there There are the others with doors of their own. 129 Y :3,:5gy:i:21E?-1' -. ..-.-..-..-L-115. . Of course, there was still a lot of work that had not been completed, but the building was usable. Students and construction workers were still mingling with each other even after a few weeks of school. The gym and football field were the last things to be completed. There are some people who really stand out as people who helped to make everything possible. The people of our community contributed with their yes votes on the passing of the bond package and their continued support with taxes. Superintendent Ron Rowell should be commended for his unfailing hard work and dedication in the passage of the bond and construction work. Former board members as well as current board members contributed innumerable hours of their time to this project. These members included Gloria Roberts, Robert Pointer, Paul Smith, David Sears, Carolyn Dexheimer, Van Britt, and Chester Reynolds in 1986-87. Newly elected members for 1987-88 were Cynthia Young, Ronnie Brown, and Randy Waldrip. Many teachers and community members donated their time and worked on the construction of our school. On September 19, 1987 the new Bells High School building was dedicated. At 11:00 A.M. the cornerstone ceremony was conducted by the Bells Masonic Lodge. The new school, located on Ambrose road, includes 13 classrooms, a cafetorium, gymnasium, library, kitchen, and office area in the main building. Then there is also a vocational agriculture shop with classroom directly east the main building as well as an ag project center a quarter of a mile north of the building. Behind the ag shop and classroom is the athletic field house and concession stand. Jw,.,.,f-f ...ff f N ' un.: K ., x rr 1 r W ':f5:'g 5 , . 1 l U 'N-I 5' i gk ' ,-I h . Q' .
