Cause there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them. I've been around enough to know that you're the one I want to go through time with. If I had a box just for wishes And words that had never come true, The box would be empty, except for the memory of how they were answered by you. And there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them. I’ve been around enough to know that you're the one I want to go through time with. - Jim Croce Of all the virtues a person may possess, one of the greatest is devotion to duty. This quality, among others, distinguishes Mrs. Louise Pearson, to whom we dedi- cate the 1977 EAGLE. Through the years Mrs. Pearson has skillfully performed the duties of teacher, librarian, and advisor. We, the students and faculty, have benefitted much from the influence of Mrs. Pearson. Her long service has been characterized by the loy- alty to her students and the institution to which she has bound herself. Therefore, we, the EAGLE staff, in appreciation of her devotion, affectionately dedicate the EAGLE to our teacher and friend Mrs. Louise Pearson. However, Bells High School students are not only having fun but picking up state and national awards as well for their school newspaper. THE STAFF of The Eyrie en- joys putting out a newspaper and “learning how to do the whole thing,” said Georgia Grace Elizer. librarian and newspaper adviser at this small Crockett County school. Mrs. Elizer stressed that students here are rather newspaper-minded and pointed out that participation is strictly voluntary. The students already were pub- lishing a newspaper when Mrs. Elizer — called Miss E by her young charges — arrived to take over the library eight years ago. The students found out that I was newspaper adviser for Haywood County High School and they asked me if I would help them with it. I told them if they planned to improve the paper, I would The school newspaper was known as The Waste Basket then Why the name? “Because that's where it belonged, quipped Eyrie staffer Becky Williams, 17. Mrs. Elizer said the first step toward improving the newspaper was renaming it. Since the eagle is the school mascot, “eyrie” — a var- iation of aerie (an eagle s nest) — appeared appropriate, she pointed out. “AND SINCE aeries are found at great heights, it also was symbolic of top of the week j the student's idea that they wanted to do better. She adopted a week-long annual workshop to acquaint students with journalism before they began work on The Eyrie's seven issues a year. Three years ago, the workshop was replaced with an experimental journalism class which each student must take before joining the Eyrie staff. Mrs. Elizer, who teaches the course, said special permission was required from the state Department of Education to begin the journalism course. The class is unusual, she explained, because the students are involved in independent study as well as bookwork. Qnly sophomores, juniors and seniors work on the staff, she point- ed out, adding that the students usually concentrate a week’s work on each issue before sending off page dummies to an Indiana, Pa., printing firm. The school does not have its own printing press but the staff does the newspaper layout, headline-writing and photography. The students also sell ads to offset printing costs. The Eyrie’s circulation is about 175. The yearly subscription fee recently was raised to $2 to combat inflation. MRS. ELIZER said the Eyrie has 30 staff members, about 20 per cent of the BHS student body. Staffers are assigned to various jobs, includ- ing persons who are responsible for certain pages. ing a good job. The newspaper has won the top awards for high school journalism in the Columbia Scholas- tic Press Association and the Na- tional Scholastic Press Association. Last year the Eyrie received an “All-Tennessee designation and the highest rating in state competition from the Tennessee High School Press Association. Becky Williams is quick to reveal the newspaper's secret of success. “We have to give ‘Miss E’ the credit. She has a very vivid imagination and comes up with a lot of story ideas that we never would think of.” Other staffers voiced agreement. Mrs. Elizer, who appeared embar- rassed by the praise, said the new- spaper is “something the students can get some satisfaction from. Some schools have excellent football and band programs. Small schools Eyrie staffers apparently are do- In order to improve their journalistic skills, staffers attended two workshops - one sponsored by the Tennessee High School Press Assn, at Henry County High School and another spon- sored by The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. SOME OF Bells High School’s graduate staffers have gone on to work at college newspapers. Some staffers have earned in- dividual honors for skills in feature writing and photo- graphy while in high school. Sheryl Searcy, 17, said working on the school new- spaper has interested her in a journalistic venture after graduation. She stressed that she was not Ihinking of going into a journalism career, however. “It might be something I would do on the side. Two staffers, Camille Kee and Grace Elizer, daughter of Mrs. Elizer. serve as the school’s corre- spondents to The Jackson Sun. Mrs. Elizer said another benefit is the students’ in- terest in independent study. The school has sent delegates to the Tennessee High Schoot Press Associa- tion convention. And we have to get a bus to take everybody to a journelism clinic spon- sored annually by a Mem- phis newspaper. If I could make days last forever, If words could make wishes come true, I'd save every day like a treasure and then - Again I would spend them with you. Cause there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them. I've been around enough to know that you're the one I want to go through time with. If I had a box just for wishes And words that had never come tme, The box would be empty, except for the memory of how they were answered by you. And there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them. I've been around enough to know that you’re the one I want to go through time with.
