SAULS FOREWORD 10 This is Bells High Where each year there are gathered over three hundred students from Smoaks, Ruffin, Ehrd hardt, Lodge, and Islandton. Each, bringing his own tastes , reaches for academic study, sports, social life or just companionship. This, too, is Bells H the thrill of winning a ball game, the excitement of homecoming, the election of officers for various classes, Junior-Senior prom, beauty contests, boy friends, girl friends, participation in many activities, dread of examinations and. sometimes report cards, but awaiting the thrill of graduation. Most of us are closely associated with Bells for only four years -- some a shorter time -- but each one becomes a part of her and her impression is left on the students. These pages are the record of one year inthe life of Bells High School. HIGHTOWER French and Librarian English and French In our English department students are encouraged to learn correct grammar, to enlarge their vocabularies, to appreciate the writings of others, to spell correctly, and to try creative writing of their own. By offering four years of English with all thatitincludes, we hope to have enough op- portunities for each student to learn better communication and to get an understanding of the language we speak. Soit is an imperfect form of the verb to be -- n'est pasW' asks Mrs. Hightower. French, the only foreign language taught at Bells, is a part of the col- lege preparatory curriculum. This year, only first-year French is of- iered, but first-year and second- year will be available next year. Listen to Peter Ustinov read from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, says Mrs. Paters. Social Studies It is often said that history repeats itself. The social studies department reveals the past to help students un- derstand the present and prepare for the future. There are three phases of this department -- United States history, World history, and Amercian government. All of theme give the student appreciation of our heritage, knowledge of our governmental prin- ciples, and interests in current events.
