Our school history is divided into three periods: Ancient, Medieval and Modern. The ancient days started back in 1924, when we were under the authority of Miss Staley for two years. There are only five members of the present senior class who were among the fifteen who started together. In the third grade we were fortunate to have Miss Heekleman. In the fourth grade we changed teachers again. It seemed as if the teachers didn't like us. Miss Furniss was our instructor that year. The year of 1928 was the beginning of the medieval period. Miss Monson tolerated us for two years. In the seventh grade our teacher was Miss Staley a sister of our first and second grade teacher, and in the eighth grade, Miss Thompson. The modern history began when we were green freshmen. There were eleven of us who entered this period. Nothing very eventful happened to us as freshman except that we were initiated by the Sophomores. In the Sophomore year we had the privilege of initiating the Freshmen. As sophomores we made more progress for we realized that there was a group lower than we. Our Junior year, being a rather big year, kept us busy. We gave the community a large Hallowcfen party and dance. Our class play, NThe Importance of Being Earnest,H was huge success and we made enough to give the Seniors a very lovely banquet at Old Chase Tavern, in Worthington. By this time our class had decreased to seven. Maybe we were small but we were nighty. At last our school days are about to end. We now have a class of eight. The Juniors gave us a banquet, April 17, in the Junior Rose Room at the Hotel Virginia in Columbus. This was followed by a dance at the Cavalier Room. The Seniors worked very hard on an annual this year, an annual production which was begun by the Seniors of last year. Our play, URoom for Tenn, and our commencement activities have kept us very busy. The old tradition of getting school rings was adhered to. As a class of eight we feel that we have accomplished much, and now we are entering into the world looking forward to something bigger and better than our school days. -19- .1 -212. .X, ie sl- .. .- ,, ? ilje' 3, :Q 1 J. 1. lv. 5: ,1,. 1 if X 1: x , A ' if ggw'.g5a.,5 -' . August 2. A. D. Kilbury LAJ OFFICE New York ' New York A gust 1, 1250 - Today I was forced to set out on my trip to my old playq grounds at Bellpcint, Ohio. As I entered white Sulphur my X train was met by a large crowd. I didn't recognize any faces. I was later informed that this was the first trip of the Wwhite Sulphur Zephyr,N the first of the stream lined trains to run on this railroad. Ag I was getting ready to take a taxi to Bellpoint of which White Suplhur is a suburb, I ran into Betty Rodgers, my old high school sweetheart. She is still unmarried lives in White Sulphur and goes to Bellpoint every day to teach at East High. After leaving this old friend I went to Bellpoint and put up at the Boyd House, reputed to be one of the best hotels in Bellpoint. August 2, ' In the lobby of my hotel I met one of my old pals, Wray Sdbinsf After conversing several minutes, I asked if he was staying here. To my surprise he informed me that he owned the jointF' I-Ie insisted that TE go up and meet Mrs. Sabine and little VAsaW and WFreddie.W On entering I was surprised at meeting one of my old classmates, Darlene Dunlap. Mrs. Sabine, it seems after leaving Bellpoint became a famous dietician. Later while working in the 'Boyd Housen, Cupid shot that fatal, final shaft. Our conversation was interrupted several times by little nAsah and WFreddieW trying to Wbreak me of the habith with a bean shooter and a toy cannon. I spent the rest of the day trying to close a business deal. This forencon after leaving the hotel I took the subway to the Soldiers' Home, erected by President Landon for the veterans of the war of 1938. The Home was managed by two for- mer classmates, Doctors G, V. Webster and F.M. Freshwater. After trying for two hours to get in touch with them, I finallg succeeded. I learned that WDocU Webster had made good use of the mustache and Packard and Frances after four unsuccessful ventures into matrimcny is looking for a good husband. On my return I stopped at the home of Alice Easton who lives on Bunty Station Boulevard, the most aristocratic part of town. Alice is new known as hrs. Frye and is the hagpy mother of sic children, I returned to the hotel about P.M. and spent the rest of the dey visiting Mr. and Mrs. Bnbins. Today I crossed the great Bellpoint Dam built on the large Scioto River and went down Moon St. to the Comedie Francaise, the largest opera house in Bellpoint. It is built on the site of my old Alma Mater, the centralized High School of Bellpointfs smaller days. Here I met Madame Thestra Mathoas, known to me as Esther Thomas. After Esther graduated, her rise was very rapid. She first became known as one of Major Bowes famous amateurs and she is now one of the oountry's most famous opera singers. We returned to my temporary office at Maple Grove, on Main Street. Esther is planning to divorce Jackie Cooper, famous star of the talking pictures. She is suing him for 82,000,000 on the grounds of non-support. As her attorney I shall make preparations for winning what promises to be the most sensational law suit of the century. I am planning to go back to New York for a few days study and then return to Bellpoint for the law suit. -21- 1 4 ' 'I .- , ' ' I-U. 5, 2- - -...N v W... 'HV .., ' i,. Ever since its release this fastmoving comedy has been a Wbest sellern. With their father away, Ted and Lucille Scott turn their imposing home into a common public hotel to win a 32,000 wager. They make Walt, the gardener over into a bell-hop, and Stella, the cook, into a maid. The Uhoteln is opened for business and then the fun begins. Guests are plentiful but with them comes trouble in all sorts of ways. The gardener and cook are constantly making mistakes in their new roles which make up many mirthful scenes. A widowed aunt keeps objecting to this enterprise until she becomes interested in some of the men roomers. A government health inspector, an sloping couple, and the bride-to-be's irate Irish mother provide a world of merriment for the audience. In addition to the lunches served the girls of the Glass have made several additions to the equipment of the school. New curtains at windows and doors were purchased, made and hung in the kitchen and girl's dressing room. Curtains around the stage were made by the girls, as were all the group dresses and sunbonnets for the operetta. Several minor pieces of equipment have been added in the Domestic Science Department. Though this has taken much time, they have in addition to constructing several garments for themselves or members of their families, completed units of work on Textiles, Home Decoration, House Management, Child Gare and First Aid. We have enjoyed music very much, singing many new songs and working hard on our operetta Usunbonnet Sue.W It seems as though the members of the Glee Club have taken a greater interest in music this year than in previous years. We have enjoyed several parties given at the school house by the members of the Club. Every member had the opportunity to take an active part in the musical programs and games which were a part of the year's music work. The Club was well represented at the annual Spring Festival which was held at Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan cam March 27. pus: The program consisted of several numbers presented by dif- ferent schools and of several numbers sung by the All-County chorus directed by Mrs. Denton. The three big factors in building childhood are the home, the school and the church. The Parent-Teacher Association is vitally interested in all these institutions. In the Parent- Teacher Association, the first two of these have been brought into close relationship. There is great need for the parent to have knowledge of the methods, the procedures and the problems of the teacher in her attempt to educate the children. On the other hand, the teacher is greatly benefited in her work with the child if she can know and understand the family background and early training. Thus the personal contact which the P.T.A. makes possible gives each, the parent and the teacher, the opportunity to better understand the child and his problems. This contact in recreational as well as educational work, fosters a feeling of good fellowship and cooperation between the parent and the teacher. We have, for several years, had at Bellpoint a prosperous Parent-Teacher Association. This year under the leadership of Mrs. Clark many interesting meetings have been held. At the December meeting of the P,T.A. a Christmas operetta was given by the first six grades. Grades one to four presented WTrouble in Toylandgn grades five and six, UA Penny for Christmas.W At the March meeting of P.T.A. after a short business session UThe Kiddies Vaudevillen entertained us. The program Was in two parts, NThe Toy Maker's Dreamn and UJack in the Box.n The program was arranged by Mrs. Salisbury, Miss Richards and Miss Webster. This year the school library greatly benefited from the P.T.A. Around twenty-five educational and entertaining books by our best classic and modern authors were added to our book shelves. We hope that next year each of the one hundred and seven l935-36 members will bring with him a new member to increase Bellpoint Parent-Teacher Association. .l0lllClQUlUl Vice-president ... .. Our alumni have always given us a spirit of loyalty to their school which we, of the class of 1936 snail strive to uphold and augment. J , Jr., BOY SGOUTS CF AMERICA Scouting was created in the United States in l9lO as a result of an incident occurring in England which inspired Mr. Boyce to create a nation wide Boy Scout movement in the United States. Scouting is a great asset in preparing the youth of our nation and other nations to become respectable citizens. It provides for companionship and teaches many subjects such as first aid and artificial respiration which aids greatly in emergencies. Making the best use of opportunitie being thrifty and helpful are stressed by this movement. It is impartial to any creed or cast. Troop 212 was organized in the summer of 1935 under the sponsorship of the Bellpoint Parent-Teacher Association. Committee or board of directors are as J. Cone, Chairman, Mr. W. W. The boys of the troop have taken a great interest in the activities of scouting. This is shown by their one hundred per cent representation at the Court of Honor. They now have a total membership of eleven members. They are as follows: Wolf Patrol Eagle Patrol Eugene Arehart, leader Joe Boylan, leader George Edelblute Calvin Gone Roger Kincaid John Rutherford John Macklin Harold Pounds Erwin Foreman James Webster Edward Ufferman Since Troop 212 was organized in 1935, the year of the Silver Jubilee, our troop received an emblem showing that it is a silver jubilee troop. As usual the athletic events are the most outstanding, although this has been the most unsuccessful year ever experienced by a Bellpoint team. However this could not be helped and no alibis will be given. A squad of twelve boys answered the call of Coach William Scott for the fall baseball season. However after a few practices Mr. Scott decided that it would be unwise to play inter-scholastic games in the fall due to the small number of boys and the lack of experience. Therefore the entire fall season was devoted to practice with the exception of a game with the Junior High, in which the varsity won 7 - 2. As November neared the boys put away their baseball equip- ment and turned their attention to basketball. With a gloomy outlook and not much encouragement elsewhere, the boys began practice for the season. The team that had won two consecutive championships was gone and only two lettermen remained, the two seniors, Kilbury and Sabine. The remainder of the squad was composed of players of little experience. For a while it was feared that it would be impossible to play second team games, due to the small number of boys, but Mr. Scott drafted Ervin Foreman and Warner Firman from the eighth grade. This enlarged the squad to fourteen members and the ques- tion of reserve games was definitely settled. Of the twelve games played in the county schedule ten were lost and only two won. 364 points were scored by the opponents to 256 for Bellpoint Qthis includes only the league schedule and not the tournament games . Of these points Abe Kilbury scored 102 points, Wray Sabine 2, and Harry Foreman 27..' In the county tournament we met and were defeated by Sunbury 37-17 and by Ashley 25-22. In the dressing room after the game Mr. Scott commended the boys on their spirit shown during the year and expressed his sorrow that the season hadn't been more successful. Jessie Andrews and Leona Kay VanGundy were elected cheer leaders with Mary Healy as alternate. The girls did very well and they, with the rest of the school, gave their support which proved to be as loyal as any in the county even though with a losing team. On April 18, the drawings for the tournament were made in Delaware. We drew Orange with a bye for the second round. The first and second rounds are to be played at the school diamonds, the semi-finals and finals are to be played at Jackson Park, Sunbury. With Mr. Salisbury and Miss Fisher as their coaches the girls developed some fine pass work and played some splendid ball. At each of the home games two girls teams played before the reserve game. These games proved to be very popular with the crowd and drew as much interest as the boys games. The night of each game Miss Fisher acted as the coach and Mr. Salisbury as referee. At the end of the schedule the teams, captained by Darlene Dunlap and Frances Freshwater were tied with two victories and one defeat each, and a playoff was necessary. This game was played at noon March 18, and Frances' team won by a score of 17-12, thereby winning the championship. A banquet was held at noon on March 20 for the winners, fno partners were takenb. Speeches were given by Esther Thomas, Miss Fisher, and Mr. Salisbury. Betty Rodgers acted as toastmaster. After the results were announced the officers were called upon for speeches: both promised to do their best in their new officers. On November l2, a meeting was held in the auditorium where the cheer leaders were tried out. On November 15, they were voted upon, with Jessie Andrews and Leona Mae VanGundy winning. Mary Healy was a close third and therefore was the alternate. The rules of the membership of the Athletic Association were explained by the president. There were twenty-five members in the Association this year which included the fourteen members of the team, the coach and ten girls. All members were addmitted to the home games with their membership tickets and had the privilege of riding on the bus to games. Mr. Hinkle's bus was used for transportation. The association proved a success this year but we urge more outsiders to join in future years. ..56... M, ,, hw--. -..Aff 5 - . K xx I, 'X 'N' ,! The purpose of which was to discover the weaknesses of the high school graduates. These tests were the result of cirticisms of the high schools made by colleges and universities and men of the business world. As a follow-up to the tests the seniors of Bellpoint High School have been given a remedial course under the supervision of Superintendent Salisbury. This class has proved to be highly beneficial in preparing us for entrance to college or business. ' Senior Scholarship Tests March 28, 1936, all over the state of Ohio those seniors ranking in the upper third of their classes competed in a general scholarship test. Those entitled to represent Bellpoint in the tests given at Willis High School were: Betty Rodgers, Abe Kilbury and Wray Sabine. Were anyone of you asked this question you would unhesitatingly answer in the affirmative. You would probably say, UDon't I always boost the basketball teams?W UHaven't I attended all the games?U or Uwhy, I haven't missed a P. T. A. this year.U Maybe so, but there are other ways of showing loyalty or disloyalty to your school. Do you, when around the school house or on the grounds, ever forget to hunt up the waste basket or refuse container before disposing of paper or orange peels? Do you when driving around the school house grounds fail to keep on the hard surface? Do you make scratches, marks or any marks on the buildings? Do you drive your car across or even run across the tennis court? Do you abuse any of the possessions or equipment of the school and laugh it off saying, WWell, it doesn't matter, it belongs to the school? Do you forget to return things that you have borrowed from the school? Do you fail to uphold the teachers in their efforts to discipline and educate your children? V If your candid answers to all these questions is negative, then you are truly a booster for your school. You should feel proud to respond when asked, HAre you loyal to Bellpoint School?W ...5 7...
