4 B.F.A.Mercur EDITORIAL IN ORDER T O E TARLI H A MORE PERFECT UNIUN Whether your future plans include further education, military service, a career in the business world, or becoming a housewife, you will have to share the responsibility of being a citizen of the United States of America. Yes, being an American is a responsibility. If an aggressive force should threaten, it would be up to the members of the armed services to be ready. Others would have to remain at home to keep industry moving. All would be 'expected to give their utmost loyalty to their country. Abraham Lincoln said, 'KA house divided against itself cannot standf' If the United States is to remain standing on alirm base made up of democracy and freedom, weakening factors, such as communism, hatred, and racial segregation must not be allowed to flourish. You, the Graduates of ,56, are leaving the comparative safety of school to go out into the world. Perhaps you will become leaders in some important phaseof business. Some of you might decide to make a career of military service, while others marry and settle down to raise families. A few of you will enter college. For twelve years your parents have sent you to school. Teachers have done their best to teach you the fundamentals of math, history, languages, and science. Gradually, the fact that the United States is made up of 48 states, each working for the good of the others, impressed itself upon your mind. The intricacies of the Congressional system, voting, citizenship duties, and the Constitution became clear and understandable. Now is your chance to prove that you have leamed your lessons well. If you will use your knowledge wisely, be loyal to your country, honor her flag, and worship the Being which saw fit to put us on this earth, you will be strengthening the foundations upon which freedom and democracy are built. -IANET GARVIN
