Innnan and Eugene Ladue, hy dedication of this yearbook. EUGENE LADUE F l. Mercury 11 i CI-I LLENGE By I . Dwmwlmk NVith high school days behind us, we are met with a great challenge-that of going out into life and making a place for ourselves. By accepting this challenge with determination, and taking advantage of all the opportunities that present themselves, welll have a good start down the road to success. However, should we let things go-a-pace, assuming that theyill turn out all right, we'll have a head- start for failure. There are three basic places where this challenge appears. The first and most important is that of making something of ourselves in personal affairs. lf we cannot be individually successful, we will probably never be successful in our dealings with others, or as members of groups. In other words, we wou't be able to get along and get ahead with others unless we can progress individually. Again some of us will meet a challenge in the family unit. If we fail to understand the workings of such a unit, and don't try to iron out the difficulties, failure will be at our heels again. Thirdly, we are challenged in organizations, offices, and public functions. lf our interests are selfish and we donit look at the other fellow's point of view, welll find that we arenit needed in society. lt is essential for the well-being of our cities, states, nation, and even the world, that we find a way to operate success- fully in groups by means of cooperation, leadership, open-miudeduess, and per- serverance, and that we be Willing to accept the responsibility of positions and offices. This challenge cannot be met overnight. but will bc in our path until the death-bed. lf at any point along the way we decide that we have gone far enough, and stop to Q' rest in our former success, we will be neglecting the chal- Q' lenge and failure will be upon us despite our past record. ls MX H, fillment. our greatest challenge? 0 ' . Instead, in keeping with our times, we would like to have you relax and en- joy the panorama of highlights of our class over the television set. The setting is B. F. A., the time, September, 1947, the actors, the brand new, quite bewilder- ed, ever so slightly green, members of the pres- ent class of '51. Our first official business was the election of class officers. Walking across the screen are Guy johnson, president, Clifford Sargent, vice- president, Ted Arel, secretary, and Louis Chabot treasurer. A colorful picture is presented of our Fresh- man Beception, a yearly rite, at which the sopho- mores are the hosts. Youill note the lack of up- per classmen. Now here is a lone figure with a baseball. Thatis right, that freshman year we -had but one representative in the field of sports-eTed Arel, who made the Varsity squad. The girls, not to be outdone, gave us Ieanette Belair and Evelyn Chevalier as cheerleaders. Our scene changes quickly to B. F. A. audi- torium. Here we have the cast of the freshman play, Life O, The Partyv, and their director, Miss Hortense Beeman: Gary McEwen, Gloria Greene, Ianice Church, Betty Towle, Robert Smart, Gloria Frazier, joan jean, Evelyn Cheva- lier, Guy johnson, Fred Dworshak, Boland Bar- low and Lawrence Raymond. We are 'sad-we lost to the sophomores. Quickly moving to September, 1948, the group you see is no longer the bewildered class it was a year agol Here it has a bit more con- fidence, ready to start its sophomore year, Taking a bow are the new class officers: Guy johnson, president, Louis Chabot, vice-presi- dent, Ted Arel, secretary, and Armand Mossey, treasurer. For our sports review, we have Ted Arel and Cliff Sargent in baseball and Dorothy Aldrich in basketball. Betty Towle, Ieanette Belair, and Evelyn Chevalier are the cheerleaders. The year passes quickly and we find ourselves once more on the stage in the Junior Iamboree with our director, Miss Beeman, in Gratitude,'. Our actors are Betty Towle, Carol Asprey, Glo1'ia Greene, Polly Sheltra, and Fred Dworshak. We still look sad-the Freshmen won the plaque. Hereis a close-up of Fred Dworshak, who won first prize in a Safety Campaign Contest on his essay, How Can We Make Our Highways Safer for Our Citizensiw We find Mary Hungerford, Barbara Casa- vant, Virginia Dacey, Nita Hill, and Faith Wil- son sitting around a large table. If you look carefully you will see that they are helping to get the Mercury ready for press. Another September. 1949 is the year. Now you can see our same group entering B. F. A. as upper classmen. The shyness is nearly gone, there is more certainty in everything we do, and we feel this is the year that belongs to us. We wasted no time in electing Louis Chabot, president, Tiny Rich, vice-president, Janice Church, secretary, and Fred Dworshak custo- dian of our funds, to guide us through our junior year. Several members of our class were elected to the Student Council. They were Mary Hunger- ford, vice-president, Nita Hill, secretary, Pauline Sheltra, Iames Abell, Terry Leduc and Louis Chabot, home room representatives. This yearis sportscast shows Arthur Bushey, B. F. A. Mercury 13 Ted Arel, Lawrence Raymond, Gary McEwen, Lee Guertin, Armand Mossey, Louis Chabot, Ronald WVelles and their manager, Bob Bou- dreau, as our contribution to the football picture. The girls, basketball team show Tiny Rich as a fast moving forward and Dorothy Aldrich as a hard-fighting guard. Here the picture is brightened, as spring has arrived, and we see Ready, Arel, Chabot, Sar- gent, Guertin and McEwen once more on Coote Field ready to start the baseball season. This year we were co-champions of baseball in the Northern League. For a quick group of scenes we see Betty Towle, Larry Raymond and Carol Asprey on their way to Burlington to take part in the All- State Chorus. Louis Chabot, Gary McEwen, Dave Ready and Fred Dworshak look like real politicians as they return from Boys, State. These four girls have their share of politics as they attend Girls' State, Nita Hill, Barbara Casavant, Betty Towle, and Mary Hungerford. Yes, we had a play. There is the cast of i'Two Crooks and A Ladyn: Shirley Thompson, Louis Chabot, Tiny Rich, Rita Chenette, Gary McEwen and Thom Rock, with the director, Miss Beeman. Yes, we lost. The next scene shows the sparkle and color of our Iunior Prom. The television screen clouds for a minute, to indicate the passage of time during Junior Final Examinations. Once more the screen is clear and it is the fall of 1950. We all pose for this picture before we start our last year. Ted Arel, president, Mary Hungerford, vice- president, Cliff Sargent, secretary, and Iune Colomb, treasurer, are our choices to lead us this year. NV e are fortunate to get this group in one pic- ture: Leo Nardine, Milford Denner, Ronald XVelles, Armand Mossey, Arthur Bushey, and YVoody Barlow, all members of our Armed Forces. ln the limelight in this scene are the director, Miss Beeman, and the cast of our Senior Play, Skidding'i: Polly Sheltra. Bernard Cadieux, Faith Britch, Carol Asprey, Guy johnson, Larry King, Betty Swisler, Thom Rock, Betty Towle and Bob Smart. Our camera took a quick shot of the B. F. A. stage when Miss Beeman directed the Seniors in this year's junior Iamboree, Curses, The Vil- lian is Foiledn. Thom Rock, Betty Swisler, Faith Britch, Bob Smart, Tiny Rich, and Guy johnson are the cast. Now the reason for this picture- we won, after taking part four years in the Iam- boree. It was a great year in basketball. The Bob- whites were co-champions of the Northern League, and the Comets under Doc Comiis gui- dance were State Champions. Our television camera brought both groups together-David Ready, Ted Arel, Louis Chabot, Gary McEwen, Mary Hungerford, Terry Leduc, Tiny Rich, Bar- bara Casavant, Virginia Dacey, and Shirley Thompson. Here is a quickie of our Senior Supper. Mary Hungerford is the hostess, and Ted Arel, host. Nita Hill and Louis Chabot are taking the honors as Good Citizens. The bus is in front of B. F. A. as june Colomb, Carol Asprey, Polly Sheltra, Nancy Davis, Shir- ley Thompson, Fred Dworshak, Larry Raymond, james Abell, and Lee Guertin climb aboard to participate in All-State Music Festival. Another scene of the editorial room of the Mercury finds Nita Hill, Fred Dworshak, Betty Towle, Gloria Green, Carol Asprey, Bob Smart, Mary Hungerford, Iohn Kendrick, Betty Swisler, Barbara Casavant, Ioan lean, Virginia Dacey, Faith Britch, Mary lean Luneau, Shirley Thomp- son, Mary Cantell, Eunice Messier, Eleanor Sweet, Nancy Davis, Marion Berger, Polly Shel- tra, Larry Raymond, getting out the final edition of the Mercury. The light seems to be fading on the screen, but we still have time to catch a few short scenes of the Mercury banquet, Ivy Day, Class Day, Baccalaureate Service, and last minute happen- ings. Now the screen is dark. VVe have only mem- ories of our four years at B. F. A., our pleasant contacts with Mr. Sunderland and members of the faculty, our close association with our fellow students. Through the medium of television, these scenes on film will many times in years to come llash happily across our minds. B. F. A. We have spent only four short years here, but in that time, we have ac- quired a vast amount of knowledge. It is cus- tomary for the departing class to leave the un- dergraduates shreds of wisdom which it has ac- quired during its short stay at Bellows Free Aca- demy. Of course we can't put in this all that we have accomplished but we shall try. We have been through it all and feel it is our duty to ad- vise a few. We advise: Eddie Paquette to put Venetian blinds in his car so he and Sally won't be dis- turbed during the noon hour. We advise: lean St. Denis to let her hair grow so she can obtain the long flowing locks that Shirley Thompson has. We advise: Mary Murray to start looking for someone else, because Ted will soon be gone. We advise: joan Walsh to get a boy friend that she, too, may enjoy her senior year. We advise: Sue Larow to try to get away with chewing gum like Ercell Tarbox. VVe advise: Carol Elwood to put his height and weight to some advantage like Popp Beau- regard. Now the time has come for the students them- selves to advise their friends. Virginia Dacey advises Mr. Comi to respect her more if he should meet her in future years. Tiny Rich advises Iohn Rhodes to think more and talk less. Faith VVilson advises lane Quilliam and Gloria Frazier to keep the seats in the Trustees, Room warm as she did. Nita Hill advises her sister to be on time now, as she won't be there to use the BATHROOM. Betty Brouillette advises Helen Raine to ac- quire some of her quietness. jan Church advises Janet Fallon to walk down the hall once without twitching. Polly Sheltra advises Lise Duval to take stenography so sheill be able to understand the pained expressions on the stenography class faces. Seeing our time is running short we the class of 1951 are going to leave some advice to the fol- lowing classes. VV e advise: The class of ,52 to bring shoulder pads so they can push against the wheel harder. Huh, Mr. Sunderland? We advise: The class of ,53 to gain as much athletic ability as the class of '51? VVe advise: The class of 1954 to begin to act a little more like high school students as they will soon be sophisticated sophomores. We advise: The class of ,55 to enjoy them- selves over the summer and when they come to B. F. A. to stay clear of Room 21. We advise: The undergraduates to respect the superior upperclassmen. W'e advise: Mr. Comi not to get his hopes up too high, because there still is another Dacey, Swisler, and Colomb to go. VVe think we have given all the advice that is necessary for the undergraduates to know, so they may continue the rest of their years at Bel- lows Free Academy with Great Success. These activities, created to interest the students and bring honor to the deserving ones, have been and are still for the appreciation of the class. For instance, the students who have made them- selves outstanding by attaining a place in the lIall of Fame and the Class History are proud of their achievement. No one knows what the fu- ture holds for them, but I shall endeavor to pro- phesy what the Class of '51 will be doing in the year 1965. Upon graduation I had secured employment with the International Airlines and was imme- diately transferred to the Belgian Congo which caused me to lose contact with all my classmates. Fourteen years later my vacations had accumu- lated until I had a whole year in which to enjoy myself, so I looked up my former classmates. As I drove along the countryside, I came up- on a huge sign reading Bing Lang, Tom Anstey and Larry King, Contractors . Behind the sign was a beautiful white rambling building, on the front door in bold letters was written Hunkis Nlonksfi At this point I had to stop for some gas at the station across the street. Ralph Putnam came to offer his services. He informed me that a lot of work had to be done on the car, there- for I decided to visit the building I had so ad- mired, known as Hunk's Monks. Upon enter- ing I was greeted by the receptionist who intro- duced herself as Virginia Dacey. I told her Iid like to visit the zoo. She gave me a stony look and informed me that I was in a very distinguish- ed home for orphans. After I apologized. she introduced me to the other employees in the room, Jeannette Belair and Eleanor Sweet. sec- retaries. I was looking with envy at their comfortable chairs when suddenly three little boys ran through the room. Close behind them c unc two nurses. I recognized Ioan jean and Betty Brouil- lette. Next I was introduced to the bookkeeper, Estalie Rich. Then the two nurses came back with the culprits and I was allowed to follow them to the childrenis quarters. The murals on the walls were all painted by Denise Bertrand. Teachers Betty Towle and lanice Church were busy making their pupils behave. In another room Iuanita Hill was teaching a group of girls how to mend their stockings, and Pat Boom- hower was showing the boys how to press their trousers. She was having success, too. Betty Muzzy was giving art lessons and Ercell Tarbox was teaching music. By now I was really an- xious to meet Hunk. I was ushered into a very large room with many desks. Some of the per- sonnel had gone out for a smoke, but by the name plates on the desks I learned that Tom Bock was Assistant Manager. His private sec- retary was Faith Britch. Then at the Personnel Manageris desk was a name plate with the name LOUIS CHABOT on it. A newspaper was on his desk. I glanced through it and discovered that Stanley Beauregard was Chief Editor, Ber- nard Cadieux, Cartoonistg and Polly Sheltra was Fashion Editor. At last I met the wizard at the head of this huge institution. Mary Hungerford, a very dig- nified lady, shook hands with me, Now I had visited everything but the orphanage's truck farm which was run by Fred Nichols. Armand Cendron did all the trucking. The products left over were sold to the AGP whose president was Howard MOSS. By now I thought it time to find out if the car was repaired. The proprietor, Guy Johnson, told me that it was not worth Hxing, so I bought 22 B. F. A. Mercury a johnson Speedmaster and continued on my tour. Ahead was a very impressive building and I immediately decided to visit it. It was the Red Cross Center supervised by a very efficient lady, Barbara Casavant. Other nurses there were Nancy Denio, Suzanna Montague and Eunice Messier. They were trying to find a refuge for a man who was being persecuted. It seems that Larry Raymond was running everyone else out of the barbershopping business, and they just couldn't stand it any longer. The Red Cross was out of remedies for ner- vousness so I volunteered to get some at Wayne Harveyis drugstore. There he told me that a gentleman by the name of Fritz Dworshak had just bought the last of it. Mr. Dworshak was working on a new electrical invention, and it was an awful strain on his nerves, too. From the drugstore I went to the hospital. They did have some of the much needed medi- cine. Robert Smart, head of the Research Lab- aratory, had just discovered a new cure for ner- vousness, and Iohn Kendrick was manufacturing it. Their saleswoman, june Colomb, was in for a new supply at the time I was there. In the corridor was a large poster advertising a bene- fit show: Clayton Nelson and His Band with Carol Asprey as vocalist. Shirley Thompson, Star of Television and Radio will play her ac- cordion and sing. Also appearing-Rita Che- nette-Blue Singer. A mile from the hospital was a ballfield, and the game in session was for the entertainment of the hospital patients. Everytime the name of the player Dave Ready was mentioned, cheers arose that were deafening. Most of the ladies were in a swoon. I didnit think it was that warm. Marilyn Hubbard and julia William's horse ranch could be seen from the ball park. Leo Guertin, navy recruiting officer, and john Poland, Air Force recruiting officer, were trying to talk some boys into joining the service. john Poland succeeded in getting Clifford Sar- gent and Gary McEwen to join his branch of the service. They planned to major in calisthenics. At the time they made up their minds, an attrac- tive Wave was walking by. I wonder if she had anything to do with their decision? A girl was hurrying to catch up with the at- tractive Wavef, When she did, she all but squeezed her to death. Terry Leduc, .itis been ages since I saw youf, Why, Chevvy, I havenit seen you in a long time eitherf, By eavesdrop- ping, I learned that Chevvy was Evelyn Che- valier, a dental secretary. I couldnit leave without visiting the school, so I did. Ray Ladue was teaching bookkeeping. I canit forget the triumphant expression on his face. He didn't look as though he had difficulty in attaining his position. Nancy Davis was the Home Economics teacher. jimmy Abell and Gloria Greene were also on the faculty. Marion Berger was working in the office. She liked the school so much, she couldnit leave it. I stayed for the assembly program. Mary Cantell spoke to the students about the oppor- tunities for telephone operators. I came out with the student body at dismissal time. Ted Arel, now a policeman, was on the sidewalk scaring the daylights out of a freshman who had taken a shortcut on the grass. Bob Boudreau's taxis were doing a good business taking some of the students home. A lot of the boys were rushing for Gerry L,Esperanceis Clothing Store. He was having a sale on flashy ties and socks. On their way some of the boys saw hot-rods dis- played at George Rand's Machine Shop, so they put their pennies in the bank instead. Above IjEsperance,s Store was a Hairdress- ing Salon-Faith Wilson, Proprietor. Now that I have seen everyone, it is time to say farewell. I want to wish the Class of '51 thc best of luck in achieving their ambitions. I wonder what changes will have occurred to the Class of '51 when I come back in 1980?
