EDI I I. Spellrng For The Graduate This June-as in Junes gone by-thousands of young men and women will be stepping out of high schools and colleges all over the country. All will speak the same language, but what a variation in spelling there will be. This question of spelling is one of the most important factors in education today. Because of the immense variation of sounds, English, or more properly, American, is the most difficult of all languages to learn to spell. Whereas the Italian and Spanish children scarcely have to be taught to spell, the American child has to learn to spell each word separately. The practice of learning to spell each word as a separate unit is the basic principle of the Chinese and the Egyptian. This Eastern teaching has long been considered the reason for their inferiority in civilization. Another point worth considering is the amount of money our spelling costs us every year. Did you ever stop to consider what it costs every year to print the eu in are ? VVith the money used in printing these sounds we could improve our country immensely. , But what can be done about it? you may very well ask. I am no great author whose style is followed by thousands. My only writing consists of a few letters to friends and they would probably think me slightly insane. The answer seems to be that if we recognize these absurdities in spelling, we have taken a long step toward their abolition. Once we become rfully conscious of these absurdities, nothing can turn us from the campaign. If enough American citizens become con- verted to this new crusade, their descendants will be spelling sanely in a few gen- erations. This, of course, depends upon proper educational methods. May the graduates of ,239 join this new movement so that the graduates of '69 will not be forced to undergo the spelling lessons which have caused us such torture. Anniversaries Twenty-fifth anniversaries are always marked with much celebration. This year we have not one but two silver anniversaries to celebrate. The first class gift was presented by the seniors' twenty-five years ago. This year also marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the senior play. The first play was presented the second of December, 1913. This year, our seniors gave their play the first and second of December just twenty-five years later. hlay both of these worthy customs be observed by the class of 1989I Appreciation Tim lhlERCl'llY staff wishes to express gratitude to all those people or organiza- tions who have helped in the past year to make our paper a success.
