The opening of Bellows Falls Union High School in September of 1971 culminated years of discussion and planning on the part of many people in the towns of Athens, Grafton, Rockingham, and Westminister. These towns had formed Union High School District 27 in the year 1966 for the purpose of providing a school facility and a school program designed to expand the educational opportunities of the youth in particular and the people in general. Throughout the decade of the sixties, the educational needs and the financial abilities of the four towns to satisfy these needs had been vigerously debated. Out of the debate and the efforts of countless people has come a plant and a program which have attracted nationwide at- tention. If there is one single word which characterizes the philosophy of both plant and program, it is flexibility . Rather than construct a building designed specifically for a curriculum of the moment, it was decided to build for the future by providing large open spaces which can be altered to serve programs not yet envisioned. Rather than build a program designed solely for 1971, it was decided to build a pro- gram based on the idea of continuous revision. What has been accomplished to this point is the organization of a school in some respects quite different from that which went before and in other respects very much the same. The essential spirit, however, among students, staff, and community has been one of willingness to attempt new ways, to evaluate these ways, to discard those which do not seem to serve their purpose, and to try again. Bellows Falls Union High School pretends to no man that it has found the solution to the educational problem. It merely says that it has made an attempt to adapt itself to the changing needs of people in a changing society and that it will continue this attempt in the future. — Charles C.
