IQNa xavioa student (stood °nt) n. 1. a person formally engaged in learning, esp. one enrolled in an institution of secondary or higher edu- cation. 2. any person who studies, inves- tigates, or carefully examines a subject. — adj. 3. of, by, or pertaining to students, esp. of colleges or universities We are the stu- dents of the world and Bellows Falls Union High School — 1973! — The Random House Dictionary of the English Language scholarly sleepy so talented! serious? thinkers. asleep. BELLOWS sometimes mischievous sometimes dreaming sometimes studying sometimes enjoying school sometimes skipping sometimes seeking help always conscientious! The opening of Bellows Falls Union High School in September of 1971 culminated years of discussion and planning on the part of many people in the towns of Athens, Grafton, Rockingham, and Westminister. These towns had formed Union High School District 27 in the year 1966 for the purpose of providing a school facility and a school program designed to expand the educational opportunities of the youth in particular and the people in general. Throughout the decade of the sixties, the educational needs and the financial abilities of the four towns to satisfy these needs had been vigerously debated. Out of the debate and the efforts of countless people has come a plant and a program which have attracted nationwide at- tention. If there is one single word which characterizes the philosophy of both plant and program, it is flexibility . Rather than construct a building designed specifically for a curriculum of the moment, it was decided to build for the future by providing large open spaces which can be altered to serve programs not yet envisioned. Rather than build a program designed solely for 1971, it was decided to build a pro- gram based on the idea of continuous revision. What has been accomplished to this point is the organization of a school in some respects quite different from that which went before and in other respects very much the same. The essential spirit, however, among students, staff, and community has been one of willingness to attempt new ways, to evaluate these ways, to discard those which do not seem to serve their purpose, and to try again. Bellows Falls Union High School pretends to no man that it has found the solution to the educational problem. It merely says that it has made an attempt to adapt itself to the changing needs of people in a changing society and that it will continue this attempt in the future. — Charles C. Everyone suffered in the cold on the patio when smoking, got used to eating whenever the cafeteria was open, 1,000 visitors, the long day and in general proceeded to go around in total awe of what was happening. Learning takes place almost everywhere in our school and it happens in many ways. Teachers and stu- dents can often be found having informal educational discussions, viewing materials in the audio visual area, or reading in the resource center and various other areas of the building. Everyone is becoming more adjusted this year as everyone is learning what to expect from one another. The enthusiasm of the students shows in various areas of the school, but particularly in the co-curricular activities. The interest in the many clubs has been exciting. The first year at B.F.U. H.S. was a great success. This year the students and their student leaders, the faculty and administration deserve a great deal of credit for the progress that has been accomplished at our school in the name of open concept education. POPS CONCERT Our annual Pops Concert, this year entitled “Spring Thing , took on a new format. Instead of staying with tradi- tion, a few new touches were added and the result was a new type of concert. All the choral groups performed — the Girls' Glee Club, Choral Ensemble, and Mixed Chorus. Along with this, the instrumental groups were added — the Stage Band, a Sax Ensemble, and a gui- tar group. Mr. Brys, the choral director, was very pleased with the performances of all his choral groups. He looks forward to another very good year next year with all his performing groups. Jim Sears TRACK IS BACK Head Coach Peter Petty and his three assistants, Francis Coyne, George Ruland and Fred Stolle signed up a record number of participants for this year. Track, however, is more than receiving awards after a race or at the end of the year. In order to receive the awards, one must really work long and hard during practices. This fact might have led to the record number of boys who also dropped out. Hard work did pay off, though, for the thirty-five who stuck with it all season. Sophomore Jim Sears, weight-man captain, qualified for the New Eng- land Track Meet by placing third in the discus with a throw of 130'5 Vi . John Dockum, a junior, received the Most Improved Weight-Man tro- phy, and came on strong near the end of the year in both the shot put and the javelin. Tim Allen, a sophomore, captured third place in the pole vault at the State Meet, qualifying for the New England's by clear- ing the bar at 12'6 . Tim also received the Most Improved Jumper trophy. Leroy Lloyd, another sophomore, qualified for the State Meet in the 220 yard sprint. Greg Francis, only a freshman, took home the Most Improved Runner trophy and is doing well in the half-mile. An out- standing long distance runner, Duane Miller, continually broke the school's two-mile record, bringing the time down to 9:49.6. Duane, a junior and captain of the runners, ran the mile as well as the two, and captured first-place in both events at the Southern District Meet. He took third-place in the mile at the State Meet, qualifying for the New England Track Meet. Despite all this talent, the Terriors didn't win any of their eleven meets. The team is only losing two seniors though and promises to improve under Coach Petty over the next few years. ROW 7 — R. Francis, F. Boggess, T. Eno, E. Smith, D. Miller, J. Sears, B. McWilliams, L.
