Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1972 volume:

Promise S leeping beauty in the meadow, grey brick and white marble chips. It was planned for. It was dreamed of and now the dream and idea lie in the Westminster meadow. In September students entered within and now the heart beats and the idea is alive. Shall the meadow sleep softly? or shall it be disturbed by the cries of students involved in endeavors of victory and feel the pulse of a mind blooded and christened in accomplishment and knowledge and knowing? S leeping beauty full of promise and full of life, yet so calm is thy rest in the Westminster meadow. And how brave are thy ideals of free independent minds. Susan M. Smatlheer gymnasium POWER METAL SHOP S OP ELEC SHOP first AID INSTR WOOD SHOP SCALE 0;:% )POSED UNION HIGH SCHOOL - DISTRICT 27 NS OF GRAFTON, ROCKINGHAM A WESTMINSTER, VERMONT A time to plant, a time to reap You, the taxpayers and voters of Union 27, planted” the so-called seeds of education” in this area when you decided to build this new school. You have given the students a school with a much more re- laxed atmosphere for learning; you have given us more respon- sibility and need for self-discipline than ever before; you have given us a sense of pride in our school, boosting our spirit; you have given us the open concept of learning, a concept which stimulates our interests and achievements. Now, it is our time, a time for us to reap” the benefits and opportunities offered to us. You have given us responsibility, and we are ready to accept it. We thank you for giving it to us. Anne M. These people are here to give us greater knowledge and understanding of an important field. MATH In the math department are the men who teach us how to figure out all those symbols, theories, and equations; “a guide to a more systematic way of think- ing,” is their motto. Little do we realize how much math we need! In the picture at the right are our math teachers: Mr. Richard Fisher, student teacher: Mr. Stanley Johnson, co-ordina- tor: Mr. Richard Rogers and Mr. Gerald Curcuru. aVb = £ 'bfcO® New courses such as SAD. Musically we made our debut at the dedication ceremonies with contemporary music based on Shakespeare texts quite a combination! We have scheduled rehearsals, and music can be heard every period, every day, under the direction of Mr. Henry or Mr. Brys. The Choral Ensemble showed its ability in the production of the record, ‘‘Two Sides of Christmas, under the direction of Uncle Billy” Brys — another first for B.F.U.H.S. Mr. David Henry and Mr. William A. Brys 18 ART Art teaches students how to perfect their creativity, a great gift to man. Gym classes give you a break from equations and dates--the opportunity to seek healthy physical competition. This course pro- vides the fullfilment of “a sound mind in a sound body. All right, that plan should do it. Yes!!! Miss Rodia. Just give it a kick! I told you not to let those kids get on the bus early! Mrs. Barbara Nutt. Aide in the Learning Disabilities Center. Among our more active programs is the Harbor Plan. These students, un- der the direction of Mr. Leonard Scott, have constructed an Ecology Center for the High School. Under the able direction of Mr. Mark Kennedy some of our students are able to receive additional help. The project of the Harbor Plan, the Ecology Center. 21 Mr. Leonard Scott. Director, Harbor Program. HOME ARTS This is a year of great adventure in teaching the basics of living, food and clothing. Our daring home arts teach- ers took on boy's home economics, bachelor living and a boy’s sewing class. Classes covered usual meal planning plus pickling and making old fashioned jams and jellies. As por- trayed here, the boy’s chef class cli- maxed in a turkey dinner. Mrs. Lora Adams and Mrs. Barbara Comtois. What do you see? Go light on the dressing for me. Kevin. 22 INDUSTRIAL ARTS Learning to work with your hands is the key to the operation of the Industrial Arts department. Many new machines and equipment and loads of new ideas are present this year, as the students seem to enjoy working with wood and metal. In the electronics area, students are introduced to the laws of applied electronics, with the goal of understanding the basics of electricity and elec- tronics. In the mechanical drawing area, a varie- ty of 3-dimensional plans are conceived and cre- ated, for items ranging from cylinders to houses. 23 Does he really expect us to believe that? Those were the days Mrs. Brown, our Latin leader. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Offering both French and Latin, our foreign language de- partment is one of the most exciting areas in our new school. Utilizing a well-equipped language laboratory and talented personnel, students are sharing in many reward- ing experiences. Another trip a travers I’ocean was offered. SEATED, L. TO R. — Natt Divoll. Now that we have introduced our new school, and the people in charge of its sever- al areas, we present the men who are responsible for it all, behind the scenes but in command; the Union High Scool District No. 27 School Board and their executive officer, Superintendent Harry Noyes. The patience and careful planning of the school board and administrators brought out school through many stages, from early design through construction to the finished product. BEHIND THE SCENES... Pamela Pellerin in Girls' Physical Education, and Deborah Di Salvo and Sam Gengenbach in Social Studies, plus David Blake in Social Studies, from Castleton. William Dugan in Social Studies, Richard Fisher in Mathematics, and Jeanne Lippman in Girls' Physical Education, all from Keene, N.H. State College. Mr. Royce Mrs. Michaud Miss Nickerson This year was a new beginning for everyone. There were few rules or regulations, and often it seemed like few who knew what was going on! It was a time for changes — who ever expected to be able to go out for a smoke during free time or between periods, play cards and eat anytime the big brown sliding door was open! Whoever expected the teachers would have to brave the elements out on the patio with the rest of us! For once we were all suffering together — the long days, more responsibilities and expectations, the bomb scares, and the day the skylight broke in the gym. We also celebrated together — a brand new school with two state championships! Through it all, however, the usual activities and clubs managed to organize and function, even adding some welcome new ones like the school store. As it was, we started out in the old high school on School Street, coming in from Bellows Falls, Grafton or Westminster schools. So it began . . . Freshman year was Freshman Reception with a little Latin and IPS thrown in an unusual dose of Miles J. Sweeney and requests — demands — to be someone — and to do something sprinklings of psychedelic flora on the walls, and T ripodes as scretary — in reality we did nothing. Sophomore year was Biology with Peter or Peggy Junius Caesar and Miss Fetch a dance that never happened purple halls, yellow walls music in the cafeteria a new 210 and ground being broken in a Westminster meadow. Junior year was ‘Neptune's Garden” a 3-in-l fiasco in Physics PSAT’s in the freezing Armory ‘‘Stars and Stripes Forever” the boiler-room fire and even a building in Westminster. Senior year was the New School the passing of old ways, old rules championships in Middlebury and Springfield the passing of PD red, white and blue — no — blue, white and wine everything coming up crazy. 112 So it goes .. .
