SMITH SCHOOL BOARD On the eveninglof April 5, 1951 the members of the four school districts met in Vernon Hig School. This was the meeting that everyone was waiting for. As the individual articles of the agreement were passed, a secretary typed the final pages of the contract. By 1:30 a. m. April 6, 1951 the twenty members of the Joint School Board had signed their names. The Bellmarette Joint School District was born. At this early moming meeting the following officers were elected: J, KASUDA President - Donald Duvall, Vice President - Blanden Bulger, Treasurer - John Cameron. At a later meeting the office of secretary was divided into two officers - recording secretary, and financial secretary, and J. E. Kuhn as recording secretary. At this point, one would have thought all the work was finished, actually this is where it started. The budget, election of personnel, inspection of building and grounds, textbooks and sup lies, transport- ation and athleticsg all of these were carefully studied by various committees and tgeir suggestions submitted to the Joint Committee or Joint Board for action. Now while watching the system develop, the long hard hours of work can be recalled as a worthy task. To the members of the Bellmarette Joint School Board - an orchid for a job well done.

These were the words we have been hearingufor a long time conceming a joint school program. The invisible county line d been a barrier almost as hard to penetrate as the iron curtain or so it would seem from the debating of ideas for years. It can happen here! Shortly after the 1950-5lschool term started, representatives from severalof the surrounding school districts met at the Marion High School. At this meeting Mr. Harry Brownfield, Fayette County Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. James Hughes, Westmoreland County Superintendent of Schools, informed the group as to the procedure in forming joint school districts. Four of the local districts continued meeting in the interest of a joint school program. These districts were Fayette City, Be e Vemon, North Belle Vemon, and Washington Township. At the Fayette City meetinsg it was agreed that Mr. Fee would be the super- vising Principal, and Mr. Van remen, t e assistant to the supervising principal. At this same meeting it was decided to have preliminary articles 0 agreement drawn up. It did happen here!
