Ecology and environment were words that were being tossed about quite freely then. Everywhere people rose to the occasion of doing something for the sake of ecology. Many people blamed it on the government, yet some pushed it on fellow man. Until they realized that environ- mental awarness covers it all. After years of increasing disruptive protests, the U.S. pulled out of the Vietnam War, and the Communists took over. The Watergate scandle and it's repercusions lead to the resignation of President Nixon. America celebrated its Bicentennial. Iranian hos- The Way We Were, tage lead to President Carter's defeat by Ronald Reagan. Carter conceded before Westcoast polls closed. 21. Best Years o ur Lives The l98O's have been years that looked back to the past and moved on to the future. Musicians from the past such as Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Pete Townshend, Heuy Lewis, James Brown, Robert Plant, Aerosmith, Starship, Chicago, Paul McCartney, Sting, and The Hooters made big comebacks in the 8O's. New Artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston, Sade, Duran Duran, Prince, Tears for Fears, and Bryan Adams also topped the charts in the 8O's. The video industry became popular along with programs like MTV, Night Trax, Night Flight, and Friday Night Videos. Song lyrics were used to protest apartheid, abortion, starvation, the cold war, and crime. Groups like Northern Lights, USA for Africa, Hawaii for Africa, Artists United Against Apartheid, Live Aid and Farm Aid raised Sl 37 million to help the people ofthe world. The 80's also brought the first rock concert in China by Wham.
