Throughout the week we boasted our team would beat Mt. Vernon’s Bulldogs, in which we did in a 20-6 victory. Reigning over the contest was Homecoming Queen, Sue Ritter, escorted by Sr. representative, Marty Hatfield. Her court and their escorts were: Juniors, Cathy Barnes and Dan Royal; Sophomores, Nancy Roberts and Jeff Jenkins; and Freshmen, Karen Christofferson and Dennie Reynolds. Replacing Mr. Don Krag as director, was Mr. Jim Langston, who was just as new to this kind of an experience as was many in the cast. Despite this, and the fact that we were nearly two weeks behind schedule, he whipped us into fine shape which constituted in a fine performance by all who participated. Along with the individual talents of Scott Lee, who provided much of the written material, and the singing talents of Marcia Merritt, Linda Elsner, and Gregg Reynolds, the Swing Chorus and the Orchestra performed such numbers as, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, “One Tin Soldier’, and “More”. Others who assisted were, Mr. Wayne Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Schlicting, Mr. David Beard, who has replaced the inevitable Miss Debbie Gibbs as choral director, along with student assistants, Sue Solvang and Joyce Canaan. From Freshmen to Seniors, they keep on oom-paw-pawing! Other than keeping their noses pointed to the wind at football halftime shows, the band members have performed in the Christmas and Winter Concerts which included all members from each class level. Another event they've partaken in, is the British Canadian instigated Tatoo, which Mr. Ralph Pauley explained, was like a marching concert. At press time, hopes for a Bicentennial Band were in the planning stages. This band will compete against other schools in Bellingham, as well as perform at various organizations around town. To bring the year to a successful close, “Uncle” Ralph and his kids will compete at the annual band contest as they’ve done in the past. GRMN Ie 128 % 12 DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight. I just smashed that buzzard’s face with all my might; I just chopped that darned ol’ pear tree down and burned it just for spite. Then, with one single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge. On the second day after X-mas, I pulled on those old rubber gloves, and gently, oh so very gently, wrung the necks of both them turle doves. Well, on the thrid day after Christmas my auntie caught the croup. I had to use those three french hens to make some chicken soup. Now, let me tell you about those four calling birds, they were one heck of a mistake. I just ran them straight through the neck with a garden rake. The only reason I did it cause they kept pooping in the lake. Those five golden rings, they were completley fake, so fake, they turned my fingers green. The sixth day after X-mas those six geese wouldn’t lay, so I brought in Goosie Gander and they were busy all that day. On the seventh day after Christmas, what-a mess my true love. I shot all those swimming swans and each one of them had drowned. On the eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect, I bundled up those eight old maids-a-milking, those nine pipers piping, those ten ladies dancing, those eleven weird lords-a-leaping, and of course those twelve drummers and their plastic tomtoms, and sent them back collect. (Actually I kept one of the drummers). Then I sat myself down and wrote my love a note. It went something like this: ‘My dear true love, were quite through. Why don’t you put a bag on your head and see if your turn blue. My dear true love, your gifts they were absurd and further more, my ex-true love, I think your’re for the birds: Four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. by Francis Silver (Revised by Lisa Carlsen) Sennen eer aon ell eerie é 2. The story deals with the elderly Brewster sisters, Abbey and Martha, who have put it upon themselves to aid lonely old gentlemen. They do so by poisoning them with elderberry wine, they bury them in their celler with the help of their nephew, Teddy. Teddy is totally convinced that he’s Theodore Roosevelt. In the course of one September night, the three are beseiged by an onsought of guests: Teddy’s brother Mortimer, who unintentionally discovers his aunts ‘mercy mission’; His fiance, Elaine Harper, who finds herself suddenly snubbed by Mort; The sudden and unexpected return of Mortimer and Teddy’s brother, Jonathan and his associate Dr. Einstein; the Brooklyn police, among others; plus two very cold stiffs thrown into the window seat for good measure, as well as a few laughs. The Red Raiders came out of the dark again to be a strong contender in the NWAAA League with a very respectable 7- 2 record. With an explosive offense and a sturdy defense the Raiders defeated the two teams expected to dominate the NWAAA League. A twenty point second half surge and a tough defense defeated the league champion Mt. Vernon Bulldogs 20-6. Then to finish the season off, a fine team effort shutout the Sehome Mariners 19-0, which was the first time in seven years that the Raiders have beaten Sehome. Having two fine seasons in a row for mentor Vel West, you can bet the rest of the league will cast a wary eye on the Raiders in the future. As for the Seniors, it is a good way to end their fine careers at B.H.S. and give them something to look back on. Individual standouts were Captain Chris Bergner who set new Frosh records with a 16.5 scoring average and a 13.1 rebound average per game. Jeff McCauley established a new field goal accuracy mark by hitting on 50% of his attempts, and also averaged 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
