Watching them do this, one may wonder who worked harder, they or the players. Those eight smiley, sparkly, spirited, and loveable young ladies did have a lot of fun being cheerleaders, but they found that it took a lot of hard work, time, and brain-strain. This was in the form of organizing their songs and dance routines, schedules, making four or five different outfits each, planning Pep Assemblies and running around to all the sports events, often several in one day, rain or shine. After all this, plus keeping above average grades, they still manage to look great at the end of the day. The Juniors won this year’s homecoming hands knickers down with their big leads in almost all competitions. The Freshmen came in with a bang as they came out with second. The theme was The Roaring 20’s and proved to be a lot of fun as dizzy dames swished around in dainty high heels fringed silk dresses, beads furs escorted by a few brave guys from the Gatsby era. Kicking around all over were guys gals in ties, knickers, flashy argyles. The spirit was enhanced by the wall decorations in every hall ranging from the swingy wild life of the young people, to the dark and dangerous life of gangsters bloody Mafia shoot-outs. The week must have worn everyone out since we lost our game, but we know we're better than Sehome anyway, as our RECORD proves. The theme literally meant to enter and to exit. Students entered and combined their talent to exit triumphantly from one of the best shows ever. An estimated 150 students pooled their time and talents to entertain before approximately 800 people on November 8th. The show was a combination of skits and songs, many of which were prepared and composed by members of the cast. Some new talent was produced this year as singers. Probably the newest and most original of the singers was the quartet of three, performed by three freshmen. It seemed to please the audience. The dramatic highlight of the show was when Joyce Canaan recited a piece called “Love.” This year’s Swing Chorus again played their part by performing such songs as the ENTERTAINER. For the first time in recent years a few members of the faculty _ performed songs. Miss Debbie Gibbs sang ‘‘For Bobby’’ and Mr. Mark Schlichting dedicated the song “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” to his wife Gretchen. Last but not least let us not forget the crew, who spent quite a few extra hours above and beyond the call of duty in preparing the show. Without these people the show would never go on. Again Mr. Krag and his assistant Thom Leonard are to be thanked for their theatrical direction. All in all the show was original and creative. Contratulations to the cast and crew of the What-A-Sho 1974. Red Raider Band B.H.S. is the proud owner of a special and highly exclusive item, a 135-piece marching band under the direction of Mr. (Uncle Ralph) Pauley. It is this man, with Mr. Chuck Trentman’s help, who has given so much time, devotion, and talent that we can thank for producing the best band possible. Of course, it is an honor to be a member of that highly disciplined and talented band, and to know that you belong to something so great, that awards and travel become a way of life. For instance, last Spring they took First Place in the Blossomtime; then during their 10-day return to Hawaii, they received 2nd Place in Kamehameha Day Parade out of twelve bands participating. Next they played at the P.N.E. to pick up their 26th consecutive First Place. In September at band day at the University of Washington the band entertained 50,000 spectators of the U.W. vs. Iowa game during halftime. We hear their spirited music throughout the year at parades, football and basketball games, and pep assemblies. They play in the Christmas and Spring Concerts and the Stage Band performs throughout town. Missing: Dave Pierce, Mark Seaman, Darren Mihara, Cindy Wold, Chris Bryan, Gregg Reynolds, Terry Zehnder, Kathy Black, Robert Bussard, Curt Genther, Diane Rauch, Laurie Bergner, Debbie Pfannanstiel, Lisa Hinton, Ron Funk, and Mike Jansen. The new thing this year was a Christmas dinner- dance sponsored by the class of ’75. This dance took place at the Elks’ Club on the first Monday night of the Christmas vacation, Dec. 23, 1974. Dress consisted of many styles, from long dresses to dress pants, but there were no jeans. The evening started at 7:00 p.m. with a fantastic buffet style dinner then dancing began at 8:30 p.m. with the great music of “Higher Ground.” The dance was a _ huge success. seh horny 2 inosine { ES nee : : bl reas a 5 D v 8 v) oe = 7 ouaa ix a ew Junior Prom e 4 é The night the class of ’76 had been waiting for finally arrived November 23, 1974. Compiling a 6-3 overall record and a 5-2 conference record the Raiders claimed sole position of 2nd place in the NW AAA League. It sure feels good to win! Giving up pounds and inches, the guys replaced them with blazing speed and a determination and coordination together to earn them the name of “Raider Brothers.” Our “Mighty Midgets” gave all they had. The most exciting game of the season came against the Ferndale Golden Eagles. The whole night was frantic and at the end of the game the score was 14 all! NW AAA league rules made overtime possible. After 2 overtimes the Raiders ruled 26-20! We played a great game against the huge Mt. Vernon Bulldogs; outwitting them for 24 points! The defense chalked up their 3rd shutout of the year. One day a martian landed in the midst of a BHS wrestling match. As he watched, he became more and more confused as two guys in stocking suits stood on a hard mat and shook hands. Then they backed away and started circling each other with their hands outstretched and stiff. Suddenly, they lunged together and began a series of twists, bends, strange body and facial contortions and even piggyback rides. Meanwhile, a little man in a striped shirt rolled around on the floor watching them. Soon the martian picked up strong vibrations from the two guys. They seemed to say, ‘“Win, win, Win!” “Gotta- gittim-down!” The crowd is yelling, the struggling became more intense. At last, strength, endurance and or self preservation won out as one guy floored the other. The winner jumped up and raised an arm as his fellow teammates rushed over to slap him on the back (or head). Crazy earthling dances! This season’s high point came as 9 team members were sent to the 1975 Regional Tournament. This concluded a successful season of participation in a Conference Dual Meet, the Auburn Invitational Tourney, BHS Wrestlerama, and an interleague Double-Dual Meet. She started work at Bellingham High School in February 1959, as secretary to the principal. Zelda left work at B,H.S. in January 1964, to work in Hawaii, but returned to us in June 1965. While at B.H.S. Mrs. Rickens was secretary to three principals; Mr. Feldmann, Mr. Frazier, and Mr. Stephan. At this time, Mrs. Rickens has no future plans, except for fishing with Rick, maybe going to Hawaii this fall, and just being lazy.
