IC LIBRARY li TTL IMMh 3 1833 07539 Presented by the Students of Bellingham HighSchool Bellingham, Washington Se Ue oo SA ia Individuality In a complex world of automation and standardization, individuality and _ its meanings become momentarily lost in our efforts to conform to standards and ideals dictated to us by society. Never- theless, each and every one of us is different. We have different interests and goals. It is during our years of educational training, particularly those which con- stitute high school, that our individual personalities, motivations, goals, and frustrations combine to form our u- niqueness. In this, your 1967 Shuksan, you will see individuals engaged in work and play; expressing themselves in their own unique way. Introduction ........ Activities. 2 77, ‘Sports (0 | VTech .5 0 22. Study is an essential part of school life. Its importance cannot be over emphasized. Much of a student’s time is devoted to study, and determines much of the stu- dent's performance in class. ii i School life provides many areas in which our individual personalities may be expressed. In the chem. class, and in the quiet atmosphere of the study hall, personality becomes apparent in the chem. students’ work, and in the general studies of everyone. ®- ea. The crew certainly deserves the recognition they very seldom get. “Ain't We Got Fun’ smectic Oa DEED The 1966 What-A-Sho proved to be one more showcase of our school's spirit of individualism. The theme of the show was unique in itself. It was the “The Ballyhoo Years’’ of the 1920's, the era in which pop culture was born. The plot, written by student directors Cindy Green and Fred Wheeler, was typical of the mysteries popular at this time. Other ballyhoo fads included were the Charleston, speakeasies, vaudeville, and the Ziegfield Follies. Dazzling sets, Gershwin music by the orchestra, and beautiful Royalty completed the excitement of the evening. The Juniors picked “Ro- man Festival” for the theme of the dance. Working for weeks in ad- vance, the juniors transformed Bel- lingham High School's gym into a truly beautiful Roman court. The courtyard was centered around a fountain with water flowing down one of the many ivy covered columns that decorated the gym. The atmosphere was completed by the entrancing music supplied by the College Dance Band. The court- yard was filled with couples grandly attired in their formal wear. Students Attend Roman Festival Christmas at Bellingham High School was a combination of cheer, friendship, and goodwill as shown in the efforts of the entire student body who made the lives of twenty-five families a little merrier on Christmas Day. This year’s food drive was a success as each third period class and several clubs brought in boxes of food for needy families. The sponsor, Girls’ Club, was pleased to see Key Club bring in the most goodies of all the clubs. At the Xmas assembly where the food was displayed, there was entertainment from clubs, the band, and swing chorus. Another specta- cular event of the Christmas season was the Tolo where girls took their lucky partners to the gym for an evening of dancing and refreshments. Also a credit to this season was the main hall where the traditional Xmas tree was donned with new ornaments and music was played during all three lunches. Rounding off this spirited season was Charlie Brown’s Xmas tree as displayed in the main office. Even the saddest looking tree could be decor- ated with care to become a thing of beauty in the eyes of the beholder. the Halls...” CO © DN ay 5 ) ao = ie OU a oe t “a5 pee a. Stage Crew puts in many hours of hard work prior to performance. iS f) 2 Cael © {2 Cc 0 C), O le. = ie = S For months the cast and crew of the Sound of Music worked and rehearsed to put on a truly outstanding show. From the beginning of the show when the curtain rose on Maria (Cindy Green or Gaye Reasoner) singing the “Sound of Music’ high in the mountains to the finale of “Climb Every Mountain” sung by the entire nun’s chorus, the audience was surely moved by the professional manner of the show. Captain VonTrapp (Steve Mura) led the cast playing in three evening performances and one matinee entertaining both adults and children. Perhaps the most interesting part of the show for the children was seeing the various grade school students play the parts of the seven VonTrapp children. The three eldest ones (Margie Stoner, Hugh Brown, Wendy Grunhurd) were from the high schools. Rolfe (Dan Howe) sang and danced with Liesel (Margie Stoner) to provide the romantic highlights of the show while Uncle Max (Mike Karuza) and the Baroness (Candi Mitchell) took the rather humorous parts of the show. Backstage (in the gym) the cast found ways to entertain themselves while they awaited their cues. Some played basketball, some flew paper airplanes, others played ‘poker’, ‘Clue’, and other games while still others got blessed by Mother Abbess (Barb Engman). Had it not been for stage manager Stan Flanders telling everybody “where to go’ and Mrs. Baker encouraging the cast to do their best, the show would not have been the acclaimed hit it was. Under Mr. Pauley’s careful direction, our band does activities like participating in the P.N.E., doing a concert for the Rotary Club, and going to the Victoria competition in the spring. Besides that, the band supplies the music for our pep rallies, home games, and the Spring Concert. It is clear by their good conduct, excellent music, and great reputation that our band really lives by its motto: “Desire, Pride, Satisfaction.” HFreshmen Paula Groves Grant Gaskill The freshman class of 1970 will be the first to graduate since the new school changeover. Their interest in B.H.S. showed in the many activities at school. Freshmen worked hard to make home- coming a success. They initiated many new and exciting activities such as the Skating Party, which added to our already sub- stantial treasury. And it was fun too! Senior representatives Sandi Lund and Jeff Goltz led the Valentine's Assembly, where many seniors were honored. Among many other honors were the Seniors crownings of What-A-Show Queen Mary Young and Football Homecoming Queen Janet Mumma. That Homecoming was praised by the alumni and all, due greatly to the efforts of the Senior Pep Club girls and our song and yell leaders. Our senior song and yell leaders .... They were different, but the “bestest ever.” And the many seniors who played varsity football comprised the best team in 25 years. It was a great class, and a great year. For the first time in ten years, Bellingham had a boy cheerleader. Working with nine girls, he had one of the most enviable positions in the school, although he would never admit it. When they were not begging the Shuksan photographer to take their picture, the ten song and yell leaders daily turned Mr. Jones’ office into a pep factory turning out such products as locker signs, posters, and new routines. With sixteen returning lettermen this was to be a very versatile and talented team. Raider fans were let down somewhat as the Raiders made too many mental errors and dropped the opener to Ferndale 21-7. The following week the Redmen got on the right track with a 26-7 win over Meadowdale. After an easy victory over Vancouver Col- lege, Seattle Prep came to town for a big game. They were too much for the Raiders, and despite a second half rally, we lost 32-12. Ater this setback came three straight con- ference wins. The highlight of the year for players and fans alike was the tremendous 26 to 14 Home- coming victory Everett. By this time winning was commonplace for the Raiders and they didn’t stop. With two easy victories the Raiders extended their win streak to six games and ended the best football season in a quarter of a century. Wednesday and Thursday of Homecoming week were devoted to “Team Day” and “We'd rather fight than switch day . Friday was the big day. Reigning over the day's festivities were Queen Janet Mumma and her court—Barb Wight and Linda Hosley. Following the afternoon pep assembly was the parade through town during which the people of the community shared the electric feeling of the day. Along with the traditional evening activi- ties such as the bonfire were new ones such as a banquet honoring Alumni and a snake dance of B.H.S. students from the school to the Civic Field. Highlighting the eve- ning, of course, was the game against Ev- erett followed by a dance back at the school ending Homecoming 1966. Royalty lm Kosaaks ees eann ares Victory! Plagued by injury and sickness just before several big meets, the Raider trackmen had one of their poorer seasons. Leading the team were juniors Jim Swan and Don Hulme who alternated as num- ber one man on the team. When asked about the highlights of the season, Coach Bob Dorr replied, “There were no_ highlights,’ With’ several sophomores and juniors on this year s team, Coach Dorr looks forward to a bet- ter season next year. This was, unfortunately, the team’s major ac- complishment of the year aside from a few upsets along the way. Plagued by poor shooting and excessive technical fouls, the Raiders won only two: of their first ten games. The second half of the season was a completely different story. Led by second team all-conference forward John Smolik and honorable men- tion forward Hal Arnason, Bellingham won seven out of the final ten making a somewhat respectable 9-11 won-lost rec- ord. Highlighting this half of the season were two upset victories over highly re- garded Lynden and Cascade. This year’s team consisted primarily of seniors, but from time to time four sophomores helped out. They were Dave Diehl, Gary Jorisson, Tom Roehl, and Russ Dorr. These boys and the two juniors on the team will make up next year’s team which we hope will win another city championship. Varsity Basketball-Kneeling: Mark Asmundson, Tim Baker. Basketball team was outmatched in most of its games, but this is understandable since it was composed of one junior and ten sophomores. At various times in the season, four of these boys lent their talents to the varsity and performed admirably. The Freshmen, on the other hand, had an outstanding season. Like the J.V.s they sported lots of talent which should aid the var- sity in coming years. If there is one sport which Bellingham has excelled in over recent years, it is wrestling. This is due to hard work, good coaching, and strict diets. The Raider grapplers handily won their second straight conference championship in a duel match season which saw two Raiders, Rick Plank and Ken Krumdiack, go undefeated. In the tournament season, the team was paced by several outstanding individual performances. The hardworking team sent nine boys to district, seven of them placing. Rick Plank was the only district champion but Clyde Yancy, Ben Cook, and Darrel Coolley all came through with clutch performances to earn second places and berths in the state tourney. Others who placed in district competition were Wayne Lee, 4th; Ken Krumdiack, 3rd; and Jeff Ba glio, 3rd. All this resulted in a second place finish in district and more points at state than ever before, thus ending a most successful season. Wayne Lee assumes familiar wrestling pose. At the time when the school spirit was at a lull, the Winter Sports Festival revitalized the student body. The halls which had previously been bare were soon covered with gay decorations and pep posters put up by the four classes. Queen Darla Melhart (our most experienced queen) reigned over the festivities which saw the Senior Class win the competition. Highlighting the week’s activities was the basketball game against Cascade which BHS surprisingly won 50 to 46. Speedball, volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics were just a few of the many activities carried out in the varied program. The girls demonstrated their abili- ties in these sports at various playdays with other schools. Next year, B Club should be bigger and better since this year’s club was composed entirely of underclass girls. Much credit is due to these girls for their often unnoticed athletic endeavors. Boys ‘Too! Under the direction of Mr. Pitsch four student teams and one faculty team participated in an intramural league. Favored to win the league competi- tion, the Faculty Five easily romped over its first two opponents but had its troubles with the Six Zits as they lost by a considerable margin.
