As time goes by, depreciation occurs and the physical plant shows need of re- pair. The addition of new lighting and new paint finds fragments of life being secured and cemented into the walls, the desks, the very air of the building. Every student who passes through as a freshman and exists as a senior absorbs and adds to the life of C.S.C. Each course you take, every phase of . your college life leaves an indelible mark upon you and the traditions of the school. The Iris staff wishes to dedicate this year’s Iris to the memories that have lin- gered and have become interwoven into the tradition of C.S.C. Waller vs YOU LEFT? WHAT HAVE YOU TAKEN? Shadows... The events of college life soon become mere shadows of memories in the depths of a busy mind. The Iris has at- tempted to recapture, within the limits of printer's ink, the events and activities that created those memories. Each page shadows the essence of education — pegple, work, fun. The Iris binds them together in a synopsis of 1960. Administration Students { - ee ‘peg Oe eR A al AE i ax33- Activities Organizations Advertisements u i Sf ttf ) 0 aly te HAST THE SHADOWS , = 10 SHADOWS OF CENTRAL STATE COLLEGE The theme is intriguing because it might lead one off in several directions. Shadow, however, imply a source of strong light. There are no shadows on a cloudy day. The light of Central State is its instructional program, its faculty, its libra- ry, disseminating knowledge, developing understandings and appreciations, trying to light up the “shadows” in its college area and in the areas to which her graduates go to serve. So when we refer to the extent to which a college has cast its shadow, either in terms of time or place, we really mean the extent to which its light has gone out to dispel shadows in the living, the thinking and the belief of those whom it has touched. In that enterprise each of us ¢an serve to extend the influence of our college, to our credit and to hers. Wm. C. Hansen President William C. Hansen Lyel N. She joined CSC’s facul- ty in 1921, possessing a B.S. degree which she obtained at Kansas State Teachers College in 1917; a Ph. B. degree from the University of Chicago in 1918; and teaching experience obtained from four high schools located in Kansas, Idaho, and Illinois. During the school term of 1924-25, Miss Wilson took a leave of absence, enabling her to do graduate study leading to the M.S. degree she received at Kansas State Peach: ee ers College in 1930. - While at CSC AO Wilson held classes Te nglish. and a z We hope that cies hi 0 many friends and students at CSC and ie ieny visits. © eee The United States is fortunate in that it requires each child to attend school until he is sixteen years of age. Those of you who own this book have chosen to pursue your education towards a higher goal. Perhaps that ambition was encouraged by a faculty mem- ber in your earlier education. When you consider that a por- tion of 180 days per year for sixteen years is spent in a class- room, it would seem logical to assume that many ideas and ambitions had been born of a teacher's guidance. Each of us have respected and admired some faculty mem- ber. Only when many of us take our place in this influential role of teaching will we fully appreciate the faculty. As you turn the following pages, think not of the late hours study- ing or the low grades but what you have learned. The art department offers courses in drawing, color and design, interior deco- ration, art history, art appreciation and various crafts including clay modeling, leather tooling and carving, copper tool- ing and enameling. Outdoor sketching is followed by water color and oil paint- ing. An art minor is offered which includes 20 credits. Norman Keats BS., M.S., Instructor of Art Edna Carlsten B.A.E., Associate Professor of Act Henry Runke B.S., M.S., Assistant Professor of Art BIOLOGY The courses offered in biology are both intensive and extensive in nature. They are designed to meet the needs of students in four general categories: gen- | eral education and liberal arts founda- tions; teacher preparation — both ele- mentary and secondary; pre-professional — college teaching, research biologists i x = and other professional fields; and foun- dations and prerequisite training in tech- ae Al | nical and applied fields. es a Edgar Pierson John W. Adapted from ‘‘What is a Football Player’, by Charles Loftus, Yale University BETWEEN the innocence of boyhood and the dignity of man, we find a sturdy creature called an athlete. Athletes come in assorted weights, heights, jersey colors and num- bers, but all athletes have the same creed; to play every second of every minute to the best of their ability. ATHLETES are found everywhere — teammates rib them, officials penalize them, students cheer them, kid brothers idolize them, coaches criticize them, college girls adore them, alumni tolerate them and mothers worry about them. AN ATHLETE is a composite — he eats like Notre Dame, sleeps like Notre Dame, but, more often than not, plays like Grand Canyon High. To an opponent publicity man, he has the speed of a gazelle, the strength of an ox, the size of an elephant, the cunningness of a fox, the agility of an adagio dancer, the quickness of a cat and TO HIS own coach he has, for press purposes, the stability of mush, the fleetness of a snail, the mentality of a mule, is held together by adhesive tape, bailing wire, sponge rub- ber and has about as much chance of playing on Saturday as would his own grandfather. AN ATHLETE is a wonderful creature — you can criticize him, but you can’t discourage him. You can defeat him, but you can’t make him quit. Might as well admit it — be you alumnus, coach or fan — he is your personal representative, your symbol of fair and hard play. He may not be an All-American, but he is an example of the American way. He is judged, not for his race, not for his religion, not for his social standing or not for his finances, but by the democratic yardstick of his ability. HE IS A HARD working, untiring, determined kid doing the very best he can for his school or college. And when you are feeling upset that your team has lost, he can make you feel mighty ashamed with just two sincerely spoken words — “We tried!’ They cheered us on to victory. vu — — a Ry f ° 2 = 3 jee J ws) i 1S) Nn cq v a a) % a 72) a2 ye — G 0 Ss fol Mw wel vu ”n Vv poet O we v is N { ) | | Coach Counsell Coach Brodhagen ly EDUCATIO Coach Quandt 127 i inski Cluck: an; : skoski; J. P vas ee Se The Oshkosh State Titans put a clamp on CSC’s title hopes as the two teams fought to a 7-7 tie. Perhaps the best game the Pointers played this season was against Milwaukee at Goerke field. The Pointers scored the game’s only points in the final minutes of the first half. With two of our first string players out of the game, due to injuries, the Pointers were under-dogs against the highly rated Warhawks in this year’s Homecoming game. The Pointers bat- tled the Warhawks for three and a half quarters before losing 19-3. The Pointers finished the season when they suffered their third conference de- feat at the hands of a strong Superior team. The final standings found the Pointers in a tie with Milwaukee for fourth place with a record of three wins, three losses and one tie. Get in there and fight! Left to Right — G. Herold; R. The Pointers were chosen as pre-season favorites to win first place honors in the conference by the confer- ence coaches. However, difficulties such as injuries and ineligibilities all combined to hurt the team’s chances, just when they seemed ready to roll. Another disadvantage to the Pointer team was that its home _ games were played in the P. J. Jacobs High School gym — a site where practice sessions were infrequent because of other de- mands on the facilities. Next season, however, CSC will have its own fieldhouse completed and the new surroundings may prove to have a big effect on the cagers’ performance. Fellows, remember this is basketball! Other activities followed such as the Homecoming ban- quet which was held at the Hot Fish Shop. Judy Garot and Pat Otto were the Omeg queen candidates. We could tell Christmas was ap proach- ing! How? Because the Omegs were again busying themselves by working on 170 Christmas projects for their annual Christmas bazaar. The coming of February meant the coming of rushing season which ended with a formal initiation and dinner. May ushered in the last activity, an Omeg-Phi Sig picnic which will always be an unforgotten, fun filled memory on the Omeg calendar.
