Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1987 volume:

I m i Puff the Magic Dragon Lived by the sea And frolicked in the Autumn Mist In a Land called Honolli Little Jacky Paper Loved that Rascal Puff And brought him strings and ceiling wax And other fancy stuff Together they would travel On a boat with billowed sails Jacky kept a lookout perched On Puff ' s gigantic tail Noble Kings and princes Would bow when e ' er they came Pirate ships would low ' r their flags When Puff roared out his name A dragon lives forever But not so little boys Painted wings and giant swings Made way for other toys One gray night it happened Jacky Paper came no more And Puff, that mighty dragon He ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow Green scales fell like rain Puff no longer went to play Along the Cherry Lane Without his life-long friend Puff could not be brave So Puff that mighty dragon Sadly slipped into his cave. P. Yarrow L. Lipton I I ' Within the covers of this scrapbook of memories are the painted wings and giant swings of years past. In a sense, | each and every one of us has within him the child of Jacky Paper who must one day grow beyond the fanciful joys’ of childhood. We must now abandon our past and look ahead to our future goals which no longer seem unattainable. Old dreams must give way to new ones. Our “gray night” has arrived and it is with a pang of sorrow that we say good-bye to all those who have prepared us for this event. The future, beckons us and we must heed its call. And so we extend to you a cordial invitation to travel with us on a “boat with billowed sails” while we reminisce for the very last time as the “Class of 1987” Catch The Spirit Juniors and Seniors Have They Cast A Spell On Us All 10 I Dedication What is dedication? Dedication to an athlete is the first building block to success. Being dedicated to practicing hard every day and to keep up their grades and their homework is a recognizable accomplishment. We are lucky at our school because we have many dedicated athletes, but we have two peo¬ ple who have achieved the highest goals in their sport. Through their dedication and hard work they were able to achieve their goals. We present these next two pages to these outstanding athletes. Sport Editors Rich Horace and Brad Miller 17 Dave Winship Dave has come from a long line of run¬ ners. This is shown through the fact that he went undefeated in the Tri-Valley League throughout the past two years in cross country. This year has to be a dream come true for Dave. He went to New York for the Regional Meet against runners of the same age. Out of over 100 runners he came in first place. This enabled him to qualify for the National Meet in sunny California. Out of 240 competitors Dave finished 38th. This is quite an accomplishment for a junior. Dave’s future goal is to compete in the Boston Marathon. Good Luck Dave! Dave’s running ability has helped make himself “THE BEST HE CAN BE!” Signing off Dick Stockton Tom Heinson 18 Kim has been one of our best female athletes over her past five years at the high school. She has been a key person in all the three sports she played. But in basketball she has shown her best athletic ability. She led the team in scoring the past two years and also led the team in rebounding. Kim’s greatest achievement in basketball was the fact that she became the first female ever to score over a 1000 points. The achievement will be a plateau of unreachable height for a long time to come. Congratulations Kim! PAPELIAN CLINTON MRS. PAPELIAN CHEEVER MS. SENECAL CHRISTIE MRS. FLANAGAN QUIGG MRS. LOWRY PLANTE MRS. GRAY What is the mark of a good teacher? We do not have to look far to answer this question; our high school is blessed with many exceptional teachers who are pillars of their profession. Their dedication and admiration for their students and career have carried us to this day, when the pride in ourselves, our accomplishments, and school shine forth. We must besiege this moment to ask ourselves where we would be without these teachers present here this evening, and those who also, through the years have given of themselves unselfishly and freely to ensure our growth and individual success. Only those students who were too immature to accept responsibility and authority, mistakenly put the blame on the teachers for where they are today and where they are going. Those students who opened their minds and hearts, and honestly gave each teacher a sincere chance discovered a special person, a friend above and beyond a teacher, without whom, they might have not had the courage to achieve their highest potential. Since eighth grade we have taken many immense strides forward, led by many superb teachers, to arrive at this salient day. Many of us have had the same teachers year after year. Each stride these teachers have taken with us merits recognition. It is difficult to put in a few words the gratitude deserved by these teachers; so I ask from each of you at this moment, your rememberance of the teachers who have shared an important period of your life, and who merit your deepest personal admiration and respect, and warmest thanks. Remember: The first teachers who welcomed us to the high school and sheltered us from upperclassmen. The teachers who loved to shoot the breeze with you during free periods. The teachers who believed in you at times when you found it difficult to believe in yourself. The advisor whose unmistakable laughter could be heard ringing down the corridor every morning and brightened your day. The teacher you would always go to see for extra help after school. The teachers who would continue to teach enthusiastically while their students slept with their faces down on their desks. The teachers who disciplined you to work hard. Or maybe the teacher who made you mail him a Pringles chip and drop an egg off the football bleachers. Remember: The teachers who would do their best to do anything for you. The teacher who you always went to for advice. The teachers who endeavored to instill in you the love of learning. The teachers who had patience to put up with all our petty excuses and complaints. The teachers and advisors who encouraged you to be brave and seize all opportunities to find individual success. The teachers who inspired you to continue your education in a particular area of interest. The teachers who wrote you several recommendations which got you into the colleges of your choice. The teacher who could eat his lunch in class while you dissected your fetal pig. The teachers who answered all questions no matter how off the wall. The teacher who could not teach class if the light bulb burned out in his overhead. The teachers who played pranks on their students to make the days a little more tolerable. The teachers who shared your joys and sorrows, achievements and disappointments. Or maybe just the teachers who always made you feel like you were special and belonged. Now it is time to go, and like many, I am finding it hard to leave. The same teachers which overwhelmed us with homework and made us long for graduation, now at this moment of our commencement, are making it difficult for many of us to leave. I would like to say a few last words which I have selected from Luke 7, Verse 38, to you, the teachers who have shared five of the best years of our lives. “Give, and it shall be given to vou. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you.” So it is , that before we leave, I would like to return to every teacher, one significant thing they have given to all of us, their love. NORA WEBBER 11 Geordan Avenue Library Aide I; OEA III. 176 Puff the Magic Dragon Lived by the sea And frolicked in the Autumn Mist In a Land called Honolli Little Jacky Paper Loved that Rascal Puff And brought him strings and ceiling wax And other fancy stuff Together they would travel On a boat with billowed sails Jacky kept a lookout perched On Puff ' s gigantic tail Noble Kings and princes Would bow when e ' er they came Pirate ships would low ' r their flags When Puff roared out his name A dragon lives forever But not so little boys Painted wings and giant swings Made way for other toys One gray night it happened Jacky Paper came no more And Puff, that mighty dragon He ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow Green scales fell like rain Puff no longer went to play Along the Cherry Lane Without his life-long friend Puff could not be brave So Puff that mighty dragon Sadly slipped into his cave.
