I For Still Another Day ■■ • A,- The Bright Lights of the Carnival Will Beckon You Inside. The Carousel, the Ferris Wheel, The Merry Scrambler Ride. All Wait for You to Climb Aboard And Go Your Merry Way. And Leave Behind Your Cares and Woes The Bright Lights of the Carnival Call Out to Each of You. The Space Mobile, the Air Plane Swings, Just to Name a Few. They Promise Joy and Promise Thrills To All Who Dare to Ride. So Come Inside the Carnival, Let All Your Fears Subside. L.R. Papelian 1 Round, and Round, and Round We Go — Moving Fast, Moving Slow. Picking Up Along the Way Knowledge We May Need Some Day. Now We Stop, Now We Start Some Get On, Some Depart. Trying Hard to Reach Our Goal Melding Parts Into a Whole. L.R. Papelian B WOt Like the Seats on the Ferris Wheel, The Painter’s Palette — The Actor’s Stage — The Sculptor’s Clay — The Writer’s Pen — The Chef’s Knife — Are in Themselves Tools of the Trade That, When Set Into Motion, Emerge As the Many Forms We Call The Arts. L.R. Papelian Hill 1 1 From Monday’s Practice to Saturday’s Game — Each Day’s Activities All the Same. Working Hard to Attain Success, Side by Side With All the Rest. Each New Day a Part of the Rest Like the Ferris Wheel’s Gear That Neatly Mesh So That, Once in Motion, They Work As One — From the Very Start, ’Til the Ride Is Done. L.R. A Carnival Consists of Many People and Many Rides. A Play Consists of Many Actors and Numerous Acts. A Game Consists of Many Players and Infinite Plays. An Education Consists of Many Teachers and Multi Courses. When at Last the People and the Parts Unite, And Each Person Performs His Role It’s Then, and Only Then That We Have the Right To Expect Success — to Attain Our Goal. L. R. We learned many new things while moving around and watching others come and go. Fear, anxiety, joy, and togetherness are merely a few of the sensations that we have experienced along the way. We have ridden the Fer¬ ris Wheel together, and now it is time for us to make way for new riders. While it is generally felt that responsibility is taught by allowing or requiring students to make their own decisions the Department is allowing students to have a choice of electives as in the past but not as freely. Certain courses were introduced to the English Program as either high level or low level courses. At the onset, we felt that students in each category would make prudent selections inas¬ much as each student knows himself or herself better than any¬ one else. We did find that selections of the ' ' easier courses” were being selected by top students while the difficult courses w r ere often being selected by students who do not belong there. As a result, we have set up a program whereby students are required to take certain courses each year based upon the course of study they have chosen; College, General, or Business. In most instances, students have a choice of required courses and then they also have the option of several elective courses for the par¬ ticular program they have selected. These things have been accomplished thus far and we look to require more courses in particular for programs that are not quite so structured at this time, i.e.. Business and General Courses for the senior year. I guess that we can sum up our accomplishments and our goals for improvement by saying that we want to allow reasonable free¬ dom with logical direction. We feel that it is time to demand cer¬ tain accountability again. 97 I John Cleary lin lish 8, Pnglish 9, Basic Composition, Intnxluction to Satire, Twentieth Century American Literature lit I Vento Publish H, Public Speaking, Writing Workshop Business Pnj ' - John Thuot Department Head Basic (iomposition, Intnxluction to Poetry, Public Speak¬ ing Maureen Trudcl Publish 8, Poetry and Plays, Novels Lorraine Kilburn Pnglish 9, Twentieth Century American Lit¬ erature, liarly Pnglish Literature, Twentieth Century Publish Literature Janet Langcnburg Intnxluction to Business Pnglish, lish, Science Fiction Foreign Paul Cournoyer Conversational French I, French II, Spanish I, F.nglish 9 Denise Keating German I, II, III, and IV, Spanish I, II Velmo Ciavarini Italian I, II, III and IV, Business Management, Intrtxluction to Busi¬ ness FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The Foreign Language Department offers five languages to the students of Bellingham High School, grades 8 through 12: French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Latin. In addition to the traditional classes, we also offer conversational classes in French and Spanish. There are a total of 497 students enrolled in lan¬ guage classes, which is 37% of our enrollment. This is much higher than the national average, which is only 13%. With the recent emphasis in the study of foreign languages, it is encourag¬ ing that so many of our students are learning languages and about foreign nations and cultures. We also have five foreign language clubs, all of which are- active in offering extra-curricular activities and cultural aware¬ ness. The club members attend restaurants to sample the foods indigent to the foreign lands they study. The members are also planning a language festival to be held in the spring in conjunc¬ tion with a foreign language week when each of the languages will be highlighted for a day throughout the school. Among many virtues, one, perseverance, is important when it comes to champions. Track star Ralph Moore has many virtues — desire, courage, motivation — but perseverance is the forerunner of them all. He displayed this attribute, astounding everyone present, when he particip ated in the Mass. State Championship Conference in Northfield. Ralph Moore, a total unknown, had control of the meet right from the start; he set the pace for other entrants and held the lead for M of the race — running as hard as he possibly could. As luck would have it, his body said no more” the finish line was in sight! Exhaus¬ tion was written blandly in his face but he mustered every ounce of strength availa¬ ble, crossed that finish line — and collapsed! Ralph was the only entrant from this area to run in the U.S. Cross Country Champion¬ ship in Raleigh, N.C. Running the 5 kilome¬ ter, challenging course in 16 minutes 20 sec¬ onds, he placed eleventh out of 250 to 300 runners — Perseverance wins again! Bellingham’s varsity hockey team completed its season by finishing in second place in the tri-valley league. This qualified the team for E. Mass, tourney play. The hawks played Dorchester high in the pre¬ liminary round and won 8-4. In the first round of the tournament Bellingham defeated Harwich High School 4-1. This victory enabled the hawks to qual¬ ify for quarterfinal play in the Boston Garden. For Bellingham this meant the first time an athletic team played in the Garden since the basketball team in 1963. The season was an enjoyable experience for all team members. Among the many stars Jeff Stearns and Larry Pontremoli, co-capts., displayed the lead¬ ership so necessary on any successful team. Other seniors who played leading roles in Bellingham’s 15- 7-1 record include Steve Gentile, Gerry Morgan, Dan Mayhew, and Ricky Armstrong. 119 Back Row: John McColgan, Donny Daniels, Mike Morrison, Jimmy Newman, Steven Gentile, Pat Morrison. Brain has had the distinction of showcasing his skills on the basketball court by becom¬ ing only the fourth person in the school’s history to attain a total point score of over 1000. When asked about people who helped him along the way, Brain said all his coaches played an important part in his career but it was Mr. Canestrari who straightened me out” way back in eighth grade intramurals. Brain loves all sports, and plays street basketball every chance he gets when he’s not on the high school court. But it was that fateful Friday, February 8, 1980 that Brain will never forget. It was the last few minutes in a league game against Ashland High. He still needed two points to hit the 1000 mark and make his mark in the annals of Bellingham Court History. During the third period he missed a few easy free throws as the crowd in the stands roared. Coach Bonollo benched him for a minute or two — finally back in action, charging down the court, Brian stuffed the ball and gained his goal — one thousand points — putting him in the ranks with previous high scorers: Glen Gariepy, Jim Bonollo, and Bob McDaniels, thus completing the first step on his journey of a thousand miles.
