Mixing business with pleasure I was preparing for my first trip to Mars to visit some of ray former classmates whom I had not seen since graduation in 1952. How different the world was now and some of my classmates had much to do with making it different. Barbara Chliszczvk had started it all by fathoming a way to stay young longer. We could now live to the ripe old age of 175 years. f- ronliecii Space cadets, robots, and even trips to Mars were realized. Make believe had come truei Why? I arrived at the airport and immediately set out to seek what other people thought about this change in the world and whom should I see roaming around but those two girls who were noted for always loitering in the hallway at school during study periods. You all remember Katy Betsch and Chris Glowka. Katy was now a Physical Ed Instructor at Blackstone High, of all places, and Chris who has a flair for designing, was an interior decorator. I said hello to them and hey informed me that they had just returned from Mars and had seen M 0 © Ledoux. Moe was thinking of opening a drug store and was still there attempting to procure a permit. As I strolled liesurly on my merry way I was startled to hear a sharp commanding voice giving orders to a group of mechanics who looked ’’scared to death”. They just oouldn’t seem t o finish their work quickly enough to satisfy ”the big boss”. You’ll never guess who it was. It was that Normand Sixain who had always been so quiet and who was now chief mechanic at the airport. I then decided to board the rocket and was ready to ascend the steps when a figure darted in front of me, kno cking ma down. Suddenly she stopped and retraced her steps and stopped directly in front of me. I was just about to tell this ill-mannered girl what I thought of her when she said ”I’m Claire Fleuette. Re¬ member me?” No one would ever have believed that this was Claire Fleuette. Figuratively speaking, she had changed a great deal. She was Henry Patrick’s private secretary and was rushing to de¬ liver some papers for him to Bruce Carroll. Henry was presidert of his own firm and had just taken Bruce on as a Junior partner. Well I finally did get into the rocket and Pauline Allain was there to take me to my seat and instructed me on how to prevent getting a severe jolt when we penetrated tie atmosphere. She said she enjoyed her work as hostess and had been trained in a school established by Billy Cowen. Billy was a shrewd busi¬ nessman and was planning to open such a school on Mars. Pauline Inquired as to whether or not I had seen any of the other kids with whom we had graduated and I told her that Connie Casavant was married but was combining a singing career with marriage and was very successful. • Pauline Landry was also married and had three children but was still the jolly Pauline we had known in High School days. Katv had passed along the information that Andy Gregoire was now coaching basketball at Bellingham High and his teams had won 3 state championships in a row. The pilot entered the rocket and we knew that at long last we were read i to take off on the most adventurous trip we had ever taken. I fastened my safety belt and settled back wonder¬ ing what this excursion into space would be like. My thought’s were interrupted by a man’s voice asking if he could share my seat. I looked up and there standing beside me was Carl Adams. He was going to study plant life on Mars for a government re¬ search laboratory. He certainly had come a long way since starting his career as a farmer. Ag we zoomed through space we chatted about our wonderful days at B.H.S. Neither of us had believed these amazing things could happen to the world but were very pleased that they had. We soon saw a bright glow and knew we were approaching Mars and would soon penetrate the atmosphere. We followed Pauline’s directions and received only a slight jolt when we did break through. Before we left the rocket we were given a special pair of walking shoes. These shoes were to keep us from traveling a distance of approximately 20 feet with each step. I couldn’t help thinking that Charlie Pantano would have enjoyed traversing that distance in only one stride the first year he ran in the Marathon. Charlie had successfully competed in the Marathon and was now training prospective champion runners when he was not busy at his job as head of a painting firm. I alighted from the rocket and was seeking scmecne who could tell me how to reach my hotel when I spied a handsome space patrolman who resembled Leo Lataille. I never drea led it was actually Leo. He had requested duty on Mars because he was seeking excitement and here he was giving directions to lost people. There was one thing that I was especially interested in learning about and that was the trend in style in clothes on this planet so I stepped into a fashion salon. I asked to sp eak to the manager and found that she was our own Jackie Trudeau. Jackie had done a wonderful job as Business Manager of our Year book. She told me Pat Powers had joined their staff as a fashion stylist and was doing remarkably well designing clothes appropriate to the Martian climate. Another bit of information Jackie volunteered was that Pauline Young was the leadincr fashion model on Mars. Of all my classmates Albert was the only one who wasn’t sat¬ isfied with the world as it now was. He was going to give Barbara Chliszczyk a piece of his mind when he saw her for she was to blame for the lag in his business, Albert was an undertaker and pfople were taking too long to die in this day and age. I listened to him drone on about his financial distress all the way back to Earth. He was one person who certainly deserved his title as the most talkative-boy in the Senior Class. That night as I was once again settled in my home my thoughts were of all these wonderful people with whom I had spent so many happy ears. And then it happened. The old familiar voice of Barbara Godin, ntvan elementary school teacher, saying, It ' s time to get up. Oh well, I suopose all dreams have to end sometime Anita Petrosky As I stand here with my classmates about me, I am a bit bewildered, I find it hard to believe that we are gathered together for the last time before bringing to a close tomor¬ row those four glorious years at Bellingham High School. As 1 look into my classmates faces, each with its own expres¬ sions, yet each alike in its own sad way, I wonder what mys¬ terious thoughts cai be hidden behind them. What can they be thinking of? Can their thoughts be traveling, as mine are, to that day when we first entered this school and to all the wonderful things that happened during our years to¬ gether? Are their hearts choked, as mine is, at the joy of recalling those unforgetable memories which all began with that bright and happy September morning in 1948 when we en¬ tered this school as Freshmen? Although we had been in the High School as seventh and eighth grade members, still it seemed strange to be High School Freshmen. But soon the friendliness of the upper¬ classmen made us feel welcome and proud to be members of Bellingham High School Our first year was really a hectic one and with Mr, r lynn as our Class Advisor, our first class meeting was held to elect the following officers: Patricia Powers, president; Margaret Shelton, vice-president; Walter Pichie, secretary; and nita r etrosky, treasurer. Looking pretty foolish dres¬ sed in strange costumes and acting as slaves to our superior Seniors on Initiation Day. W e were amply rewarded that eve¬ ning with an Acquaintance Dance. They certainly did their utmost to make us feel at home. As the year went on, basketball brought Andy C re g 0 i re on the team and auline Allain and Anita Petrosky as Cheer¬ leaders. In February came our first social event, the Val¬ entine ance. With the hall aH decorated with red and white hearts and streamers, there was loads of fun for everyone but more than that it meant our first taste of social suc¬ cess. Final Exams and the class outing to H an tasket brought us to the end of our first year together at B. H a nd soon we found ourselves being greeted as Sophomores. Although this year was not an easy one, as for studies, we stiU managed to find time f cr fun and activities. Our class officers were: Margaret helton, president; Henry Patrick, vice-president; Barbara Chliszczyk, ’secretary; and Jaapeline Trudeau, treasurer. 4 ' J Our first social ©vent of th© year was the Thanksgiving Dane© and Turkey Raffle It was not only successful as a social affair, as we danced to the music of Tiger Brown’s Orchestra, but it was also a great financial success, for we had found that w© had to work pretty hard if we ever wanted to go to Washington In March w© held our class banquet which certainly was an event to remember (even if it was pretty hard to ©at our own cooking). Our class trip came again too quickly, but not before we had ordered our class rings. And so our unforget- able Sophomore vear passed with Mr. Time and before we knew it we were Juniors This was a big year for us, for we were now upperclass¬ men, something we had been looking forward to for a long time. We elected as our class officers Charles Pantano, president; Albert Forte,, vice-president; Barbara Chliszczyk secretary; and Anita Petrosky, treasurer. When our class rings came w© could not seem to get them on our fingers fast enough so we could show them to the other classes. That year our social activities commenced in October with the Hal]oween Dance. Although it was a gay and festive affair with corn stalks and pumpkins, bright-colored shirts, and old-fashioned square dancing to the music of Jimmy Savo- ni’s Orchestra, there was sadness In the hearts of all the Juniors for it was farewell dance to one of our fellow classmates, Margaret Shelton. Again came basketball. This time we had an addition to make. Two new cheerleaders from our class, Christine Glowka and Barbara Chliszczyk, would help to cheer our team to vic¬ tory. After basketball was over we were kept busy planning our Junior Prom. Soon April 6 rolled around. With Star¬ dust” as our theme, our dreams seemed to be fulfilled as we danced to the dreamy music of Gene King’s Orchestra in a gar¬ den of roses and stars. Katherine Betsch and Albert Forte reigned as King and Queen as one of our most treasured eve¬ nings came to an end and is now but a memory. Our Junior year went along pretty smoothly except for the class squables for which we were famous. Again came exams and our t rip to Nantasket climaxed our third step on the ladder to success. We could hardly wait to become Seniors. At last the long-awaited day arrived. Yes, we were now Seniors and we were glad to hear that Miss Bailey would be our new Class Advisor. Not losing sight of studies, we were well aware that this would be a busy year. Our main objective - Washington. As we settled down to business, our first class meeting was held to elect the officers that would guide us through our final vear. The results showed that capable Charles Pantano would be our president; with William Cowen as vice-president; Barbara Chliszczyk, secretary and Katherine Betsch, treasurer. Patricia Powers axi Albert Forte were elected chairmen of activities. To start the year off with a bang we held a Freshman Acquaintance Dance and in November, a Harvest Bazaar and sup¬ per. Then came our Christmas Ball, Whit© Christmas . As w© danced in a hall of green and white, we were very proud of our Queen, Constance Casavant. In February, much to ourdismay, Charles Pantano resigned as president of our class. guess it was too much for him. n enry Patrick was elected to take his place and he certainly did a wonderful job. during ent we sponsored a series of whiat parties and a musical entitled n Showboat n and for the ilrst time came the realization that our treasury would iust about make it. But iss ailey spurred us on and soon our York d Washington 6 Wer@ r6ady to leave for New On the morning of April 12 we boarded tte bus for Provi¬ dence, and then the train to New York. Oh, what a glorious feeling it was when we arrived there! All those buildings and people! Some difference from Eellingham! There was so much to do. In New ork we visited Radio Citv Music Hall, took a yatch trip around Manhattan Island, toured the RCA Building, saw the Empire State Building, and even were a part cftte Easter Parade. Then we left for Washington. There were so many government buildings and historical monuments to see that it is hard to remember them all. Will we ever forget how beautiful the cherry blossoms looked in full bloom? As we turned homev ard, after visiting Annapolis, we realized that now our one great dream had been realized and that four years cf hard work and planning was behind us and but a memory. The following week we finished our yearbook under the capable direction of Pauline Alland aid therest of her staff, aid it was finally sent to the publisher. Now, with about only two more months to spend together, we sponsored a play entitled Tons of Fun which wsb directed by Mr. Collins. As baseball season rolled around for the last time, Andre Gregoire and Albert Forte were again on the team showing Just what members of our Senior Class could do. Now with our High School career but a memory and our last eocams st B. H. S. over, Commencement week has crept unon us, with its outings, our Class Banquet, tonight-our Class Night, tomorrow-Commencement, and finally our Commencement Ball. We are about to bid farewell to our classmates, our friends, our teachers, and most of all tS our school which to us has been our home for so long. We can not help but feel this sadness in our hearts along with the feeling of victory and joy as we receive our diplomas and walk out into the world, each in our own way, not knowing what is to face us or our classmates.
