The student news- paper publishes about 500 stories and photographs per year. Scott Lowrey was vot- ed the staff ' s best writer. Skip McDowell is the advi- sor. ihl 64 Annua The Annual Staff publishes more than 2,700 photographs in its yearly memory- book. With a group of 25 artists, photogra- phers and writers, the staff puts in a con- bined 4,483 ' 2 hours each year to produce 200 pages of end-of-the-year tears, joys, heartbreak and love. 65 66 Language Language includes Foreign Language, Reading and English Departments, in Foreign Language the student learns to communicate with people who speak a language other than his own. The pri- mary goal of the Reading Department is to improve the comprehension, voca- bulary and study skills of the student. The English Department attempts to place students in courses which are appro- priate to their scholastic aptitude. For the college bound students, the depart- ment has prepared a program which should enable them to succeed in col- lege courses. Socia Science Emphasis was placed on making the students aware of government and the world around them. Seniors were urged to get involved in campaigning by the members of local government, while it taught them to be citi- zens in a democratic republic. V i Business The Business Department prepares students for careers in the business world. Students can take courses such as Typing, Shorthand, Accounting, Office Machines and Procedures, Model Office and Business English and others necessary to work as clerk-typists, book- keepers, and stenographers. Typing courses are also taken for personal use. 67 The major goal of the department is to provide a math curri- culum which will meet the needs of the students aiming for various careers in the technical fields as well as the college bound student interested in the social sciences, economics, biological and physical sciences. Students can utilize new technical equipment and multi-media materials in the lab- oratory resource center. 68 Science Different classes provided opportunities for students to learn inside and out- side the classroom. The Science De- partment tries to make the student aware of the natural processes and man ' s relation to the total environment. 69 .- « ' ■Consumer Ed. The major goal of the Consumer Education Department is to inform students regarding products, laws, and regulations and their rights, to enable them to deal more effectively in the marketplace. The teaching concept covers four areas dealing with industrial arts, household chemistry, career planning and legal rights of the consumer. The program has just completed its fifth year. 70 i •I ' t Scholar of the Year With 230 high school credits of all A ' s, Scott Low- rey was unanimously selected as Bellflower ' s 1978 Scholar of the Year. Lowrey ' s credits, moreover, were not restricted to just high school. He has also taken Calculus I and II at Cerritos College and earned A ' s there, too. Activities and other in- terests were not neglected, however. While cur- rently serving as CSF President, Lowrey has also participated in Math and International clubs. But most of his extra time has been spent as Editor of the Blade, one of southern California ' s most heralded high school newspapers. He ' s a fine leader and person, said Blade Advisor Skip Mc- Dowell. He has continually provided that spark the staff needs. Features are his specialty, but writing stories on athletic events weren ' t difficult for Lowrey either — he himself is quite aware of the athlete ' s inner most struggles to get in shape, to perform well at the right time and to train, as Lowrey is Cross-country ' s MVP long-distance runner as well as the No. 1 distance man in track. But I have concentrated mainly on math and science, says Scott. Although I haven ' t neglected liberal arts, I ' ve tried to prepare my- self for a career in engineering. I ' d like to attend Caltech or UCI. His 4.00, his ability to communi- cate (in Spanish, too!) and his numerous awards in math contests appear to qualify him to attend his choice— but also to do well there, too. I really enjoy math— even classroom work — it is almost recreational for me. Performing Arts This year under the direction of the new drama coach D ' liese Melendrez, the BHS theatrical department flourished. The noontime Brown Bag Theatre made the department financially sound, and its pre- sentations of Don ' t Drink the Water and Once Upon a Mattress displayed new talents. ( Hi 72 Directed by Tom Dustman, Ensemble, Girls Glee, Mixed Chorus, Choir and the first-year Angels entertained BHS this year. Pizza sales, varied concerts and the upcoming tour in Europe top the Choral department ' s list of accomplishments. The combined talent s have performed over 500 songs for the community and students. 73 The marching band began the year connpeting in various parades. The band won the Mayor ' s trophy at the Bellflower Liberty Day parade in November and a second place at the Ocean- side Christmas parade. Highlighting the year was a three-day tour to San Diego and Arizona in May. The band raised its funds primarily through the selling of hats, t-shirts, raffle tickets and coupon books. rf r - ' M ' . :?ll % ' ■-.. The performers also enter- tained at the Girls League fashion show. 75 Musica Bellflower combined the talents from the Drama, Music, Art and Home Ec departments to produce one of the school ' s finest musicals, Once Upon A Mattress. This adapted musical- comedy from the fairytale The Princess and the Pea shot Carol Burnett to star- dom on Broadway. The second annual production lasted five consecutive nights (beyond the months of time and practice involved). The faculty and stu- dents involved vi ' ould like to see the all- school musical become a BHS tradition. 76 Special Education Special Education classes are designed to teach practical skills, to make the students become independent and self-sufficient, and to feel confident. 77 Home Ec. The Home Economics Department offers cour ses ranging from under- standing young children, their care, growth and development, to nutri- tion and preparing a meal for every occasion. Training the student to be a wise consumer in buying food and clothing is also included. 78 Art The Art Department, through a widely diversi- fied curriculum, exposes many students to the world of creativity with classes such as Com- mercial Art, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting and Design Workshop. 79 Industrial Arts The shop courses have always stressed vocational training. Again this year Bellflower ' s Kiwanis Club presented incen- tive awards, recognizing those students who excelled and en- couraging others to continue perfecting their skills in all areas of industrial arts. nV ' ' . jddBk 80 fpp r •ft ' il FV Hi , r J H MM 1 f di V vg HH — iif L ik d Mil - ,1 E,k 1 r ! Varsity Volleyball The 1977 varsity volleyball team was a team of firsts. One first, the spikers started the season with no starters returning. An- other first was the purchase of new uniforms, the first ones since 1971 when Bellflower be- gan competing in volleyball. Be- cause of a third place finish in league, the team made BHS his- tory by being the first volleyball team not to go to CIF. But one highlight of the season was the All-League selection of setter Cathy Moore. Top row, from left to right: Judy Hendrickson, Vic ky Wilson, Deb- bie Wooldridge, Patti Borloy. Most valuable honors were claimed by sophomore Joni Jones. JV 2 Volleyball The frosh-soph (better known to the players as JV 2) team was created because of the response of over 80 girls trying out for volleyball. The team made up of mostly freshman, sophomores and some juniors played only when other schools had a frosh-soph team, ending the season in third place. 148 4fc Cross Country suffers sub-par season The 1977 season was a tough one for the cross coun- try teams because of the upping of the boys ' race from two to three miles. The varsity team finished league with a 3-4 record and no qualifiers for GIF. One consolation of the season was the return of coach Roy Swett after a year ' s absence. Scott Lowrey took varsity most valuable and Eric Nelsen was given the Bob O ' Brien Award. The frosh-soph team ' s sea- son was comparable to the varsity, and no runner qualified for further competition. On the girls level, however, Robin Henderson qualified for GIF pre- lims. This year, the JV team played opposite where the varsity played. In past years both teams trav- eled together. This made it necessary to have a separate coach, Carol Bigham, a CSULB varsity tennis team member, came to be with the JV ' s. In league, the team repeated the 13-1 record made by the previous JV team and also took the league championship. Most valuable player went to freshman Shanna Moore. Meeting those publishing deadlines are tough. To say a few words about our theme, it was the toughest decision that the staff had to make. Second, in choosing a theme one has to have a topic that students ranging from athletics to music to math to English could associate with. Words then must make it fit together. We feel that Stars gave us that universal effect we were looking for. We ' d like to thank the whole staff for such a super job. To point out a few that haven ' t been men- tioned: Teri Benson, Tina Henry, Doreen Niday and Susan Johnson for good jobs in their sections. Much gratitude to advisor Skip McDowell, who didn ' t realize he was going to be sent on mission im- possible until the first week of school, and to Don Moore for his valuable time and efforts. Special thanks to our photographers, especially Karl Ramm and Keith DeBoom, for all of our fabulous color (which they did themselves) and to David Brown and Ron Melles for special effects. And to Mark Avery we extend a special thank you for his efforts and leadership, and for his contributions in art and photography. He was our MVP. Many thanks should also be extended to Tom Obbema, David Bybee, David Palmer, Joni Cummins, Jeff Alario and Jim Vilain for photos. Co-editor Co-editor .c 6I© -J UMi)c£i01 d-UT a P.S.
