Pcarys' exploration of the North Pole? No—-it's Kctchums' senior squad out on the frosty fields of Caruthcrs Park, practic- ing manuevers for the 1972-73 powderpuff football game. Worry' proved needless the night of the game. Head coach Dave Ketchum perceptively brought his umbrella, prepared for nature's tears of pity for the juniors. There were no stars in the sky, they were on the field. Dis- guised in white jerseys, they shone so brightly the opposistion seemed blinded. With nary a pass, the seniors darted to a dazzling 30-0 victory. Diane Schenk and Allyson Anthony; aided by Peggy Traxcls' magnet hands snatching interceptions, a defense comparable to a rushing block wall holding the junior offense to one first down in the entire game and nothing on the scoreboard, and an unbelievably excellent offensive line; scored the double digits that made history. With their second shut-out, the '72- '73Senior Squad went on record as the only team since the birth of powder- puff football at Bellflower High to achieve championship twice in a row. HOMECOMIN C 72: TWENTY YEARS OF SPIRIT Homecoming '72 was beseiged by wet weather but nothing could dampen the spirit of the Buccaneers. The week was filled with traditional activities--a pie eating contest, a pizza iioot, an assembly introducing the royal court, and a cavalcade of reminiscences, headed by Jerry Quarry, parading to the theme of Those Were The Days . The days were filled with the spirit of giving, fun, and competition--and of sadness and respect at the tragic death of a fellow. These pages, as was Homecoming '72, are dedicated to the memory of sophomore Vince Bennett. 19 Princess Cheryl White Princess Cheryl Sistrunk Princess Shirley Judy HOMECOMING 1972 Princess Linda Pederson MOONLIGHT AND MISTLETOE SINGING VALENTINES Singing Valentines were a great success once again this year. As Cupid shot his arrow in the form of song, students and faculty alike were delighted by the many red faces and shy smiles of those receiving that secret message of love. W. 5. F. Winter Sports Festival Week started off with a finger-chilling ice cream eating contest and a head-smashing activities night. Following an arm-wrestling tournament, the Princesses unleashed their colorful creativity on their somewhat lcary escorts in an entertaining body painting contest. The seven Princesses were formally introduced in an assembly featur- ing the feathered furies in a class pillow fight. The climax of the week suitably came during the halftime of a victorious basketball game with Warren when Karen Kane was crowned the Winter Sports Festival Queen of 1973 King Ugly-man Tim Rush King Crazy-legs Nick Cirlincione Prince Ugly-man Bill Arsi 26 27 B.H.S. CARNIVAL Whipping through colored lights, stomach-lurching rides and screeching pipeorgan music, one windy March weekend brought Bellflower a wet and wild Carnival. Spir- its were definitely not dampened as crowds shoved their way to club- sponsored booths (hoping to exchange a handful of coins for a goldfish with a slight ping pong ball concussion or a some- what bedraggled teddy- bear). The proceeds from this first time event materialize I. C. C. 's dream in im- proving the audio system in the gym. 30 SADIE HAWKINS Dressed in flowery Polynesian attire, Sadie Hawkins hid be- hind pineapples and grass skirts, gathering young hearts and sending them to her favor- ite conspirator - Marrying Sam. ROMANCE AND ROSES This year's prom was held on May 25th at the beautiful Century Plaza Hotel in Century City. The setting for the evening of Romance and Roses was held in the Santa Monica Room, where Breast of Capon was served on rose adorned tables. After- dinner, the night unfolded to the sounds of Steeplejack in which couples rocked until 1:00 A. M. 32 GRADUATION As fune fulfills hopes of San Francisco and summer vacation, a small twinge of re- morse brings back memories of friend- ships, struggles and dreams, and four years that have slipped away forever. SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR JIM MODLIN Involvement has been the story for this year’s scholar of the year, Jim Modi in. He has been a member of such clubs and organizations as Spanish Honor Society, Chemistry Club, Physics Club, Blade Staff, Key Club, Interact Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and C.S. F. Jim has played Bee basketball as a freshman, J.V. as a sophomore and junior, and varsity as a senior. As a senior Jim is serving as president of our chapter of C.S. F. as well as president of Physics Club. He is also an active member of the B. H. S. Math Team. Jim has maintained a 4.00 grade point average throughout his four high school years. Last year's results prove this. Our team was first place in league with an 8-0 record. Going on to the GIF semi-finals they placed second out of twenty- two teams. At the finals the team didn't fair as well, placing seventh out of eight teams. This year's varsity consists of such fine players as; No. 1 golfer E. Walker, (2) A. Rodriquez, (3) F. It’s still a summer's breach from football, but it's already certain that when we confront Excelsior and Lynwood again. Coach Odell's army will draw first blood. --Special commendations: To sub qb Don Kerr who played masterfully under the shadow of Dan Cas- tillo. To Phil Rogers, perhaps the best tennis player in BHS history. Undefeated in the SGVL for the past two years as a varsity player, Phil was one of the ingredients in BHS' unnoticed domination of the league’s tennis scene. 144 I.V I IFINF ARTS Cathy Baker and Karen Hale This fall's production of the play This Little Hand not only was a smash among its stage hands and crew, but also among the student body as well. While most plays in the past have given parts for members of both sexes, the Who-done-it plot featured a cast of ten female flurries hanging in social status from a mad murderess to coed aristocrats. Although it was clear to the viewer from the beginning as to who was the killer, the suspense builds up as the players become endangered of being cold corpses in a dark closet. The first night of the play was a benefit per- formance to aid the Annual's funds. The Annual staff would like to thank the Drama de- 146 partment for their gen- erous help. CHRISTMAS CONCERT Girls Glee This years Christmas concert was the combined effort of the Choral Dept, and the Concert Band. Debbie Smith Mike Smith Peter Myers Rick Wilson Kathey Manus Karen Hale Nash Contreras Karen Raymond Sandra Jinkins Debbie Henderson This year's all-school play was a production re- volving around love, money and a shifty-eyed Sam. Trying to create a who-done-it Southern embel- lished mellerdraymer, the characters consisted of a wealthy widow, portrayed by Debbie Smith; her son, Malvern Larkfield (Rick Wilson) whose mother intends to wed him to the not-so-pure but most certainly prissy Nella Hargrave (Karen Hale). As in any true love heart affairs, the son really loves someone else. Karen Raymond, who tried to portray this as best as she could played the role of Felicity Fair, as Mrs. Larkfield's nurse. 150 ALL SCHOOL PLAY Because money was the word of the night, there appeared a money- hungry leech, Nash Contreras, playing the part of the Larkfields' lawyer. While chaos was clearly evident on stage, one member of the set seemed to be quite able of taking care of everybody and everything. So, in the style so typical of the family butler, Peter Myers once again steals the show, and becomes hero for the night. 151 IN RECOGNITION FOR This year Bonita Kato became well-known around campus for her literary contributions to the Blade and the beauty in which she complemented the Winter Sports Festival Royal Court. Like the pianos, sheet music, and treble clefs, Barbara Enochs and Denise Plant have seemed to be indispensible assets to the BHS Vocal Music department. With schedules that read like music class rosters, they were members of Girls Glee, Mixed Chorus, Triple Trio, Choir, Ensemble (Cumulation), and teachers' aides (with and without credit) for Mrs. Baker. They combined their voices in duets for Christ- mas concerts, helped to choreograph numbers for Triple Trio and Chamber Singers, and finally built the Choir float for the Homecoming Moreover, she handled the finances for Singing Valentines, renovated the music library, managed the choral robes, kept a scrapbook to preserve the departments' activities for history, gave transportation aid, beautified the bulletin boards, and generally contributed a MOUNTAIN of volunteer work that boosted the enthusiasm and interest of the A 152 In his role as Senior Drum major David Traut has been the figure of authority and nobleness be- fitting the Bellflower High School Buccaneer Band. Besides his leadership qualities he has contributed his musical talents to help make the tuneful band great, playing the tuba in the Concert Band and the trombone in the Stage Band. His instrumental skills have also been put to good use, performing in a local Youth Band. Jeanne Farquhar began her imaginative and dependable career in Drama in 1971. She appeared as a walk-on in the production of Up The Down Staircase, and then took a role on the other side of the lights as Stage Director for Dramarama 1971 and 1972. With a year of stagecraft she be- came technical director and lighting designer for such major productions as A Midsummer Nights Dream and Wall to Wall War . She devoted her time to Christmas shows, choir performances, etc., as a service to the school. She is now active at Cerritos College and in the Long Beach Civic Light Opera. Peggy Buffington lives in a world of her own, a cross between the worlds of visual and soundable art. She was a member of the Band Council, Art classes, and the Annual Staff. Creating the Art calendar in 1972, and president of the Art Club, Peggy per- formed in all the functions and concerts of the band and orchestra. She has exhibited for the California Association of Arts in 1973, - the Cerritos Shows, and the Student Art shows at school, as well as winning a Project Read Contest award. She received the Bank of America award for the BHS 1973 Art Department. She plans to attend Cerritos College and the California State University at Long Beach aspiring for a career in teaching art and music. 153 t H_C.. — U -LU, oJxjL 71jLGXs h Lt 0 l - n ' cc yi , - JjlOL- , 2 ?26 C S 9- S ) ) l xeC c l _ CIA'O'y'T Csl 2 ? u £ d-lML (tJC - ■ r - 7 1 UNDERCLASSES JUNIORS OF 74' Mrs. Shahin-Junior Advisor Junior Officers: President-Karen Ferre, Vice Pres.-Matt Bonazzola, Secrctary-Luann Frursho, Sec. of Publicity-Terri Roberts, Sec. of Activities-Marilyn Smith, Court Preceptors-Frances Contreras and Mary Morrison, (NOT PICTURED) Sgt. of Arms-Jamie Schramm. 156 Jim Adam Tim Adam Jackie Allen Karen Aule Mark Alyca Nila Anderson Crina Anthony Marc i lie Aoki Mike Aparicio Anna Apondaca Mike Aranda Kathy Arrellanes U'aynette Asbury Tom Babich Danny Bailey Sheryl Baird Tim Brirendinc Karen Broslous Arbie Brown Donna Bryan Julie Bubar Bob Budihas Darryl Burlridge Tim Burke Sharlene Butter Mark Butcher Robert Bynfi Karen Caldwell Cary Cameron Candi Campbell Chuck Caquelia Cheric Carlisle ONE MORE YEAR TO SURVIVE Debra Barbour Chrit Bartel Melvin Baty Anita Bcasly Roy Beck Carla Bell Robert Bell Sherry Berkoivit7 Bille Billings Martin Blais Mat Bonarrola Steve Bragg Alicia Carpcnas Rote Carr Chris Carter Janis Carter Vicki Case Ron Chesley Penny Christiansen Mark Chulich Bette Clark Jack Clausen Victor Coamonita Vince Colamonico Steve Coleman John Conner Frances Contreras Nash Contreras Sarah Contreras Faron Cook James Cooper Ken Cooper 157 ONE MORE TEACHER TO BEAR Randy Counterman Larry Cox Vanessa Cox Roger Crockett Carolyn Crouch Ricky Cuevas Jan Curtis Rick Outright Celesta Dabbs Donald Dalphin Julie Daly Brenda Davis Denise Davis John Davis Jeri DeBoer Anna DeGraaf Pat Devine Joni DeVries Mike Dewitt Marla Diendorf Janet Digiacinto Paul DiGiulo Al Dimick Kim Disharoon David Dishman Jcanine Dofner Patti Dokter Clayton Doyle Debbie Doyle Michelle Dyer Pamela Earnest Duane Eiter Terri Emerson Jeanne F.nkhorn Jill Evans Walter Fabian Ed Farnum Sheryl Feldspouch Jo Fenn Suzanne Fcrnish Karen Ferre Mark Fisher Jodi Fisher Scott Fowler Steve Fowler Kim Fox Ron Freier Judy Fuller Luann Furusho Robert Galecncr Grace Galindo Patti Gallcgo Terry Garret John Gilbcrth Robin Gillette Armando Gonzales Dave Go'''”''' ’ 158 Carol Goodro Craig Graham Richard Granillo Robert Grant Terry Gray Bob Gregory David Gregory Donna Gresham ONE BIG TEAM TO CHEER AT Tyler Haack Cathy Halderman Connie Halls Raymond Hamack Bill Hambly Robert Hamilton Diana Hansen Terry Hardin Darwin Harris Michelle Hatch Bob Hauser Steve Hendrickson Shelly Hensgen Sheryl Henson Nancy Hermes Randy Hess Don Hewitt Daryl Hcycmann Sue Hignitc Richard Hillman Kathy Iloekman Mark Hofman Frank Holinsworth Bertie Holloway Raymond Holt Jeanny Hopper Melissa Hubbard John Hudgins Jeff Hudkon Jim Hunter Ollic Hunter Carol Iverson Debbie Jackson Donna Jansen Bob Jinkins Sandy Jinkins 159 Brenda Johnson Brenda Johnson Linda Johnson Susan Johnson Cathy Jones Susie Jones Norela Jordan Leah Julius Bryan Justice Karen Kane Maitin Kartchncr Roc Kasper Bonita Kato Martin Kal Rick Kal Paul Kcirer ONE NEW FRIEND TO CONFIDE WITH James Kemp Don Kick Coco Kilfoil Joe Killingber Carla King Carlton King Cheryl Kinnc Cary Kirkwood Steve Kirkwood Margie Kleinjan Miles Kolkow Kris Koops Paul Koumis Bill Kramer Mary Kukiela Curtis Kuncau Michael Lambe I.rica Landson Debbie Larabce Bryan Larson Paula LaRocco Ray Lcchuga Sliaron l.cmas Susie Livick Amy Level Ron Lomicka Steve l.opc Marie Lopiccolo I red Logan Marl: Lullrcll Joins Lux 160 POLLY WALLY WAHHH POLLY WALLY WOOH Virginia Mabcrry John Malabicky Marylou Maldonado Rosemarie Maldonado Dennis Mallard Mike Mandas Donna Mangravito Frank Manranarcs Cindy Marquez Jim Martinez John Martinez Jana Mason Jan Massey Carlcne Mathews Steve Mathias Jim Mauman Kathy Me New Vicki Mccham Georgia Moore Nancy Morrow Leslie Moyc Richard N arclta Samuel Nunn Curtis McConnell Cindy McQuillen Jim Medians Connie Morales Cary Mosicr Donna Muchmore Randy Nathan Jan Nutter Pamela Me Daniel Barbara McU'old Jance Mcincs Mary' Morrison Jim Mosley Richard Munoz Mary Nelson Dora Cchoa Don McDonald Frances MacEachern Janie Mercier Mary Morrison Paul Mossingcr Peter Napman Connie Ocrlle Charlene McLaughlin Hob Mccham Barbara Meyers Janet Morrow Craig Moxon Janet Nadalsky Earl Noar Richard Okimolo 161 Colleen Clccnkamp Bill Olsen Mike Olsen Kim Panccroff Lynn Parker Rocky Pardo Mac Parker Debbie Partin Bill Paterson Doug Paterson Dave Pauli Joyce Perea Kerry Peterson Joe Payne Sandy Peyton Steve Phipps Jim Pichner John Pierce Joe Pllon Jana Polorena Dana Prentice Dan Prosser Dave Prouly Aggie Quinones Andre Quinones Joanna Ralston Jim Randall Sandra Rasile Dean Reiter Sherri Renzacci Kathy Reynolds Robin Rhodes Joe Riggs WE'RE THE MIGHTY JUNIORS WHOOO ARE YOUU??
