Monday brought the pic-eating con- test and the always rough Activities Night. Tuesday at snack, the Seniors beat the Juniors in the annual Tug ’O’ War. All relaxed at tl e Pizza Hootenanny that night. Wild West Day and the Car Show took place Wednesday. Thursday came, and the Homecoming-Talent Assembly set the stage for Homecoming Friday night. 75 PRINCESSES SHIRLEY RUNYAN r HOMECOMING NIGHT Princess Toni Olsen and escort Gary Gossett. Beginning with play tryouts, OUR TOWN represents a long, hard, coordinated effort by the Drama Department. Mrs. Elizabeth Smith in cooperation with Mr. Robert Newman directed the play and it was presented December 4,5 and 6. 80 81 CHRISTMAS DANCE 82 The Bellflower High School Christmas Dance was held this year on the Princess Louise. The name of the Christmas Dance was Sounds and Sleighbells ana was sponsored by the senior class. One hundred and fifty couples attended this annual affair. Sounds and Sleighbells took place at 8:00 p.m. Monday night, December 21, 1970 and concluded at the hour of midnight. 83 POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL The second annual Powdcrpuff Football game took place on No- vember 20, after many hard and rough hours of practicing. Ten- sion mounted between the two teams as the game drew near, with the Seniors smugly anticipating a sure win, which left the Juniors shaking in their little tennis shoes. Finally, it was game time. The Seniors took over as they scored a touchdown in the first quarter. The juniors fought back hard as they scored 12 points in the third quarter, all by Brenda Ford. The fourth quarter brought a bit of controversy as a touclxlown was made by Senior Star, Thelma Fabian. It was called back by referees, who admitted the mistake after the game; but it was too late as the final score ended Seniors - 6, Juniors - 12. Faculty and students struggled with their donkeys to get the all important winning score. The students won with a score of five to three. 85 86 MODERN DANCE 70-71 The Modern. Dance classes have been very productive this year. The Seniors have put on a dance show at Fullerton College along with eleven other Southern California High Schools. Five juniors also Itelped and took part in this. The two junior Modern Dance classes did dances for the Christ- mas Concert. They did dances from different parts of the world while the choir sang Jingle Bells in the native tongue. Accompanying them was the Bellflower High School Band. 87 88 UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE, this year's Spring Major Production was sponsored by the Drama Workshop class. Drama teacher, Robert Newman, chose the play for its relevant theme, which has made it the most frequently pro- duced play of 1971. The story revolves around the character of Sylvia Barrett, a frustrated young teacher at Calvin Cool- idge High School. She encounters many problems: rebellious students, the system, and just answering the statement, Hi, Teach! The play was pre- sented March 25, 26, and 27, and was enjoyed by all in attendance. 89 o o WSF began after a rollicking four-day weekend. High spirits prevailed as students watched Tuesday's activity, a water balloon fight between princesses and escorts. Wednesday's agenda featured combined lunch with 3 live band, Dovie Modcan. Apparently many stu- dents were inspired by the WSF court, as water bal- loons once again filled the air. Later in the day we were treated to the WSF assembly. Here the Winter Sports Festival Court made their official debut and a presentation was given by the coaches of the basketball and wrestling teams. Entertainment was provided by folk singer Tom Greene, who played many familiar songs. Thursday the school voted for their WSF Queen. Friday a pep rally contributed to the burgeoning ex- citement of WSF night, where King Crazy Legs, Ugly Man Wrestler and the 1971 Winter Sports Fes- tival Queen were crowned. 91 W.S.F. NIGHT If you like ugly men. crazy legs, and or winter beauties; you probably enjoyed this year's Winter Sports Festival Night. At half-time of the basketball game, excitement mounted as King Crazy Legs, John Garland; and Ugly Man Wrestler, Louie Snow; were presented. Finally the crowds curiosity was satisfied as Gloria Jocius was crowned the 1971 Winter Sports Festival Queen. 93 W.S.F. QUEEN GLORIA JOCIUS W.S.F. All but ten of the 30 made the complete distance. The purpose of this walk was to focus public attention on ecology. 98 Weird !, Fantastic!”, Farotit! were comments heard in the 600 wing during Me , the personnel perception exhibit presented by the art department this spring. The rooms were crowded with student booths, demonstrations, giants', littles , and interested spectators. 99 SINGING VALENTINES Cupid’s little messengers: otherwise known as the B.H.S. Choir, brought joy and red faces to many students on this year's Singing Valentines Day. Mushy strands of Honey Pic , Baby Face , and Close to You were echoing through the halls along with the distinct snickers of fellow classmates. At day’s end all the Choir’s cherubs shuffled wearily home with silence in their throats, but success jingling in their pockets. 100 THESPIAN PRODUCTIONS The Thespians, an active drama club, produced two very fine plays this year: Aria Da Capo” and The Slave With Two Faces. Presented Feb. 18 and 19, the plays revealed two complex, moving themes. Aria Da Capo was a surrealistic anti-war play. It dealt with two shepherds who decided to play a simple game which when combined with greed and desire, be- came deadly. The Slave With Two Faces, spoke of life, and how it can en- slave your life, unless you master it. The plays were another fine effort in the field of dramatic arts. 101 102 ABSURD ACTIVITIES 103 ■ CL £ 0 4 CL j L A- -- y$j L cX o ■L. £■ AJ L- Q. RICK BETHKE Leadership and dedication are two qualities which characterize the contributions that Rick Bethke has made in four years of athletics at BUS. Playing in two Varsity sports, Rick has shown all of the traits which are exemplary of Athlete of the Year. Rick has played on three championship football teams in his four years at BUS. Lettering on Var- sity for two years, Rick was chosen as the All-League Quarterback and the Most Valuable Player in the San Gabriel Valley league. Bethke also holds three career records at Bellflower High, Most Points Scored in One Game, Most Yards in One Game, and Most Yards in a Single Season. Rick is also a two year Varsity Letterman in Baseball, playing the positions of pitcher, 1st base- man, and outfielder. As a junior, Rick was the team leader in shutouts, strikeouts, and earned run average. In the 1971 season, he is the inside runner for All league Honors as a pitcher with a blazing fast ball and a sharp breaking curve. 142 THE YEAR MR. DAN DAVIDSON Hustle and desire are two words that help describe the type of play that Dan Davison has displayed in three Varsity sports at Bellflower High. Dan was a three year Varsity letterman in football. He was a member of two championship teams and holds one career record at BUS: the total yardage made for pass receiving in a season. Dan caught thirty passes for a total of 548 yards. Dan was also a member of Varsity Basketball. His overall leadership was instrumental in the Bucs climb to the C.I. F. AAA Championships. The 5'H guard was also honored by receiving the S.G. V. L. ’$ Most Valuable Player award. In addition. Davidson was a two year Varsity letterman in Baseball. Playing the key position of shortstop, he is a strong candidate for All league Honors as an infielder with speed, quick hands, and strong batting in the 1971 season. 143 Top Row: T. Davidson R. The team began to play football with enthusiasm. Though they lost their last games by one touchdown we tied for 2nd place. They were led by the hard running of Barryl Burbridge and Pat Divine, and the fine pass catching of Steve Teague, Rhett Whaley, and John Conner. Three talented teams have fallen to this diminutive team as they continued to surprise the sports world. Bellflower, an unexpected C.I.F. AAA finalist, has edged three opponents in the tough upper bracket, including the No. I ranked and previously unbeaten West Covina (27-0) in the last ten seconds. Dan Davidson and Phil Weinberg have been the team leaders all year. Jim Hamilton has been outstand- ing on defense and John Garland has been an out- standing rebounder.
