A friendly smile, a soft voice, and a helping hand towards student problems, these are a few of the many characteristics of Mrs. Palmer. She was born and raised in Los Angeles. She attended standing in line to get her annual. Mrs. Palmer is always ready to assist students who are staying late painting posters, or distracted club presidents with late notices to be put in the next day's bulletin, or helping newly elected treasurers get their club finances straightened out. How Mrs. Palmer can get her work done with at least fifty people in the activities office at once, yelling and asking questions, is a miracle, but she does, efficiently and cheer- fully. She takes care of ordering all of the materials, plus working every morning in the attendance office during the mad rush. Without our activities office secretary, the annual staff, student government, clubs, and practically all school activi- ties could not function. We the Annual Staff, as representa- tives of the entire BHS population, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Palmer, as a token of our gratitude and thanks. 6 Uyt$. These people must be versatile and imaginative to handle such problems as guidance and discipline of students, supervising and advising teachers in instructional matters, or sponsoring specific school wide functions. You will always find Dr. Torres deep in the action of our Girl s League activities on campus. The League would like to thank Dr. Torres for her fine advice to the League this year. Mr. Killeen, Sub School B, works hard coordinating all activities pertaining to athletic events. You will often find him down at Huntington Beach on a hot day when the absentees seem a little high, bringing in the students who think soaking-in-the-rays is better than a text book. Mr. Thompson, Sub School C, represents the curri- culum side of B.H.S., including data processing and school improvement programs. He also works with the book room and advising the school films for the various departments. They always manage to find time to assist confused teens and answer their questions. The students at Bellflower High should be grateful for such exceptional counselors. 14 Tti R gfi6 pwm Mrs. Betty Palmer Mrs. Lucille Goodlad Louisa Sherman Mrs. Dorothy Knackert Mrs. Mary Fay Mrs. Geraldine Hodge Mrs. Nellie Day Mrs. Mildred Greer Minnie Koning Mrs. Eileen Rogers A pencil that always needs sharpen- ing, a pen that is always in need of ink, broken finger nails from a hard day of typing—these are all results of a hard day on the secretary staff at Bellflower High. When asked her basic duties she could write you a book. Every day is filled with new problems and new challenges. Many times we do not give enough credit to the hard work of the Secretarial Staff but without them B.H.S. could not function. 15 Mrs. Melva Mirch President The prime concern of the Bellflower High Parent-Teachers Association is the welfare of the students. Social and athletic functions are a couple of the things PTA has been especially active with at BHS. They sponsor the Home- coming Dance, sponsor and chaperone all the Grad-Nite activities, and donate half of the profits from their concession stands at foot- ball games to the Student Body Fund. PTA helps the city of Bellflower in general also. The unit con- tributes to Medical and Dental Health Funds, provides clothing for students when necessary, they give food to less fortunate families, and promote Parent Education. Mrs. George Mirch has been president of this organization for the year 1967-68. Other board members include Messers Stanley Ripley, Harley Kennedy, Walter Schulte, Lloyd Brower, Rollo Alexan- der, Glenn Poteet, William Purselley, Floyd Hewitt, John Bennett, James Fouquette, and Thomas Wells. One of the more popular classes in I.A. is the Electronics II class. This class is concerned with two-way radio communications on a hobby level. Ham radio. The objective of the class is to encourage and help students obtain their FCC license so that they can communicate with other '■Hams'' around the world. The Electronics class has their own ham radio station which students with FCC licenses may use. Another high light of the I.A. De- partment is Project Christmas , sponsored by the wood shop. The many classes offered in our English Department strive to de- velope not only literate citizens but cultured young adults also. A Bellflower High diploma re- quires A years of English. The course of study may vary from Greek myth- ology to the modern literature of E. E. Cummings and T. S. Eliot. The classes offered are Communication skills. Ltfc'ttf uj Qtc A k Qtudmis This year Bellflower is proud of the new audio visual room in our library. Students can listen to records for their particular course of study. They hope for a tape recorder along with records for every course on campus. Our library is continually striving for a better place students can come for individual study and research. For the students convenience, the BHS library is open two nights a week where anyone can study undisturbed. Mrs. Alexander and her staff, including four monitors a period, take pride in making our BHS library a better place for students to come to do homework. 26 Mrs. Alexander MA Wayne $?atc Univ. Mrs, Sandra Fiorentino BA Univ. of Pittsburg Mrs. Kathleen McKinney Dept. Head AB San Diego State The objectives of the Language Department are to give to the studeri; a basic skill in speaking a foreign language and an appreciation of the culture involved. The ultimate purpose of language study is to develop fluency in the use of the language as a means of communication both oral and written. Learning a language expands the students' experience through references to other countries, customs, manners, and idioms of speech. It is hoped that students will become more understanding and cosmopolito.n as a result of their language experience. As more students prepare for travel, it is important that they have a familiarity with the uniqueness of a foreign land. Mrs. Car.delaria Sanchez BA Arizona Stare Univ. Mrs Elsie Mitchell BuonUtg UicjhQclioot This is the tenth year the BHS Evening High School has been in operation. The number of classes has tripled since that time. There are now 66 classes and more than 2,200 registered students ranging in age from 17 to 64. They attend Evening High School for a variety of reasons, among those being the need for a high school diploma, the objective of job advancement, or the desire to enhance in personal development. Head BA Whittier College The Special Education Department is aimed at individualized and small group instruction in which students enjoy a relaxed relationship with their teachers. Both required and elective courses emphasize material which gives students a realistic knowledge needed to function adequately in com- munity and home situations. In addition, students are employed in jobs both on and off campus before graduation. This work experience offers the students a great opportunity to gain valuable skills which provide an introduction to the work world. After graduation, students receive additional training and guidance through the State Department of Rehabilitation with which the school has a cooperative. 30 At BHS the Mathematics Depart- ment is whizzing along with the rest of the world by joining the com- puter age. The students take their tests and put their answers on com- puter cards. These are run through a computer and the returning tally sheets show the students the per- centage of answers they had cor- rect and the percentage in compari- son to the rest of the class. Five years ago the Math Depart- ment changed over completely from traditional to the modern math. This year Consumer Math is only offered to Juniors and Seniors; be- cause it was felt that they v ould benefit more from this class than underclassmen. Also this year the Math Depart, ment has begun a new course, Basic Math. This is only for Sophomores who did poorly on the math test in Freshmen testing. The first semester of the 67-68 school year continued the Buccaneer tradition of tremendous school spirit. Coming back from the summer vacation the Freshmen bumped into poles and walls, the Sophomores came back owning’' the school, and the Juniors and Seniors came back wearing beads. The year moved on to be a truly interesting experience. The various clubs and organizations on campus joined to promote school spirit and a clean campus. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone responsible for making this year what it was. I know the knowledge I gained this year as Fall Semester A.S.B. I can not predict what is to have happened by the time you read this, but only hope. I sincerely hope that better communication has been established, not only between the students and the admin- istration, but between students themselves. Often it seems that the different groups on campus do not communicate with each other, which produces a certain amount of confusion. This leaves student leaders guessing about as to what the stu- dents want, therefore, they serve no one. Believe it or not there are some student officers who have a sincere desire to do what the students themselves feel necessary. I hope that at least some of the desires of the students have been fulfilled. I hope that the student government has become more effective than in previous years, that more students have taken an in- terest n their school, and become involved in its operation. That is a lot to hope for, but if we've made the least bit of progress toward these goals then I feel we will have had a successful Spring Semester. If you have liked what has hap- pened this semester, then thank the A.S.B. Cabinet and the leadership class, for they do all the hard work. If you don't like what has happened then blame me, because it was prob- ably my fault for not doing anything about it. Mr. John Killeen is Vice Principal at BH$, along with being one of the coolest guys on campus. He is loved by all the students because he cares about making the relationship with faculty and students a better one. He helped start the year of 1968 with enthusiasm by having a luncheon for student leaders during the summer at his home to discuss student problems. It has been report- ed that Mr. Killeen has been seen by students making his way down to Hun- tington Beach in his convertible with the top down ready for a hard day of surf- ing. The long hours and short class periods have all added up to a lot of individual time put into the anual by each one of the staff mem- bers. The deadlines were continually looming up to be met and the imagina- tions of all were constantly clicking to find new and exciting material for this year's annual. Tuesday night the Senior class sponsored a Pizza-Hootenanny in the cafetorium. On Wednesday the 25th, a Talent Assembly was held in honor of the five Prin- cesses. The five princesses were escorted into the assembly through two lines of Sr. varsity football players and Sr. drill team members. Queen Gwen Burbick, Princess Katie Doktor, Princess Diana Maris, Princess Nancy Mirch, and Princess Nancy Nelson were asked in turn different questions concerning topics such as school spirit, their future plans, and also asked to demonstrate something they are known on campus for. The assembly included numbers from: The Ensemble, The Folk Fossils, Freddy Taylor, Marion McKensie, and the Lonely Hearts. Thursday the Senior girls celebrated Bianca Day, along with Roaring 20's Day. They met in senior parking lot and rode their bikes to the Hollandease Restaurant for breakfast. Friday night was the highlight of the week's activities. The Homecoming Parade proved to be one of the best Bellflower has ever had. The game followed with the Bucs winning over La Mirada 27-0. The Buc Band and drill team performed a half-time show where Queen Gwen was crowned and presented as the 1967 Homecoming Queen. The choir this year consisted of seventy members. Various school concerts were given to delight the school students as well as the public. One of the biggest events was the Spring Musical sponsored by almost every Dept, at Bellflower High. The annual Christmas program featured the A Cappella Choir singing the famed ' Gloria written by Vavaldi along with the traditional Christmas carols. Mr. John Thompson is to be congratulated for a successful first year at Bellflower High. They ore at this time, thinking, not so much of the future as of the past years at Bell- flower High. Starting with their years as eager and en- thusiastic Freshmen and Sophomores, joining and sup- porting the many projects and activities. Bellflower High was quite a place. Beginning to come into their own as Juniors with all the activities, ordering the class rings and the Senior Keys, planning their careers, and topping it off by spon- soring the Junior-Senior Prom, Spring Fantasia. At last the time came, they were Seniors with high spirits and enthusiasm which led to the many successful activities such as, the Pizza Dinner. Then finishing the year off with the Senior All-Night Party at Disneyland. The past four years and the many friends, students and faculty, that were made will be remembered by everyone long after Commencement has passed. So we face the future but, remember the past. Yes, Bellflower High was and is, indeed, quite a place. Highlites of the year were upset victories over the highly rated John Glenn and California schools. The John Glenn victory came in the first round of the CIF playoffs as the Seventh ranked Glenn who had a season record of 25-1 was dumped in the last twenty seconds as Ev Fopma came through with a ten foot jump shot, for a 50 to 49 victory. The California Condors sporting a 16-2 record on entering league play were stopped by the Bucs 54-53 when Pat Olson sank a seventeen foot jump shot with just eight seconds on the clock. This year has been one of the best spirited years at BHS. We would like to thank the members of Pep Club, because they were the ones who helped initiate this spirit and pride. Pep Club has accomplished many things to promote Buc Spirit, such as selling mega- phones, pennants, buc booster buttons, and ribbons. The active members spent many hard hours decorating the goal posts and the Buc Stadium at all home games. They sponsored a faculty night which proved to be very successful. They also made posters every week, baked cakes, and sent good luck notes to support all teams and to show their pride. The '67-'68 officers deserve a lot of credit and thanks. The foremost contribution to the year's exciting events was the Junior-Senior Prom, which surpassed those held in previous years. It was truly a memorable event. As Freshmen they sponsored several very successful sock hops and did a great deal to make the Homecoming dance one of tremendous enjoyment. This year, the Sophomores worked hard to make Home- coming week the greatest week ever. They sponsored the pie- eating contest, purchased the Queen s gift, all the flowers for the court and secured the throne. One of the more humorous events sponsored by the Class of '70 was the Donkey Basketball Game. It was a fabulous success. The Sophomores gave very generously to the United Cru- sade Drive. They took first place over the Seniors, and the lower classmen. In the future you can expect to see many more even greater accomplishments by the class of 1970. As the Faculty Stars came to the court the crowd tried to cheer them to victory. The first half of the game the teams tried to battle their way to victory. To make the game more exciting the Faculty decided to have their own half time show. All the teachers that are musically inclined became the ’ Great Faculty band. To cheer the Faculty Stars to an almost victory were the Faculty cheer- leaders. As the game continued the Harlem Stars stayed away from the mighty Faculty Players. The Harlem Stars stayed out in front to the end of the game by one point. Annual Staff can't believe it's finally over. Senior Square escopades will only be cherished by a few. The realization of graduation finally hits Linda Redmond. 238 As this year comes to a close, we the Co-Editors, would like to leave you this 1968 Treasure Chest. Filled with many wonderful memories, we can look back on the most hectic and eventful year of our lives. We both have learned a lot about the trials and tribulations of being responsible for a school yearbook. Most of all we have learned what self-satis- faction is, and how you must depend on yourself and a few reliable people to finish a job that means a lot to you. We feel this is another part of the Bits and Pieces of your life at BHS. This year has ended with many fulfilling moments, which you will cherish forever. We hope this will bring back some of those wonderful times you shared. We can't express enough appreciation and gratitude to all the wonderful people that helped contribute to make this annual possible. Most of all, to Mr. Don Moore!!! Without him, we would have never completed this annual. He was always so understanding and he made it a wonderful experience. We will always remember the hardships, but profit by our mistakes. Also Mrs. Bettie Palmer who was always backing us up with an extra pencil and a pair of scissors. Our staff as a whole was by far the best B.H.S. has ever had. Special thanks to Mr. Myron Brown and Ray Brown for helping us so much with all the photography. Our gratitude goes to Theresa Kegley and other members of the student body, for selling ads!! Our hard working Staff gave up many holidays and personal hours to work on this yearbook, and we feel they de- serve a lot of credit for their effort and talent. Our deepest appreciation goes to Mr. Bill Hubble for all of his points and suggestions from Taylor Publishing Company. Also for being so understanding when our deadlines weren't made! To our extra hard workers Linda Redmond, Christie Brush, Bt b Ballard, Laura Gardea, THANKS so much for all your help on all the sections. All of our appreciation to Mary Berry, Debbie Hays, Jody Hodges, Chris Morehouse, Brenda O'Neal, Carol Rippee, Dawn Slaughter, Linda Vander Velde, Dan Valentine, Steve Waltz, Terry Alsenz, Mary Winnie, and Joe Wood. As we bid farewell to the Seniors, and look forward to our last year, we hope you will look back on the Bits and Pieces of this year! Pe99y clSL 240
