As a teacher at Bellflower for the past ten years, coming in close contact with students, she has acquired the knowledge and experience for un- derstanding young people and their problems. Students who have worked closely with her say that she has a wonderful way of making them think for themselves and helping them to realize their potentialities. A big vote of thanks goes to her in the position of Senior Class Sponsor, for the co-ordination of Senior activities on campus. As our advisor, friend, and TEACHER, in appre- ciation and gratitude, we dedicate this 1960 TREASURE CHEST to you . . . Miss Carmen Osier BOARD OF EDUCATION: MrĀ . Irene L. Brandt, Dr. C. H. With the Bellflower Junior Chamber of Commerce as their sponsor they held activity nights every Wednesday. A very successful dance in August highlighted the summer program. Planning pep rallies, assemblies, and sponsoring student body legislation were included in the many tasks which the cabinet undertook. Revising the Student Body Constitu- tion and presenting it to the Bellflower Board of Education was also completed. Organizing the homecoming activities, presenting a talent assembly, honoring the exchange students from Mexico, and sponsoring a very successful beatnik dance completed the cabinet's activities. The class had numerous snack sales to gain money for the treasury, two assemblies during the year, and a very successful Freshman party. The Sophomore Class of 1957 was an active and energetic class. We had several fund raising activities that have become customs on the Bellflower campus. These included promoting the sale of chrysanthemums at the Homecoming game and sponsoring the sock-hops after football and basketball games. We had a Sophomore week which was exciting and full of various activities, climaxed by our special dance. At the dance Sopho- more president Bill Tucker crowned Terry Craig as Sophomore Sweetheart. After the fun-filled week we selected our Junior sweaters and rings. The Sophomore Class was looked upon as the most active in school. This was accomplished through the hard work of every Sophomore to promote his class above the others. As the Junior Class of 1958, our activities started with the traditional Junior Sweater Swing where we wore our black and gray class sweaters. Senior rings arrived early in the year which added to the excitement and prestige of the students. Eleele o-Nani (Evening in Paradise) was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom, which was the largest and one of the most successful ever attended. The Hawaiian atmosphere at the Lafayette Hotel will be remembered a long time. Our class has had some of the finest athletes produced at Bellflower who have given much pride to all of us. Our financial projects gave us more than enough resources to help us for the coming graduating year of 1960. After an enjoyable summer, we, the class of 1960, came back to Bellflower High School to occupy the coveted positions of Seniors. With this honor came the fulfillment of our many dreams. This year Senior Square was filled to its highest capacity, the class of '60 numbering over 500 strong. December came and Bellflower High School enjoyed a successful Christmas Dance sponsored by the Senior Class, who in February sponsored the unforgettable Sweethearts' Ball. As the end of the year approached, the class of '60 was finally allowed its long awaited Ditch Day. Then, at last, came the final formal event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Graduation exercises in June closed four of the most important years of our lives with a long period of opportunity and happiness lying before us. Eugenia Brandemarte Bill Tucker Rick Enright Bob Cox āLife is a quarry, out of which we are to mold and chisel and complete a character. āGoethe The above quotation contains true words of wis- dom which should be considered by each of us as graduating Seniors. At this point we've com- pleted possibly one-fourth of our lives, most of which have been devoted to school and the pro- cesses of learning. Unknowingly we have pro- ceeded to mold, develop, and complete our individual characters from our experiences and activities, with the influence of our families, friends, and surroundings. Our separate charac- ters, composed of our different social, moral, and intellectual selves, are a large part of our prepa- ration for the remaining three-fourths of our lives, in which lies unlimited opportunity. As we separate and go our many different ways it is our character which will largely determine the amount of success and happiness we will attain. Although the basic parts of our character have already been formed, the final polishing and finishing of the end product still lies ahead of us. It is at this time that we should realize that although we're the young men and women of today ā we're the adult leaders of tomorrow. My desire for this class of 1960 is that we will accept this responsibility and become the leaders for which our characters have prepared us. Bob Cox Senior Class President 39 Bob Cox. Treasurer The Senior Class officers have done much to make this a successful year for their class at Bellflower High. They helped plan many of the important activities of the year such as the Christmas Dance, Sweetheart's Ball, Senior Ditch Day and Senior Graduation party. The officers spent many hours in helping to plan, direct, and carry on the activities of their class. Congratulations to the Senior officers for a job very well donel 40 C ' ° Osenior s There is no doubt that Miss Osier and Mr. Stowe prac- ticed their psychology on the learned seniors, and Mrs. DeWitt had plenty of opportunities to see the results of the English department. Mr. Sienknecht did his best to instill a democratic spirit to his American Government classes. We are sure that the Senior Class will always remember their sponsors as their friends and counselors. The Senior Class of 1960 is very indebted to their spon- sors who gave them advice and co-operation throughout the year. In addition to their many duties of teaching they were always willing to help assist the seniors. Besides chap- eroning many of the senior activities, they also attended many of the school dances. The Senior Class steering committee was always able to obtain help from them. 41 Mr . DeWilf, Mr. Stowe StudentĀ are enjoying the pleoturoĀ of Senior Square. CEE During the 1959-60 season the Bellflower Buc ā,Cee'' team won fifteen, while losing nine for the entire season, and finished with a five won, five lost league season. One of the highlights of the season, was the win- ning of the Second Annual Bellflower Class C Basketball Tournament. Ray Stevens and John Uzzi were named to the All-Tour- nament Team. Four Cee records were broken this year: John Uzzi, total points in one game: 15; John Uzzi, most points in one season: 128; Ray Stevens, most rebounds in one game, 10,- Ray Stevens, most rebounds in one sea- son: 71. DEE The Buc Dees'' ended the season with a record of six wins and nine losses. A pair of losses to Santa Fe, one by two points scored as the game ended and the other in a double overtime, were the difference in what might have been a more successful season. High scorer for the team was Jack Cleghorn who had a season total of ninety- four points. Individual game scoring honors went to Larry Littlefield who scored eighteen in the season's opener with Mira Costa. Tom Case, team captain, led in the rebound race with a total of fifty-three in league play. Qymnastics losing a few of last year's lettermen has not stopped this year's Bellflower High gym team from making splendid improvements. The team composed of such young men as Jack Williams on the rope, Kenny McDonald on the long horse, and Gary Heit and Gus Gold in tumbling has given an excellent account of itself. The squad was considerably bolstered by new material, and as usual, Coach Chuck Droves worked miracles with the new men as well as the veterans. This year's team has many things to be thankful for, among these the new parallel bar mats, high bar, and long horse beat board' that the school has provided for the team. The team has had a long and exciting season. Used to winning nearly all of its pre-league matches in previous years, the team saw a turnabout in prelim- inary matches as the 1960 season got underway. The J.V.'s started the season with wins over Earl Warren and Paramount, and with losses to Whittier, Lynwood, and Wilson.
