The seniors especially have many memorable experiences to recall. The Treasure Chest is a guide to every student s memories. This year’s senior class was the largest to graduate in the history of Bellflower. Of course, we cannot omit the other classses who, with their aid, made it possible for us to have the largest student body registration in the history of the school. Throughout the existence of Bellflower High School, many achievements have been made for the benefit of the students. As for the '58 seniors, they too have contributed to the progress of their Alma Mater. One of the major developments this year was the three- in-one school system. With this new system it was possible for all students to receive better counseling from the faculty and administrative staff. The newest and most thrilling experience of the year was the dedication of the new Buccaneer Stadium. Although this year’s seniors would have enjoyed the priv- ilege of seeing a swimming pool on campus, it seems it just wasn’t possible. Because of this, the Treasure Chest staff took this idea and the fact that our community is located near a body of water and tried to find a theme. After considerable work and thought, we decided that Under Water would be a fitting theme. We hope that all Buccaneers will enjoy their chest of under- water treasures. Since the yearbook theme is Under the Sea, the honored prodagogue is an appropriate selection because of his connection with the sea. This teacher came to Bellflower in 1952 after teaching for a year at Fuller- ton. While in the field of public instruction, this individual has taught General Science, Health, Social Studies, Senior Problems, and American History. He has been a basketball coach and currently is a counselor for School Three. In 1953 he completed the requirements for an administrative credential and received the Master Degree in 1951. Before going into the teaching profession, he was a co%pilot for T.W.A. and is now on leave of absence from the air lines. In addition to this, he is also a Lt. Commander in the Naval Reserve. Almost every week-end you will find him flying at the Naval Reserve Air Station. In his spare time, he is the sponsor of the Skin Diving Club at School. He enjoys such sports as water skiing and skin diving. One of his prize possessions is his boat. During the summer he flies airplanes to and from Catalina Island. He is married and has two children, a girl and a boy. To you, William Brown, we dedicate this '58 Treasure Chest.” 10 Dr. Margaret Orear Assistant Superintendent Mr. Charles Kendle Director of Special Service Dr. C. H. Ozanian President Mrs. Geneva H. One of the reasons for this was the construction of a new foot- ball stadium. All Buccaneers wish to express their apprecia- tion to these individuals who saw the need for this project and who are continually striving to obtain the best for Bellflower students. s 12; 5 5iS§S si i I VV '-V n v Serving to remind you of the faces Jir d this yearbook will grow in richness and rmWnr Treasure Chest. This dance established a friendly atmosphere which prevailed throughout the year. This year, Senior Square was filled to its fullest capacity, over 400 strong. In February the seniors sponsored the annual Sweethearts' Ball and in March the class started the first Senior Parents' Dance . Then came the end of May and with it brought the last formal event for the class members, the Junior-Senior Prom . The Graduation exercises on June 20 brought to an end the four most important years in our lives. Freshmen After much confusion with their arrival at a campus larger than those of which they were accustomed the Freshmen were the guests of the Senior Class at the Get Acquainted Dance. The Class bnefited as they met other new students and soon realized their importance as compared to that of the upper- classmen. Fewer activities were held this year than by previous Freshmen Classes because of the competition from upperclassmen as well as the increased num- ber of students enrolled. This will be the last of the larger Freshmen Classes for Bellflower, due to the fact, next year, a split will result from the building of the new Mayfair High School. Athlete of the Year To obtain the honor of Athlete of the Year a boy must be a well rounded athlete. He must possess good sportsmanship, have a satisfactory scholastic record, and display concentrated effort. Our choice for the award this year was born on June 27, 1940, in South Gate, California. Later his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he attended ele- mentary school. When our athlete reached the age seven years, he was stricken with polio. He was in hos- pital for three weeks, and out of school for six months. The affliction incurred some muscular damage to the left foot. Another tragedy in our athlete's life was that at eleven years old he was injured in a shooting accident, which required four major operations. Altogether, our athlete had five operations, but this did not stop him from becoming an outstanding athlete. When the time came for him to enter junior high school, his family moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey. This was where he began his sports activity. During his first year, he was on the swimming and football teams. Just as they began to get settled, they moved to Chamblee, Georgia. As a freshman he was on the varsity football team in which he received a varsity letter. One of his great moments was when he' had the opportunity to play in the same game with his se or brother. In spring he went out :or baseball, playing the position of catcher. He also played on summer baseball teams. When he was a sophomore, his family moved to Arlington, Texas. Because of regulations in Texas, he was not allowed to compete in varsity football?so he played on the B team. Later in the year he joined the varsity basketball and baseball teams, receiving a letter in both sports. He played forward and catcher positions. In the summer of 1956, he was on a summer base- ball team which won the championship of Arlington. At the beginning of his junior year, he joined the varsity football team and received honorable mention and All- League honors besides a letter. He again competed in varsity basketball and received a letter. During the sec- ond semester, his family moved to Bellflower, California. Because of the possibility of moving back to Texas, he did not compete in sports. He played on the varsity football team as a tackle during his senior year. He was selected as Tackle on the All-League Team and was chosen outstanding lineman for Bellflower High School. He played the forward position on the basketball team. During the spring season he played the position of catcher on the varsity baseball team. One of his goals in all his athletic achievements was to live up to records set by his older brother, which in- cluded setting a state record in track. We feel that our athlete has not only accomplished this, but he has sur- passed his earlier goals. His athletic abilities have many times been overshadowed by his personality and sports- manship. Everywhere he has attended school, he has made a fine reputation for himself, yet his humble atti- tude is one of his strongest virtuuj | His plans for the future incluao four years ©f college with the possibility of being a ccach. The college he will enroll in has not been chosen. We feel that what- ever school he attends, he will continue to show the ability he has shown during his last four years. May you, Phil Oram, continue to demonstrate the qualities which won for you the award of Athlete j f the Year 1958. 135 0 0 Queen Kay Murray being crowned by Student Body President Allen Johnson. On October 17, 1937 in Hibbing, Minnesota Kathleen (Kay) Mary Murray was born. She lived there until she was six years old, and then she and her family moved to Bellflower where Kay went to Horace Mann Grammar School for the first, second, and third grades. Then she went to Woodrow Wilson School for the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. When the time came for her to enter Junior High School, she went to Roosevelt and then on to Bell- flower High School. When Kay was a Freshman she became a very active student; her activities include: Freshman Girls Chorus; Girls Glee; A Cappella Choir 3 and 4; Steering Committee 1, 2, and 3; Yell Leader 3 and 4; Head Yell Leader 3 and 4; G.A.A. 1, 2, 3, and 4; Tennis Team,- House of Representatives Member 3; Cabinet 3 and 4; Homecoming Activities 3 and 4. Her hobbies are synchronized swimming, tennis, golf, and reading. Kay is one of the cutest girls on campus. and her vivacious personality is a virtue we would all like to possess. She is 5 feet 1 ’ 2 inches tall, weighs 112 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes. When she completes high school she would like to go on with her schooling at San Jose State College, ma- joring in Liberal Arts, and then marriage. Kay's princesses were: Sue Vender May, a 16 year old senior, who was born in Long Beach; Mary Devinney, another 17 year old senior, born in Kansas City, Missouri; and Dee Moss, a 17 year old senior, born in Phoenix, Arizona. These girls were lovely as they awaited the surprise crowning of the Queen. The girls rode in on the float drawn by a Thunderbird. For the first time in the history of Bellflower High a parade was held before our home- coming activities. This was enjoyed by parents, alumni, and students alike. Varsity Row Is D. Lawson, S. Class Play The All School Ploy Night Must Fall ' an exciting drama packed with chill- ing suspense was the second big production held in Studio 10, Bellflower High School’s Little Theater. Night Must Mall was first produced in London with the author, Emilyn Williams in the male lead. The play coupled with the fact that it was done in intimate theater is enough to spell suspense but when you add a brilliant performance on the part of the cast you have an excellent pro- duction guaranteed to keep you glued to your seat. Due to the hard work of people like Mr. Robert Newman, Miss Ethel Berg and the people who worked under them, it can safely be said that Night Must Fall was a big success. Right: Egad, foiled again.
