For most it was a happy and exciting year, and yet to some it was a sad year. As seniors of Bellflower we say good-by for the last time to a school that was as much a part of us as we allowed it to be, thus joining an ever growing group of alumni. These past four years contain many memories for us. As we venture into the world, saying good-by so some of our friends, those memories will remain in our hearts forever. For this reason, the Treasure Chest staff has tried to capture some of the thought, feelings, and happen- ings of the past year, and has chosen the theme, Treasure Chest of Memories. It is especially brought to our attention as the object of one of our most cherished memories. When thinking of football, we think of the coaches. We think this year of one coach in particular. He has helped in developing sportsmanship and has been a guide post for setting up good standards and has encouraged fair play in the classroom as well as on the playing field. He has set goals that students will strive for in years to come. $ As we look back on the past four years at Bellflower, we see how this man has helped in creating many long- lasting memories. We dedicate this book of memories to you. Coach Walter Hackett. 10 DR. NORMAN WAMPLER Superintendent of the newly organized Bellflower Unified School District. BOARD OF TRUSTEES, Mr. Irene Brandt, Mr. Kcndoll Booth Jr., Mr. Avery Reeves, Mrs. Genva Goodbon, Dr. Norman, Wampler. Dr. O. H. Ozanian. JOHN PRASCH PRINCIPAL A school annual represents a lasting bond between you and your school long after you have ceased to be a student. This pictorial record of a year at Bellflower High School is indeed a Treasure Chest which will yield many happy memories for you in the future. Only when we set forth to compile the record of a year, such as is done in this book, do we get a full realization of the many opportunties which our high school offers. As you leaf through the pages of this volume in some future year, we hope you will become concerned about preserving and im- proving these high school opportunities for the youth of our land. Eldon Morgan became our first president; on his cabinet we found, Glen Jones as vice president; Marcia Williams, secretary; Kay Skinner, treasurer; Loretta Wilkerson, historian, and Jack Cramer, sergeant-at-arms. The most outstanding event of our first year was the freshman talent assembly. As sophomores and leaders of school spirit we set a new tradition for Bell- flower High. This being Sophomore Week. For our class this included a sale, our 'Caesar'’ assembly and ended with a sock-hop in the school gym. During that year our officers were Antionette Olivera, Wilba Adcock, Jack Cramer, Jim Byers, Fred Childers and Marcia Williams. Our junior year was truly an unforgettable one. Gary Smith, as president, led the class in choosing our class sweaters. We chose “California Sunset, a coral, with charcoal grey to set ourselves off from the rest of the school. We cele- brated the arrival of these sweaters with the Junior Sweater Swing held in December of that year. Gary Smith, Wilba Adcock, Jerri Olson and Bob Crane, as class officers, helped make successful the Junior-Senior Prom, “Moonlight Melodies, held at the Lakewood Country Club. Of course, we can not overlook our senior year which was the most suc- cessful of all. Many changes came over Bellflower High this year, including a new tree purchased and planted on the Senior Square at the beginning of the year. Our class rings were received in October and our senior pictures were taken during October and November. We sponsored the very successful Sweet- hearts Ball in February and, of course, the unforgettable All Night Party. As each of us goes our separate way, our high school experiences will re- main in our album of memories forever. The graduating class of 1957 will always remember their classmate Judith Kay Leinen who met death in an auto accident October 6, 1956. Judy moved to California in 1941 from Taylorville, Illinois, with her parents and an older sister. She attended elementary and junior high schools in the vicinity of Bellflower. In 1953, she entered Bellflower High School as a freshman. Her favorite subjects in high school were home economics and typing. Her hobbies were swimming, dancing, and sewing. She spent most of her spare time making many clothes for herself and others. Judy had a winning personality, and was very popular all through her high school years. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Leinen reside at 16222 Lakewood Boulevard in Bellflower, with their young daughter Kathy, 13, who is planning to attend Bellflower next fall. Their oldest daughter, Donna Ballard, is a graduate of Bellflower High School. Judy's memory will always be cherished in the hearts of her many friends and classmates. I Tries ii sniox Szniox Mr. Mike Escorcia The advice and assistance of these two men have been of great value to the activities and the problems of our seniors. This was Mr. Palmer's third year at Bellflower and the first for Mr. Escorcia. They, working together, have proved to be a spark to the moral and spirit of our senior class. ADAMS. JUDY Freshman G. We all were very proud of our sweaters and wore them proudly on the school campus despite the mocking of the seniors and their gunny sacks. The colors which we chose were toast heather and brown. In the end of May we sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The Disneyland Hotel was where it was held. I am sure we all can say that a good time was had by all. We only hope that it will add to the Senior Treasure Chest of Memories. They held it in the spring of the year. During that week the Sophomore Bucs were dressed in colors of baby blue and white. Two of the high points of the week were the unusual assembly and well attended dance. One of the new things added in this week was the presenting of a gift to the Senior Class. Stowe Four years of hard work, concentrated effort, good sportsmanship, and a satisfactory scholastic record, proved to be the combination necessary for this graduating senior to be named Athlete of the Year. This award is presented yearly by the Treasure Chest staff. It is presented to the senior boy athlete who has shown good sports- manship, athletic ability and participation, good citizenship in his classes at school, and a good satisfactory scholastic record during his entire four years. The selection is made through a com- mittee, composed of faculty members. Several boys are nominated, and then a careful survey is taken to check on each boy's record during his years at Bellflower High School. Two coaches handle the athletic part of the investigation; two social studies teachers take care of the maturity and citizenship inspection, and two other aca- demic-teachers check his grades. The facts on all the candidates are brought together and the ath- lete of the year is then selected. The one who was chosen this year was born in October in the year 1939, the day was just before Halloween, the 30th, in the town of Wag- oner, Oklahoma. Shorty after his family moved to California, he had his first taste of school, re- ceiving his first year of education in Spreckels, California. In 1945 they moved to Phoenix, Ari- zona, where he attended Roosevelt Elementary School in that city. In his junior high years, he started showing interest in sports and took part in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was an average player, working hard and giving each sport his best efforts. He was not an out- standing player, but showed great promise and developed into being a real team player. In the summer of 1953, he and his mother moved back to California and settled in our Bell- flower area. He entered Bellflower High School as a freshman. In that year he went out for all sports and started on the pathway that led him to this high achievement. On the Varsity football team he played the position of right end, alternating between out- side linebacker and defensive halfback and was equally adept at both. He lettered four years in basketball, playing the forward position. This past year he was one of the top league scorers. He lettered three years in track, the 440 being his favorite event. In this time he displayed complete loyalty to the athletic program and strict adherence to the athletic code. His main interests other than school activities, are sports. He spends most of his spare time either practicing basketball or water skiing, of which he is very fond. His future plans are centered around attend- ing college this next fall, for he has been offered athletic scholarships from the University of Tulsa, Oregon State College, and U.C.L.A. College coaches have said that he is one of the most promising college prospects this year. He plans to major in Physical Education and become a coach. Whatever his plans may be, or however they may turn out, we hope that he will continue to display his sportsmanship and his high standard in whatever field he may enter. May he always show his best efforts and ability that has earned him the honor of being the 1957 Athlete of the Year. To you. Bob Allen Lane, we bestow this honor. 111 onizconiui FEUCE DODD (low nation Woutheno Gary Donnette Daniels Amist the throng of one of the largest crowds ever to attend the homecoming game. Queen Felice Dodd was crowned by Gib Mitchell at the elaborate halftime. This climaxed a week of voting, excitement and suspense on the Buccaneer campus. The an- noucement of the queen was done by a fanfare played by the Bellflower High School Marching Band. After the crowning, she was escorted to her beautifully decorated Cadillac by John Ravera, Senior class presi- dent with the assistance of Jerry Atkin, Head Yell Leader. She was then driven around the field while the thousands cheered and ap- plauded. The four princesses were: Janice O'Conner, Marcia Williams, Donnette Daniels, and last but not least Wauthena Gary.
