Within this, the Treasure Chest of 1956, we have tried to recapture through artwork, pictures and descriptions, the events of the year most treasured by you. The theme of the Treasure Chest this year is Just Pictures, Not Words. The annual is centered around art to accentuate the theme. As the following pages unfold be- fore your eyes, we hope they will give you memories as everlasting as the universe itself. 10 Dedication Long before any of us appeared on campus last fall, many people were preparing for our arrival. Among these people was our art instructor, Mrs. Huff. For Mrs. Huff, this prepara- tion was only the beginning. Often, during the course of the year, she will be found slaving over posters or projects for one activity or anoiher. When the play season rolls around, Mrs. Huff is usually working on the scenery and decora- tions to insure the success of the production. The seniors are particularly grateful to her for her assistance with decorations for the gradua- tion proceedings, thus making it more memorable. The Christmas pageant, however, is the major project of the year for her. Every year, everyday materials are transformed to fit into the beauty of the Christmas wonderland. Many of her art pupils have been spurred to success through her assistance. In honor of Mrs. Ila Huff, her long service, and many unselfish deeds, we proudly dedicate our annual of 1956. 12 13 SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Burnight BOARD OF SUPERVISORS A. E. Sommer, C. W. Tague, L. D. Donnell, R. R. Utterback, Arthur Kulzer 14 Mr. Charles Kendle PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Enclosed within the covers of the Treasure Chest is a pictorial record of Bellflower Buccaneers' finest year. The Student Body as a group can be justly proud as they view the accomplishments of this 1955-56 school year. A feeling of pride, of satisfaction, and of respect will come to each student as he is reminded graphically of his contribution to this year's successful program. To each and all my personal compliments for a job well done. 15 MR. JENSON MRS. TORRES Boys' Vico Principal Girls' Vice Principal Counsellor Nurse 0 Mrs. Ziskind Librarian Mrs. Burns Library Asst. Sr. Cla££ J4Utory During our freshman year we were under the leadership of Bob Strong. Although we were new to Bellflower High School, our class began the tradition of the freshman assembly. Jerry Sorenson was sophomore class president. During that year we began class sales to raise money for our treasury. In our junior year, for the first time in Bellflower High School’s history, a girl, Janet Weberg, a member of our class, was elected as Student Body President. We selected Olympic Blue as the color of our junior sweaters. Several weeks after the class received their sweaters, we sponsored the Junior Sweater Swing. Vera Kehret served as class president. We chose “Beyond the Stars” as the theme of the Junior- Senior Prom, which was held at Compton Junior College. During our senior year, Chuck Yeyna was our president. We were happy to take over the Senior Priv- ileges bequeathed to us by our predecessors. We received our Senior Rings in October. “Cupid's Capers was the theme of the traditional Sweethearts Ball, sponsored by the senior class. It was a success to all who attended. We selected Catalina Island as the site of Senior Ditch Day. We will go down in school history as being the last class of Bellflower High School to graduate from the Excelsior High School Dis- trict. To climax our high school years, graduation and Baccalaureate services were held in our honor. Although we were out of school, the P.T.A. sponsored an all night party as our last senior activity. 62 junior Cla££ Officer Jerri Olson. Vice-President; Wilba Adcock, Secretory; Sandy Crawford, Senator; Bob Crane, Treasurer; Gary Smith, President; Bill Murray, Senator. Cla J4i tory, This year, the Class of '57 showed more school spirit than ever. As freshmt n, we elected Cldon Morgan as Freshman class president. Also in our freshman year, we p t on an underclass assembly, that was surpassed, perhaps, only by the assembly we put on in our sophomore year during Sophomore Week. As Sophomores, we originated Sophomore Week, and we hope if will become a tradition. Antonette Olivera, our Sophomore class president, did an excellent job on organizing this difficult project. This year, we elected Gary Smith as our class president. We also had a student body officer elected from our class, Jerry Atkin was elected student body Vice President. For our junior sweaters we chose coral sweaters with charcoal emblems. To celebrate the arrival of our sweaters there was the Sweater Swing, which is said to have been one of the best. The Junior-Senior Prom was a complete success, and will be remembered for a long time by all who attended. When we are seniors, we hope the standards we have set will be carried through the coming years. 64 8. Adams, J. Adams, R. Adams, W. Adcock, R. Adkins, C. Atkin, M. Allenbnugh. 8. Anderson J. They have done very well with cake sales and many of the boys went out for sports. One Freshman boy, Earl Coleman made the Varsity football team. They did very well in the March of Dimes as Freshmen classes in the past have done. Another assembly was held in March and the theme was Spring Vacation. ROW ONE: A. Abbey, M. Achterhof, A. Adorns. They take science and math at the same time. 87 cAtklete o the Jear He was born in St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco, California, on March 27, 1938, and was immediately dubbed as “Butch by his father. In 1940 he took a trip to New York and returned in 1941. When World War II broke out, he moved to Oklahoma with his mother. Again he returned to Bellflower, this time in 1944 and started school here. In November of 1945 he moved to Long Beach and enrolled in the Francis B. Willard School. Even while very young, he showed a definite interest in sports and athletic events. In October of 1946 he again returned to Bellflower, entering Woodrow Wilson School, and participated in all the usual athletic events of a boy his age. He moved to Pomona for a year, where he attended Kauffman School. Upon his return in 1950 to Bellflower, he enrolled at F. D. Roosevelt School. His advent into sports was strong there as he participated in touch football, baseball, and track and field events. He still retained his nickname of “Butch. During the summer of 1950 he was catcher on the “Bellflower Imps baseball team, who were runners-up in their league. He won the trophy for his first heat run in the “Soap Box Derby at the Los Angeles track in August of 1951. While at Roosevelt in 1951, he was elected school president for the first term. He also won second prize in the poster contest sponsored by the American Legion. A great deal of his time has been spent in school activities and he has received a great deal of credit for his artistic work as well as his athletic ability. He dropped the name of “Butch when he entered high school and he has participated in many sports here at Bellflower. As a freshman, he participated in Cee football and Cee track. He also competed in the same sports and classifications during his sophomore year. Bee football, Bee basketball, and Bee track were the sports he was in as a junior. In his senior year, he played football and track, in the varsity classification for both sports. He was voted as “All League Halfback and “Back of the Year after the close of the football season this year. He was chosen from all of Bellflower High's athletes on the basis of his sports ability, lead- ership, and scholastic achievements. As you can see, our Athlete of the Year is CHARLES GORDON YEYNA E. Council THE GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girls' Athletic Association, one of Bellflower High's largest clubs, participated in many activities this year other than the regular program. Bellflower sponsored two play- days this past year, one in the winter and one in he summer. The winter event was the third annual district playday, fea- turing Excelsior, Artesia and Bellflower. We also sponsored a league playday in April. Bellflower traveled to Covina to compete in their playday. We also attended the annual G.A.F. Conference, which was held this year in Fillmore. Looking back, we can see that there were some major changes made in the awards system of this organization. The fifth annual G.A.A. Banquet, held in February, featured the presentation of awards and an impressive candle light ceremony, through which the new officers were installed. The Banquet was centered around the theme of Fantasyland. We also sponsored the annual junior high school playday to help acquaint them with Bellflower High. Our year was concluded with the annual breakfast given in honor of the retired G.A.A. Council. c o O-ZCi- Back Row: B. Sanderson, A. Ramirez, R. Sho- waiter. B. Quinlan, R. Brown, K. Jenson, N. Today, there are more than 420 schools participating in this program, of which Bellflower High School, Chapter 417, is one. Any student who maintains a 10 point grade average is eligible for membership. Those who are members for four of six semesters, one in the senior year, became sealbearers and life members of C.S.F. Those who par- ticipate for all eight semesters receive the highest honor of C.S.F., the Phi Beta Kappa Award. The Bellflower Chapter of C.S.F. participates in four field trips per year. Two of these are C.S.F. Conventions, one in the spring and one in the winter. Our spring convention was held at Whittier High School and Whittier College. We also went to see Cinerama Holi- day in January. The last trip was taken near the end of school. Mrs. Scott D. Woodson K. Armstrong R. Benson C. Clough A. Hanson E. Carper N. Butler P.
