The Tigers defeated Dayton in their opener by a score of 21-7, even though Mike King was sidelined with a knee injury in the first quarter. In the following week, the Scott Eagles managed to send the game into overtime but were unable to match a Doug Miller touchdown late in the third extra period. The Tigers were not so fortunate in the succeeding week, which saw an outmanned Bellevue team overcome by class AAA Conner. The ensuing week the Tigers tallied up their third win against just 1 loss with a convincing 28-6 victory over Rich- mond-Madison. Bellevue's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the follow- ing weeks as the Tigers dropped 3 straight, all by the score of 19-7. A final effort by the Tigers to reclaim their dis- trict crown fell short at the hands of the Ludlow Panthers, eliminating Bellevue from the regional tournament for the first time in four years. However, the Tigers managed to salvage their pride in a 37-7 trouncing of archrival Dayton and went on to close out the season at 4- 6. Coaches: First: C. Coleman, F. Bernier, S. V .X i Hard Work Pays Off Along with Coaches Hart and Akers, this year's freshmen squad geared up for the season just in front of them. The young freshmen started the year with rival Dayton, and the win of 12 to 6 was just a premonition of their future. With the Ludlow and Beechwood games nearing, the Tigers practiced vigorously and won both by a wide margin. On the second turn, Dayton's defense proved to be a challengeg however, the Tigers managed to win 13 to 0. With one of their fullbacks injured, Ludlow also could not hold the Tigers from a victory of 35 to 8. The season ended 5 wins and 0 losses, but the championship game with Beechwood remained to se- cure a perfect season. Despite the fact that Beechwood scored a touchdown early in the 1st quarter, the Tigers produced 6 points late in the 2nd quarter. The Tigers, after a halftime speech from Coaches Hart and Akers, came from the locker room ready for action. In the 3rd and 4th quarters, the Tiger defense held Beechwood from scoring, and the of- fense masterfully made a touchdown to end the game 12 to 8. This win secured a perfect season of 6 and 0 which dis- played the work and dedication of both the coaches and the freshmen. 62 0 Freshmen Football E we E S 3 i 1 Q E 3 Q FRESHMEN SCORES BHS OPI 12 Dayton 6 26 Ludlow 6 32 Beechwood 0 13 Dayton 0 35 Ludlow 8 12 Beechwood 8 Coaches Hart, Akers, and the Tiger defen: watch the game with anticipation. Girls Dash To Before their regular season, the girls Victory cross country team went to a Cross Country Camp at Houston Woods, Ohio. At this two day event, the team members met each other, and Coach Stidham started them on their running program. Following the camp, practice continued until the season was finally open. With a team of mostly 7th and 8th graders, Coach Stidham was expect- ing a rebuilding year, however, he was overwhelmed by the girls' superb sea- son. Near the opening of their season, the Tigers conquered AAA Lloyd and AAAA Holmes. Losing to archrival Dayton was disappointing, but the girls chalked up another win over Conner. For an inexperienced team, the girls did exceptionally well at most of the invita- tionals in which they competed. At the regionals, the varsity squad missed 3rd place by only a few points, and the ju- nior varsity came in a spectacular 3rd place. Short Of Runners With Coach Marty Mayer at the helm, the 1982-1983 cross country team seemed to possess everything necessary for a successful season. Coach Mayer was in his third year, and an accom- plished runner himself. There were also new uniforms, and among other things a junior high team for the first year. The Tigers seemed to possess everyth- ing, everything, that is, except a varsity team. Bellevue struggled through most of the season with only 4 varsity runners, with eighth grader Brandt Owens fill- ing in at the critical meets. Even so, the Tigers placed tenth out of a field of 33 teams and 225 runners from 4 states at the Lexington Catholic Invitational, with seniors Hans Herklotz and Rob Rogg taking 15th and 21st places re- spectively. Though this was the best team finish the Tigers could muster, two indivi- duals continually performed well. Rob Rogg and Hans Herklotz opened the season by taking 1st and 2nd places in the Silver Grove meet. Hans placed 3rd and Rob 10th at the Silver Grove Invi- tational, and the two again finished 1st and 2nd in the Highland meet. Although the team failed to qualify for the state championship meet, Hans Herklotz and Rob Rogg qualified as in- dividuals, and out of 150 of the best runners in the state, Hans placed 15th and Rob 29th. Hans Herklotz can't seem to shake this com- petitor. Boys Cross Country ' 69 Good Effort Although the 1982-1983 Girls Varsity basketball team may have posted a win- floss record which was somewhat less than impressive, the Lady Tigers ef- forts did not go entirely to waste. While Bellevue did suffer through 17 defeats, the girls also had their taste of victory, defeating Beechwood and Ludlow twice, along with wins over Silver Grove and Villa Madonna. The Tigers gave Dayton all they could handle in the District Tourna- ment, losing a hard fought game 63-55, with Karen Hurtt being named to the All District Tournament Team for her efforts. This victory led them to the second round where they were defeated by Newport Catholic and became the 35th District runners-up. From here it was on to the Regional Tournament where the Tigers suffered a heartbreaking loss to Lloyd. The team finished the season with a commendable record of 14-14. Besides an outstanding team effort, two of the team's seniors, Steve Crittendon and Doug Miller, recieved many honors for their efforts. Steve was named to the All AW Classic Tournament Team, and Doug was chosen for the 9th Region All Tournament Team, as well as being se- lected Famous Star of the Week. This year's varsity squad definitely showed these characteristics. They took the first step towards a successful year when they attended cheerleading camp in July at Ohio State University. Dur- ing their stay at camp, hours were spent learning cheers to bring back to the Bel- levue crowds. This year cheerleading tryouts were held again for basketball to expand the squad and Shelley Hasse was chosen as a new member. Besides cheering at games, the squad hosted and competed in the 35th District Cheerleading Competition.
