I ,J ,Leee g y t e T inexperienced Tigers Perform Well in Big Games Despite their losing record, the '79-'80 Tigers of Mike Swauger were a force to be reckoned with in Northern Kentucky basketball circles. Even though most of the players were getting their first taste of varsity competition, the Tigers performed surprisingly well in big games. On January 29, the Tigers ventured to Dry Ridge to face the Grant County Braves, who were soaring after a big win over Newport Catholic. Bellevue enjoyed its finest game of the season in stunning Grant County 78 to 72. In the first ever Dayton Invitational, Bellevue placed a strong second, with Doug Schulte and Todd Hardy earning spots on the All-Tournament Team. They nearly upset eventual champion Holy Cross in the Indians own tournament, and they lost a tough battle to district champs Newport in the district tournament. Todd Hardy again made all-tourney at Holy Cross, and John Schulte was named to the All-District Team. Todd was also selected to the Class A All-Region Team. The reserve basketball team, racked with injury after injury, did surprisingly well considering that freshmen were often called upon to fill out the squad. The experience gained by the reserves should strengthen the overall program in the future. Above, right: Coach Starnes and his reserves study the opponents offense.
