Led by a stingy defense and a rugged, ball-control offense, the Bellevue Tigers powered their way to the Class A State Championship. Opening the playoffs against an outmanned Raceland team, the Tigers crushed the Rams 33-O. The game was played on an extremely muddy field which the newspapers aptly dubbed Gilligan's lsland. Despite the conditions, tailback Jon Sutkamp churned out a Bellevue record, rumbling for 322 yards and 5 touchdowns. Top ranked Paintsville was the next opponent to invade Tiger Country. ln a brutal defensive struggle, a second quarter touchdown run by Jon Sutkamp proved to be the only score in the 7-0 victory. Revenge burned in the hearts of the Tigers as they made the trip to Louisville to face Richmond Madison. After a second quarter goal line stand, the Tigers drove 80 yards for the decisive touchdown, a one yard plunge by Jon Sutkamp. The state championship victory over the Purples made the Thanksgiving spent away from home worthwhile. Both coaches and the press recognized the talent of the Tigers on post season all-star teams. Jeff Sprague and Jon Sutkamp were on the N.K.C.A. Top 22 and all-star teams. They were joined on the all-conference team by Rob Robinson, Dave Sandfoss, Ted Pappas, Charlie Sutkamp, and Mike Sutkamp. Jon Sutkamp also received the Marty Kehoe Award, which is given to the area's outstanding player.
