Though the girls were able to play more matches, the boys' team had some close, exciting meetings with rivals Highlands and Dayton. Under rookie coach Beth Druck, the 15 members of the girls' team took to the parking lots and gyms in order to practice when the stadium was swamped with mud. Their six victories proved that this extra effort was indeed worthwhile. With everyone but Senior Wendy Yelton returning, the girls can look forward to more successful seasons in the future. Four experienced seniors led the boys' team to a deceiving 5-4 record this year while having 10 matches rained out. Rookie coach Terry Harris was patient with his team and the weather and was rewarded with their performance in the regional tournament. The doubles team of Mark Culp and Jerry Parrott volleyed their way to the third round where they were defeated by Holmes. In singles competition, Doug Schulte also made it to third round of play but was beaten by eventual state champ Todd Clements. Baseball Team Learns During Brief Season Both bad weather and a lack of team depth played a major part in the 2-12 season of this year's baseball team. After a slow start, Coach Young and the Tigers concentrated on learning the fundamentals and relying on the seniors to spark the team. Their main hope was in Nick Benge, who led the team with exceptional pitching and a batting average of .457. Close games, lost in the final pitches, accounted for several of the Tigers' dissappointments this season though they did defeat Campbell Co. 9-5 and Ludlow 10-3. Special recognition went to Jerry Ftauh and Jeff Combs who both received Honorable-Mention to the All-N.K.A.C. East Division Team.
