Directed by Mr. Dan Davies, AI Capp's Li'I Abner involved members of Drama Club as well as any interested actors or actresses in grades 7 through 12. The play, performed on the nights of March 21 and 22, was received with overwhelming enthusiasm by the school and the community. The club was originally set up to widen students' understanding and appreciation of theater. As a part of it's activities, the club attended several plays at NKU and surrounding schools. By putting on a play such as Li'l Abner, the students not only learned about the ruled and procedures of acting, but they also learned the importance of working together for a common goal. Much time and effort is spent understanding and applying various copy and layout styles and procedures. Yearbooking involves not only taking pictures, but also selling subscriptions and ads, meeting deadlines, and most of all, learning to work with other people. John Schulte and Mark Culp served the class's needs as Copy and Layout Editors. The responsibility of handling all business matters and bookkeeping went to Business Manager Jenny Diesman. Lora Hasse and Paula Kappes covered the many student activities occurring throughout the year. The action-packed Sports Section was created by Rob Robinson and Kelley Maher. The Classes Section, both large and complicated, kept Sue Johnson and Joy Youtsey quite busy. Laura Koehler and Greg Leopold provided pictures and information on the Faculty and Honors Sections. The unique Seniors Section was developed by Laurie Schuett and Jon Sutkamp. Jeff Sprague and Marilyn Kappesser created the imaginative Ad Section. The Spirit Scholarship Fund, traditionally associated solely with Student Council, became a school wide project. Student Council still contributed heavily to the cause with the Mr, and Mrs. Santa Claus Contest, won by Mr. Stidham and Ms. Winkler. Sadie Hawkins Day, held in conjunction with B-Club, featured a mass wedding ceremony of over forty Dogpatch couples. Unfortunately, the Sadie Hawkins dance was cancelled due to 8 inches of unexpected snow. In April, five pro athletes visited Bellevue at the request of Student Council, to promote the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. These athletes met several of Bellevue's best athletes in a variety of fun-oriented contests. Student Council also continued its well-established projects. Homecoming, complete with floats, banners, and a dance, was a resounding success. The candy sale, held in February, served as Student Council's chief fund raiser. First year head coach Fred Bernier's new style of offense was significant in the Tigers' scoring 288 points during the regular season. On August 17, cross-town rival Dayton came into Gilligan stadium with high hopes of defeating Bellevue. Dayton's dream of upsetting Bellevue was soon turned into a nightmare as the Tigers handily defeated them 23-6. ln the following three games, the Tigers winning streak continued to grow as they chalked up wins over Scott, Covington Catholic, and Paris. Through the next two weeks the Tigers suffered a mid-season slump, losing to Richmond Madison and Campbell County. After a slow start, Coach Young and the Tigers concentrated on learning the fundamentals and relying on the seniors to spark the team. Their main hope was in Nick Benge, who led the team with exceptional pitching and a batting average of .457. Close games, lost in the final pitches, accounted for several of the Tigers' dissappointments this season though they did defeat Campbell Co. 9-5 and Ludlow 10-3. Special recognition went to Jerry Ftauh and Jeff Combs who both received Honorable-Mention to the All-N.K.A.C. East Division Team. Though the girls were able to play more matches, the boys' team had some close, exciting meetings with rivals Highlands and Dayton. Under rookie coach Beth Druck, the 15 members of the girls' team took to the parking lots and gyms in order to practice when the stadium was swamped with mud. Their six victories proved that this extra effort was indeed worthwhile. With everyone but Senior Wendy Yelton returning, the girls can look forward to more successful seasons in the future. Four experienced seniors led the boys' team to a deceiving 5-4 record this year while having 10 matches rained out. Rookie coach Terry Harris was patient with his team and the weather and was rewarded with their performance in the regional tournament. The doubles team of Mark Culp and Jerry Parrott volleyed their way to the third round where they were defeated by Holmes. In singles competition, Doug Schulte also made it to third round of play but was beaten by eventual state champ Todd Clements. Although the club raises no money, the group lends its time and services to projects throughout the year. The year ended with a banquet at the Quality Inn. Newly elected members were inducted through a symbolic candlelight ceremony. Mrs. Margaret Smith was the guest speaker. Members are elected by teachers on the basis of leadership, scholarship, service, and character. These students portray all of these qualities. This year Honor Society was organized through the efforts of new sponsor Mr. Harris. Each of us felt a paradox of emotions: A feeling of loneliness and inexperience as well as a feeling of security in knowing that the older kids would look after us. Our faculty? We'll always remember the embarrassment of Health class when Mr. Vorhees made us sing the ever popular Dixie, Mr. Holechko's English classes, and Mr. Stidham's way of cheering up a class with a crazy joke in Biology. Who could forget Miss Gatlin teaching Spanish with a southern accent or Mrs. Royalty standing on ten Algebra books and touching her palms to the floor? These seemingly insignificant events are now cherished memories. They helped us to form our ideas, made us smile, and led us to develop everlasting friendships. We remember the excitement of getting out of freshman sports and getting to practice with our idols, the varsity. We experienced the thrill of answering a difficult question in Mrs. Grim's or Mrs. Moran'S English class, much to the surprise of the juniors and Seniors. Sophomore year was learning to mingle with the older crowd, Ms. Giltner's friendliness and helpfulness with class projects, trying to laugh at Mr. F'toyalty's corny jokes in Geometry, as well as trying not to laugh when he smeared colored chalk all over his face. We met new people and made new friends. Our class began to grow closer so that one day we would be able to leave B.H.S. not as a bunch of different cliques, but as one strong unit that could go out and attain our varied goals. Junior year was the excitement of picking class colors, flower, and mottog the nervous chatter of the students' clever ideas for the prom, and the sense of satisfaction seeing it all turn out so elegantly. We will never forget Ms. Winkler for all her guidance and understanding of our ideas. Mrs. Grim's and Mrs. Brindle's experience certainly helped out in our making all the right choices. We fondly recall Mr. Davies providing a fresh approach to English with his extraordinary wit and humor, Mr. Brennan giving everyone a chance to work the popcorn machine, and Mr. Kohler explaining history with his hands. We loved those days and we were learning to better accept whatever challenges life might present. Although we wanted those days to last forever, we knew they couldn't. Senior Year was the responsibility of being the oldest in the school, the pride of walking through the senior door, the awareness of finding yourself through one of Mr. Brennan's self-tests, and the excitement of being measured for caps and gowns. Of course, we experienced our share of anxiety, too. We doubted whether we could change modest Grandview gym into a Fantasy in Frost. But we changed it. . We wondered whether we could lead the clubs, teams, and organizations of the school to a successful year. But we led them. We worried that we wouldn't be able to handle the natural insecurity of untried youth preparing to embark on a new life. But we handled that problem too.
