This com- ment has been heard innumerable times from Freshmen who are bowed down by that burdening thought. But, oddly, they will go through it all and will fully enjoy the fascinating experiences and the indispensable knowledge gained through the grammar and literature departments of the heretofore abhorred llnglish. It is not uncommon in the digniiied corridors of Bellevue High School to hear some avid Shakespearean student cry in the agony of ex- amination, O, vengeance! or sigh with bovine Visage in the throes of infatuation, Good-night, good-night! Part- ing is such sweet sorrow ln XVhat more could be expected of high school English students? l 1 6 HUGH Q. REBER1- ISABEL RIBLETT Latin KK OMO esta Vd. F Comment allez-vous aujourd, hui l Arma virumque cano. From the potpourri of prodigious phrases emanating from the class rooms in Bellevue High School, the as- tounded listener gathers the knowledge that the Foreign Languages Department is putting the students through the prescribed paces in Spanish, French, and Latin. Under the directions of the able instructors, who strive constantly to create new methods for maintaining the interest of the classes at the highest possible level, the novitiate comes readily to appreciate the historical background of his native tongue and to delight in the cultural values gained from studying one or more languages other than his own. l l 7 Latin I NINA JOHNSTON Spanish BETTY LEYDA Prem ch FOREIGN LANGUAGES Wm 3. JONAH, according to record, was to make Biblical history in Nineveh. Trying to sidestep, he landed in a Whale of a story. Modern students, calling for fish yarns to escape recitations in Bellevue High School, swallowed the instructor's piscatorial presentations and found themselves hooked on history. Page Mr. Shope! Jonah was cast out. The students were downcast. So will social studies confound those who would rather run than read. But the wise found in problems of democracy, history, and commercial law admirable guides to their run- ning. 18 LILLIAN A. Cox LOUISE GRABB12 Shorthand Typewriting HE clicking of typewriters, the chatter of add- ing machines, and the whisperings of pens and pencils on paper introduce the Commercial Department of Bellevue High School. Do you aspire to become a stenographer, a secretary, an accountant, or an auditor? Here is the way to that possibility. Business English, commercial lavv, com- mercial geography, office practice, bookkeeping, shorthand, typevvriting, and business training are in the curriculum. As the subjects frequently are the last of the formal edu- cation for many students, careful training is given. The Commercial Department has developed rapidly in the last few years. Its growth, in fact, has exceeded that of any other department in the high school. Present facilities have been taxed by the enrollment, but the school heads unquestionably will keep pace with demands. 19 l MARY WooDs1DE Office Secreiary JANE BREITWIESER Office Secretary COMMERCIAL SUBJ ECTS GEORGE WALLACE W. Reinforced by new musicians to reach a total of sixty-three members, the organization, under the baton of Robert H. Ruthart, enjoyed another success- ful year. Besides its traditional duties in connection with chapel, plays, and entertainments, the orchestra gave several concerts, and, by virtue of its superi- ority in the rendition of the classical, it achieved the distinction of being chosen as host for the All-lVestern Pennsylvania District Orchestra, assembled here in December. VVith a will to win, the team played a great brand of ball. All through the first quarter Bellevue was held on even par with their foe, East McKeesport, but with the start of the second quarter the Red and Black forged ahead rapidly. The cooperative spirit of the boys helped largely in Htuelcing away this game. 76 PLAY-OFFS BELLEVUE DEF EATED RABBING the slim end of a 37-25 score, the Red and Black were conquered by a formidable foe from Burgettstown. They needed no alibi 5 they were beaten by a team which possessed the spirit, determination, and better all around playing. Burgettstown started the game with a bang. They quickly tlooded the Bellevue basket With a torrent of shots which proved effective. The score speedily ran up until it stood 24-12 at the half. Bellevue at first could not cope with this attack, but with the start I . Ludwig of the second half they rallied, gamely at- Byers tempting a comeback. Their thirteen points were of no avail, however, as Burgettstown ran up a similar number during this half. The game ended with Bellevue still in ar- rears. Though defeated in the tinals, Bellevue High, for the two playoff games they won, re- ceived two new basketballs to place in the trophy CZISC. In this way Bellevue ended an excellent season of basketball, and Coach Zun- del now looks forward to an even more suc- cessful year. A girl who essayed a jack-knife. from Bellevue High's new diving board hit the deep blue pool, full length and face down. Much laugh- ter! Another freshman attempted a swan dive. She too Hopped and smacked the water mightily. But before long these same girls were reported diving in fine style, and the sounds of merriment thereafter were those of sheer delight from the increasing proficiency in the sport. To Miss Seldon goes the credit for the excellent coaching of the girls in the art of swimming. Novices were taught fundamental principles and were introduced to the back-stroke, side-stroke, dog-paddle, and other features. Besides the regular periods for instruction, extra classes were instituted for girls who wished to further their abilities. 81 ID you ever try rope-jumping while virtually sitting down? If you haven't, take a whirl. You'll be surprised how good a seat will look. Once you have mastered the stunt, y0u'll appreciate the proficiency acquired by the girls in their gym classes. Trick rope-jumping is an additional accomplishment, and the girls can sling a wicked rope. The girls played little soccer this year, but were out for several practice sessions. In their lavender gym suits, they braved chill winds and mud, at times, to follow the ball. ROPE JUMPING and SOCCER 82 NE, TVVO, THREE! Heel, toe, heel! Right, left, right! One, two, three l So goes the count for folk dancing. Vtfhy? Vtfell, we suspect that it's to put the girls in trim for the public address dances. Grace increases chances for hits at the Senior Farewell, you know. VVhen Spring fever strikes, the girls trot forth in track attire. Races chase the seasonal lassitude. Rounding into athletic condition, the girls, in a few days, are competing earnestly. FOLK DANCING and TRACK 83 ll OUR SERVEW Sounds like tennis, but it's volleyball. The idea is to put the ball over the net. Hands only are used. Too often, the ball falls on the Wrong side. This year, inter-class games were played after school with fun for every body. Although the school has no courts, tennis is popular with the girls of Belle- vue High. They like the HY courts. You guessed itg the girls beat the boys there. Qh, well, you can always go to the movies, boys. VOLLEYBALL and TENNIS ' 84 HE new basketball rules bothered the girls a bit, but they've mastered them. That caused Merce Stern a lot of trouble, but The Mummy and the Mumps gave the audience a heap of enjoyment. The comedy revolved around a mummy case and a case of mumps in a school for young ladies. Clever dialogue and excellent acting made the production by the January graduating class a success. Cn April thirtieth, the class of June came through in fine style with The Whole Town's Talking .
