It is a part of every subject taught, and it reaches into every activity of the school. Furthermore, it extends into the life of the student as a means of help- ing him to a greater power of self-expression. linglish furnishes an incentive toward more effective writing, it provides a reasonable command of the spoken language, and it guides in the selecting of books for pleasure and instruction. The Department strives to awaken in the stu- dent's mind an appreciation of the genius of a people widely different from his own. It tries to create a cultural, historical, and human background which will lead to better international understanding.
