Here he enjoyed his grotesque and weird dances, hunted with skillful bow and arrow, and glided swiftly on the river in his birch-bark canoe. The advance of the pioneers into western forests was often made less hazardous through the power and influence of a noble chieftain, who headed the tribe of the Delawares.
