Fellow Students: As we, the COMET staff, present your T959 yearbook, we look back on a year of many impressions f hope that we were doing the right thing, despair when we failed to do the job, anxiety when the deadlines came, and complete relief and happiness when they passed. We hope that as you look through your yearbook you will look back and remember - the games, the dances, the ceremonies, and the many activities you have shared with your friends. Classes, teachers, and homework come back as a beacon toward what you will accomplish in the future. Bellevue High School has done much for us and we, the staff, hope to return the favor, although in small proportion, and to picture life at BHS as it really is. We hope that looking into this yearbook will give you a glimpse into past activities and into your future as an alumnus of Bellevue High School. Here is your book. Enioy it as we have. THE COMET STAFF Janet Strommer, Editor Y H-wr.-f,..im ACADEMIC The academic side of school is reflected in the study hall where students prepare their assignments and review their daily work. The Board of Education Guides School Activities The rise of the democratic state and republican government has added increased importance to the purpose and functions of education and public schools. Indeed, the education, literarcy, and enlightenment of the citizenry has been held of supreme importance. To advance these high purposes of citizenship education in Ohio, the State Con- stitution makes the establishment of free public schools mandatory. Under that law the State Board of Education was created as a part of the free public school system and was made the legal activating agent of the State Superintendent of Schools The Bellevue Board ot Education is elected by the voters of the local school district and is responsible to both the local voters and the state Its conduct is strictly governed by the state statutes As an involuntary division of the state the Bellevue Board of Education is charged with the duties of providing and maintaining tree public schools in Bellevue The members of the Board of Education for 19581959 were Dr F D Crosby Mrs Alma Reitz Secretary Mr Harland Erf M A J Kistler M Harold Detlefsen and Mr Richard P Roush Z .1 7 MR JACK HETER MR E S GLASGO The High School Administration The high school administration guides our school and keeps the students on the road toward becoming responsible citizens With the teaching staff it seeks to develop every student according to his ability for personal realization of a good life and for effective employment school and through conferences with teachers and students works at maintaining a first class school Mr .lack Heter assistant principal helps Mr Glasgo with daily problems and is rarely too busy to take an extra assignment or counsel students However the work of these persons could not be accomplished without the help of Mary Lou Sauber Marilyn Mitchell Dawley Brown Jane Chrlstman and Virginia Frankenfield who keep the offices running smoothly 8 Q C . Present The Thread That Runs So True The Senior Class presented the play, The Thread That Runs So True to a capacity crowd on May 14 and 'l5. Miss Mary Leininger was director of the play with Marilyn Mitchell and Dave Ball assisting as student directors. The play opened with Jesse Stuart, a grade school teacher in a rural school in the mountains of Kentucky, and Don Conway, one of his pupils, open- ing the school and preparing for the first day's work. Soon the pupils began to arrive and Mr. Stuart met Guy Hawkins, the school bully, with whom he later has a showdown. In his struggle to keep Lonesome School open, Mr. Stuart met opposition from the school board. A fight between Mr. Stuart and Guy Hawkins during the school board meeting resulted in a decision to close the school. In a desperate attempt to keep the school open, Mr. Stuart entered a team against Landsburgh High School which had been the scholastic champion for years. Lonesome won the contest and this resulted in a decision not only to keep the school open, but to build a new consolidated school. This year for the first time some of the parts were double cast so that more of the seniors could par- ticipate in the play. One student played the part for the matinee and the other for the night program. The first grade which consisted of Janet Huss, Ronald Rundt, and Karen Edwards, receives instructions from Miss Mary Leininger. 40 Jesse Stuart John Conway Don Conway Bertha Conway Varda Conway Burt Eastman Bull Coffee Naomu Deane Guy Hawktns Budge Waters Bully Leonard Snookte Baylor Ovo Saylors Peter Snaggers Robun Baylor Xema Potters CAST School board members hold a specnal meettng In Lonesome School Board members are Carol Bumb Judy Boyer and Mark Tobun Susan Hoch restrauns Jack Hammersmith 0 he becomes angry wtth Ernest Teturuck over the condntuon of the school Jack Hammersmnth Ernest Teturuck Robert Taylor Judy Boyer Kntty Lepley Janet Strommer Mark Tobnn Olen Crowe Mnchael Muller Susan Hoch Ronald Rundt Ernest Becksteln Larry Frederlck Ball Schaefer Ertc Johnson Duck Mowery Ton: Hasselbach Judy Walker Ka ren Shufelt Leonora Maddox Charlene DeLuca Jenny Jarvns Munnte Frome Edith Hanks Grandma Bunnon Aunt Eftne Uncle Amos Mae Woods va Eleanor Celeste Nancy Cochran Janet Huss Nma Mntchell Jenny Ylngltng Karen Edwards Carol Bumb Denms Enderle Gloria Swartz Suzanne Weekly Barbara Lumber Margo Bnllnard Barbara Ferry Pat Norman Peggy Kasuga Altce Reynolds Students of Lonesome School take tnme out for a game durnng recess 41 . Junior Wins Vocabulary And Spelling Downs This March, David Brown became the first boy to win both the vocabulary and spelling downs. David also became the first boy to win the spelling down for two consecutive years. The only other two- time winner of the contest was Nan Yundt who won in both her junior and senior years. David, Guy Bertisch, and Clair Mills are the only other boys to obtain the titleg while Charlene Radkey holds the distinction of being the only freshman to win the contest. Barbara Freeman, also a iunior, was the runner-up in the spelling down. impunity was the word which David defined correctly to win the vocabulary down when neither Joe Briehl nor Toni Hasselbach were able to come up with the correct definition. The word increment claimed one-half of the 26 contestants who entered this year.
