Sym- bolic of this theme is the use of the seal of BHS on the Comet cover. In the Scrap- book, informality is the trend in both Words and pictures. With these We have recorded the highlights of the year. JOHN LEPLEY President Whose homeroom collected enough tax stamps to earn a popcorn treat? Collecting tax stamps was one method which the Student Council employed to earn money during the year. This money was used to improve the stage lighting. The income from the sale of small fire ex- tinguishers purchased a Whirlpool bath . This whirlpool bath is to be available both to the school and to the local hospital. The Student Council also successfully took charge of the annual Homecoming events. At the beginning of the year each home- room elected a member to represent it at the Council meeting every Wednesday. These members have helped to decide upon and carry out the projects: J. We're leaving BHS, our realm of happiness, We go now with a sigh. But long will we recall our days at Bellevue High. Our Alma Mater dear held friendships all so near, But now we say goodbye. God, guide us in our days away from Bellevue High. To lead us forward, blue and white we chose. We'1l fight for freedom, our symbol is the rose. The higher we rise, the better the view, Our motto will see us through. So, BHS, farewell, your praises we will tell, As on to fame we Hy. The class of '54 is leaving Bellevue High. JL lwlrl, The Cinderella story came true. A wishing Well, murals of the pretty maid, and a pump- kin coach brought to life the Well-known tale of Cinderella at the Junior-Senior prom on April 30. The modern Cinder- ellas and their Prince Charm- ings danced to the music of Ernie Duffield and his orches- tra from nine until midnight. A terrace with its wishing Well and stone path attracted much attention. At the back of the auditorium was Cinder- ella's pumpkin coach colored in red and silver. Above the orchestra was a giant clock pointing to the hour of mid- night to remind the Cinder- ellas of their curfew. Reigning over Cinderella's ball were Helen Foos, senior queen, and Joan Helber, jun- ior queen. The invitations and dance program committee was headed by Thelma Joseph and George Rudd. Publicity was handled by Pat Ellison and Clare Mills. Johnny Irons, erncee, Was in charge of enter- tainment. Martha Palmer di- rected the refreshment com- mittee. Obtaining the dance band was supervised by Dave Burke. Louise Foos was re- sponsible for decorations. 46' Pfwqlzanr, BELLEVUE HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM Bellevue, Ohio SUNDAY EVENING, MAY 23rd, 1954 8: 00 P.M. This scheme was brought to a halt when Johnny Lepley, as the Secret Service agent, intervened. Barry confessed to all, but the production was brought to an exciting climax when a Hollywood producer arrived and offered to produce the fabulous story on the screen. .' P11114 Not one, but two plays! On Dec. 18 the Speech classes presented their part of the an- nual Christmas program. Two plays had been rehearsed under the direction of Miss Esther Schachtele. In It Might Be St. Nick Mr. Nicholas, played by Lloyd Ad- ams, stopped by the Wyath home on Christmas Eve. In the course of his visit, he solved many of the family problems. Others in the cast Were: Jean Swenson, Bill Monk, Bruce Meyer, Sally Harpster, DeLee Thompson, Maureen Moran, Sonia Mesnard, and Bob Hart. Sonia Strayer was student director. Chronic disorders affected the younger members of the Weems family without warning in the second production Almost An Angel? No one of them wanted to play the part of an angel in the church Christmas pageant. The cast included: Jan Koechley, Tony Straziuso, Wilma Geisler, Molly Furlong, Dave Vogel, Bill Gaertner, and Curtis Crews. The student director was Helen Foos. 6 Qancc, 'Christmas in Heaven' might be the nearest youlll get to the Prom- ised Land. So stated an announcement ad- vertising the Y-Teen Christmas Formal. The girls really worked to transform the BHS auditorium into a dreamy heaven. Dancing to the music of Rog Phillips' band was a treat which about a hundred couples enjoyed. Santa Claus arrived and distrib- uted humorous gifts to some of the couples. Mr. John Everson sang three Christmas songs, and Ed Roberts entertained with trumpet solos. Roger Miller and DeLee Thomp- son reigned as King and Queen of Good Will during the evening. fnncclzt Barwl How do they manage to keep in step and play an instrument at the same time? The intricate formations and snappy step of the BHS Marching Band have proved fascinating to the spectators at the football games as they watched the half-time shows. Mr. Corbett, who is always looking for new things to keep the band on top, has just added a pre- cision marching group called the Indian Maids. They will march in front of the band at football games and parades. Doing fancy steps, they will help to entertain during the half at basketball games. At the climax of the season, the NOL Band Festival was held in Bellevue with Willard, Bucyrus, Upper Sandusky, and Bellevue participating. In the afternoon parade Dick Heyman proudly led the BHS band down Main Street to the music of the ever popular Darktown Strutter's Ball. The special features of the evening concert were Fin1andia and Stars and Stripes Forever. After the concert the visitors were invited to stay' for a dance. Music was provided by the BHS Dance Band. ' The yearly Symphonic Band Concert, presented on April 2, was an unmistak- able success. This concert was heard by the largest and most receptive audience in attendance since Mr. Corbett has been director. Konami and. OBOE-J. Langwell. FLUTES-M. Cummins, J. Swenson, D Frost, A. Link, L. A huge crowd jammed the bleachers at Harmon Field on October 16 for the Home- coming game between Shelby and Bellevue. The crowning events which took place before the game were as interesting to some as the game itself. Arriving first in shiny converti- bles were three smiling underclassmen at- tendants: Beverly Hart, freshmang Vicki Stoll, sophomoreg and Nan Yundt, junior. They were quickly claimed by Barry Fiala, Bob -Creech, and Larry Ocker, escorts. Next came Helen Foos and Hazel Bellamy, senior attendants, who were escorted by Jere Ste- phenson and Bob Baldwin. At last! A fanfare was played by the Bellevue High Marching Band's trumpeteers, and her majesty Queen Janet Koechley came on to the field in the shiniest of all converti- bles. Our 1953 queen was escorted by Roger Miller. Also in the car with Janet were Marygrace Burke, fiower girl, and David Ruffing, crown bearer, who completed the royal party. Janet was crowned by Johnny Lepley, co-captain, and Bob Hart, co-captain, presented her with a large bouquet of mums. After the ceremonies and a royal cheer led by the cheerleaders, the court retired to the sidelines to watch a thrilling game. Later the queen and her attendants, arrayed in shim- mering formals, presided at a Homecoming Dance held in their honor. In keeping with tradition, the first dance of the evening was reserved for the Court. Janet and Roger be- gan the dancing and then were joined by the attendants and their escorts. almllq. Squad trounced the Gibsonburg Golden Bears, 30-13, at Harmon Field on theubalmy night of September 18. Rapid Robertn Hart's sixty-three yard TD run highlighted the Redmenls scoring. BELLEVUE 63-CRESTLINE 6 The Redmen won their first NOL encounter on September 25 by blasting the -Crestline Bulldogs, 63-6, at Crestline. The locals took turns at scoring against the undersized team as Hart, Haynes, and Lepley each' scored twice. This was Bellevue's final game with Crestline who has withdrawn from the NOL. BELLEVUE 20--UPPER SANDUSKY 14 The BHS gridders made it three in a row on October 2 by upsetting Upper Sandusky, 20-14, in the first really tough game of the season. Again Hart scored twice while John Lepley hit pay dirt once. The Rams failed to overcome a strong BHS lead in the second half. BELLEVUE 40-NORWALK 7 The Redmen footballers snowed under the hapless Norwalk Truckers by a score of 40-7 at Harmon Field on October 9. Bellevue's offensive punch was provided by Dick Moyer who racked up two TD'sg and Eisenhauer, Haynes, Lepley, and Roberts who each crossed the goal line once. BELLEVUE 10 - SHELBY 14 The Redmen Came out on the short end of a 14-10 battle with Shelby on October 16. The Whippets put the Homecoming thriller on ice in the waning moments of the game with a thirty-nine yard touchdown run. Al- though they lost the contest, the B.H.S. squad played one of the best football games of their career. John Lepley proved his ability by scoring all the points for the Red- men. BELLEVUE 26-GALION 0 The Redmen returned to the winning way by defeating Galion, 26-0, on October 26 at Galion. Moyer, Beckman, Lepley, and Rob- erts each scored for a total of twenty-one points in the fourth quarter. BELLEVUE 21-BUCYRUS 19 Dad's Night, October 30, found the BHS eleven victorious over Bucyrus, 21-19, in a well-fought battle. Ed Roberts switched to a back position and succeeded in scoring twice while Haynes crossed the goal line after catching a Lepley pass. BELLEVUE 21-WILLARD 0 The Redmen rolled over Willard, 21-0, on November 6 on a windy, snow-swept Harmon Field. This gave them undisputed second place in the NOL. Eisenhower, Lepley, and Moyer added points to the scoring for Belle- vue. BELLEVUE 6-PORT CLINTON .12 Friday the thirteenth proved unlucky for the 1953 BHS gridders as they fell before a spirited Port Clinton eleven. Although he had scored previously, Lepley's two-yard pass in the final minutes failed and thus pro- vided the Porters with a victory. Lepley, No. 38, races around end during the Shelby game.
