I was sent to this planet from my home to investigate strange cosmic vibrations reaching Mars from your planet, Earth. You've probably never heard of my visit to your school because, you see, this was a very hushed-up affair. I traced the vibrations to BHS and learned that they were caused by the student enthusiasm in educational and extracurricular activities. X-34, my chief, then commanded me to prepare a detailed report on the activities and the students who caused the cosmic vibrations. My mission was to find out as much as possible about the BHS studentsg whether you were friendly or unfriendly, bar- baric or reasonably civilized, and so forth. Before I present this report to my commander, I think it is only fair to give you a preview of my findings. I hope you will find this a full, fascinating report on the things that went on in your school. f': x 'Og I CUNTROL TABLE 29... Qalicatcbn, This report is dedicated to- Dr. H. K. Bell Boys Student Conductor Director Duane Corbett Eugene Wynbissinger A tl, , i ' , rm T' sk I . 1 7 ' . ' fl e 'f '. Q, Conant Bancl Under the able direction of Duane Corbett, the BHS band this year had a most success- ful season. The red and white marching unit was led by majorette, Jo Sberna. Many unus- ual marching formations were inaugurated this year which consisted of precision drill combined with dance steps and fancy march- ing. This 8l-piece band entertained at the football contests and the programs were re- ceived with hearty ovations from the specta- i'OI'S. The band also contributed much toward making the annual concert a success. It was at this entertainment that Eugene Wynbissin- ger made his appearance as student director. He ably directed the band selections Gay Vienna March and Waves of the Danube . The high school's own dance band, The Bell Boys, played for the dance following the concert. Previously the band had played at the athletic banquet. Duane Corbett handles the piano for the orchestra with George Wood- ard on trumpet, David Stedman, drum, Dick Edwards, alto sax, and Michael Straziuso on the tenor sax. Mr. Corbett makes all arrange- ments for the young musicians. Erma Buffington made square roots seem easy. A graduate of Wittenberg College with a B.A. degree, she now teaches math and commercial subjects. Stepping into Carmen Conte's classroom, I was introduced to the Pan-American Union Flags, Miss Conte, who hails from Michigan, graduated from Northern Mich- igan College with a B.A. degree, and teaches Spanish and history at BHS. Elizabeth Foulk, English tea- cher, was surrounded by best sell- ers when I arrived at her room. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BS. degree and from Ohio State Uni- versity with a M.A. degree. Music flowing from the band room drew me in that direction where l met the band director, Duane Corbett. He is a graduate of West Liberty State College with a BA. degree and University ot Michigan with a M.M. degree. Next l went to see Mary Cooper who pointed out the United States on the map and told me some of its history. Miss Cooper, who teaches social studies, has a B.A. from Ohio University and a MA. from Ohio State University. Next l dropped in on Arch Krumm, a graduate of Capital University with a B.S. degree. He explained to me, as he does to his music students, the methods of raising and lowering a musical note. l then visited Richard Mac- Nealy, physical education direc- tor, who instructed me in calis- thenics. He received a B.S. de- gree from Michigan College of Education. A room of books drew my at- tention next. There I was intro- duced to the librarian, Viola Mc- Combs, who graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin. Entering the Commercial Arts room, l overheard Rolland Morris, a graduate of Kent State Univer- sity with a B.S. degree, explain- ing the use of the mimeograph machine to his office practice students. Playing volleyball became fun for me when Genevieve Pendleton explained how to bat the ball over the net. Mrs. Pendleton, who teaches girls' physical education, received a BS, degree from Bowl- ing Green State University and a M.A. degree from Ohio State University. Esther Schachtele recorded my voice on a miraculous machine called a wire recorder. A grad- uate of Ohio University with a B.S, degree, she now teaches English and speech. Stepping into Jan Schaffer's class room, I was invited to view many things under a microscope and a magnifying glass. Mr. Schaffer, who hails from Bowling Green State University with a BS. degree, teaches science courses. I then went to see Lowell Shaffer, who pointed out to me how to handle a football correct- ly. He holds a B.S. degree from Ohio Northern and, besides be- ing football coach, teaches biol- ogy. Pauline Shaffer was surround- ed by dress material upon which she was sewing when I arrived at her room. She graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. degree and now teaches Home Economics at BHS. I dropped in on Glenn Spang- ler, a graduate of Ohio State University with a B.S. degree. He explained to me, as he does to many in his industrial arts class, the workings of, what seemed to me, a complicated machine which he called an electric drill. A room filled with the rhyth- mic clicking of typewriters drew my attention next. There I met Robert Steinbaugh, commercial subjects teacher, who graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. and a M.A. degree. A graduate of Ohio State Uni- versity with a B.A. degree and from the University of Michigan with a M.S. degree, Herbert Wolfe, science teacher, took time out to show me some of his fossils. The next department I visited was wood shop, where Cleo Yoder is the teacher. After showing me how to work an electric saw, he told me that he is a grad- uate of Bowling Green State University with a B.S. degree. I visited Ivan Wilhelm, bas- ketball coach, who showed me how to throw a basketball through a hoop. He graduated with a B.S. degree from Tulane University and now teaches math. Glancing quickly through its pages, I became so excited that I shouted Spectral and roared off into the publication room. There I found a complete source of information for my report. I learned so much about the students, their problems, and their opportunities in the Earth schools that by the time I returned to my desk, I was able to turn in a full report of the things going on here. The Dial received a rating of ExceIIent in a judging conducted by the faculty of the Department of Journalism of the Bowling Green State University. A unique feature of this publication is that it does not have one editor-in-chief but is produced by a rotating group of editors. 46 mm Siu!! The unusual plot took place at the Cloisters, an exclusive mental institution. Mrs. Savage, a fantastically wealthly widow, is brought to the Cloisters by her three socially prominent step- children. At the institution Mrs. Savage meets some of the more nor- mal patients who accept her imme- diately as a friend. When the Savages discover their stepmother has hidden the family wealth, they return to the Cloisters. Amid the confusion, the bonds are found, then lost again, and finally recovered. Knunccl Each Tuesday during the fifth period, a member from each homeroom went to the conference room. Upon investigation, I found they went to a Student Council meeting, simi- lar to our Space Council that consists of a member from each planet. At these meetings they planned ways of bettering the school, dis- cussed school problems, and originated pro- jects. Some of the members attended a meeting of the Audio Visual Directors in Akron so they might examine new equipment for the school. This year, by collecting sales tax stamps, the club purchased a new basketball score- board. They also furnished large posters bearing each player's name and number so that the players could be identified while playing on the gym floor. All the Homecoming events were sponsored by this group, along with various other yearly accomplishments. To better the appearance of the school, they formed a speedy picker- up game whereby the students were to see how short they could cut the life of a scrap of paper lying on the floor. The council also de- cided on diplomas for graduation and set up a system for future cheerleaders to select their captain. But before l put it back on the shelf for an- other year, there are a few odds and ends to clear up. Under the guidance of Coach Ivan Wilhelm, who encountered his first coaching assignment with the BHS cagers, the Redmen succeeded in capturing a part of the NOL title again this year when they tied with Bucy- rus and Shelby for first place. ln the individ- ual scoring, Jim Windsor broke the school scoring mark when he netted 32 points in the Norwalk game. Out of the nine games they had scheduled, the boys won eight victories with only one loss. The freshmen season began by trampling over Tiffin, Sandusky, and Port Clinton. The fourth game with Tiffin proved to be the only unlucky one, because after this defeat the team won all the remaining five games. The team was coached by Lowell Shaffer. After a preliminary l elimination by the school faculty, new cheerleaders were chosen by the stu- dent body. The boys are back again after three years of absence from this activity. There will be a reserve cheerleading team also, with the elec- tion of Vicki Stoll, Rose- mary Groff, and Ursula Zobec. After being able to swim twenty-two pool lengths above water, two body lengths under water, and stay afloat one minute, these future life guards then learned forms of rescues, releases and approaches, plus artificial res- piration. Finally, having passed a written test, they were granted life saving certificates and emblems. ln the field of track, the BHS tracksters won the Northern Ohio League track meet at Willard by compiling a total of 853A points. lt was the first time the team has won a league track meet. Bob Hart set a new league record for the broad jump with a dis- tance of 20 feet, five and one- fourth inches. Hart placed first in broad jump, l00 yd. dash and 220 yd. dash, Wind- sor was lst in high jump and 3rd in high hurdles, Moyer was first in high jump and 2nd in broad jump, Frisch placed first in 440, Moore was 2nd in 440, Schueler was 2nd in pole vault, Nobles came in 2nd in 880 yd. run and Hart, Roberts, Beckman and Baldwin won the two lap relay. On different noons during the week I often heard what sounded like rather feminine yells coming from the gym and when I looked in, I received a big startle for I saw earth-women participating in games which I thought only earth-men did. After talking with their commander, Mrs. Pendleton, l learned they were participating in Intramurals games. When o girl earns 80 points, she is eligible to become a member of the G. A. A., Girls Athletic Association. Then when she earns 250 points she gets a big B . In December they sponsored a Volleyball Sports Day, with Fremont, Norwalk, Willard, Sandusky and Bellevue participating. Their first project this year was sponsoring the an- nual snake dance to open the football season. I rushed over to the field to learn about snake dances: to see footballs falling from the sky, and then practically torn apart in a tug of war. Bill Tibboles can now be informed that his team won only because a Martian bumped into Bob Christman and pushed him over. Then at other times during the year, the dif- ferent groups at BHS attended other schools' schools' Sports Day. Officers President .................................. An unusual presentation took place in the BHS as the Junior High students enacted the Ohio Story in song, dance, and drama. In observance of the Sesquicenten- nial, the Junior High devoted their annual music performance to a two hour panorama of Buckeye History. A narrator unfolded the history of Ohio, its first inhabitants-the ln- dians and French settlers. Various phases of history were highlighted by dramatic sketches, songs, and dances. lt was the story of stout men and brave women who, from savage wilderness made a great state.
