I946 A Senior THE COMET NEWS Senior Supplement Peers into the Past Remember The young and scared Treshmen oT '42? Now look aT Them-digniTied seniors who are ready Tor commence- menT. Theirs is an inTeresTing suc- cess sTory. Here is how one sen- ior Tells iT FRESHMEN, RAH, FRESH- MEN, RAH ---- High school aT lasT and we were so-o-o- Thrilled To be yelling our cheer from seaTs on The TirsT Tloor insTead oT on The shelT. There weren'T any class oTTicer elecTions ThaT TirsT year, buT on every one oT our Taces was a proud expres- sion as we elecTed sTudenT coun- cil represenTaTives. Those we se- lecTed had a hand in making The STudenT Council consTiTuTion. RAH, RAH, SOPHOMORESH We were worldly-wise sopho- mores and proud oT iT-proud, Too, because our parTy was a bang- up aTTair, and everyone had such a good Time square dancing. Lowly sophs ThaT we were, sTill honors came our way. Three sophomores were chosen To be on TThe ComeT sTaTT, an honor ThaT rarely comes To underclassmen. J-J , -J-U-N - - -l-I , -I-O-R - - - Juniors already! BuT Tempus Hd- geTs, so - - - we elecTed our TirsT seT of class officers. Joe Disandis Just Horse Sense Changing horses in mid-sTream has no worries for The class of '46. AlThough one superinTendenT, F. D. SwigarT, sTayed wiTh Them Tor Their enTire high-school course, They have had Three principals in Tour years: Edward Masonbrink-lsT semes- Ter, I942-43. George Rilling - 2nd semesTer I942-'43 and I943-'44. E. S. Glasgo - I944-'45 and l945-'46. No wonder The class OT '46 didn'T horse around. was president EliazbeTh ArnholT, vice-presidenT: Jackie Young, sec- reTary7 and Norm Eger, Treasurer. Three of The Tour were Trom Miss Bates' room! SelecTing class rings was a Thrill, even Though we didn'T geT To wear Them unTil spring. Our own Vince SchlicT was a mem- ber of The TirsT Tive on The B.H.S. sTaTe championship Team! ---S-E-N---l-O-R--- SENlORSl Big Time operaTors, aT lasT. We were The envy oT The underclass- men as we Took Those middle-aisle, down-TronT assembly seaTs. The class oT '46 was The TirsT To use The nominaTing commiTTee meThod oT electing class oiilicers. IT works well, we Think. Joe was elecTed presidenT again: Tubby Lepley, vice-presidenT: ElizabeTh ArnholT, secreTary: and Dale Campbell, Treasurer. Choosing class colors, moTTo, Tlower, inviTaTions and cards, all were oTher senior duTies in which we Took pride. STill we were nosTalgic as were being TiTTed Tor commencemenT robes. Too young To realize ThaT mem- bers oT Their own class would be going To war beTore peace could come, They wondered aT The anxi- eTy shown by parenTs and Teach- ers. However, school soon became a iumble oT Texibooks, newspa er headlines, and newscasTs. They anxiously waTched BaTaan and Corregidor Tall. They lisTened as radio broadcasTs Told oT The in- vasion oT Europe, of naval vicTor- ies in The Paciiic, oT The ieT-pro- pelled plane, The jeep, and The aTomic bomb. Then aTTer Three long years, They observed a solemn V-E Day program. Finally came V-J Day, LusT in Time Tor The class oT '46 To ave a peace-Time senior year. Classmates Enlist ln The meanTime, The war had aTTecTed Their class membership. When They were iuniors, Joe Ar- Tino, AnThony Brugnone, lrvin Mo- yer, Maurice WaTers, RoberT Pine, Gene Gerber, and Norm Eger had enTered The armed Torces. Ken Linder enlisTed early in his senior year. From The TaculTy, Principal Ed- ward Masonbrink, Samuel Cooper, and RoberT McCoy had gone OTT To The Navy. During Their. senior year, veT- erans began To reTurn. Carl Ar- Tino, L man Brown, Jack Camp- bell, gharles Keller, Roy Paul, STeve Valko, and Joe Sly ioined The class. Mr. Cooper Took up his old posiTion. VeTerans George Nelson, Dean Fisher, and Arch Krumm came To B.H.S. as new members of The TaculTy., LiTe began To reTurn Tio normal. The removal oT gas raTio ing made iT possible Tor The class I946 To follow The Redmen To o T-of-Town games. MeaT is again served aT class parTies. I-le was sTaTioned aboard ship in The SouTh Pacific as a pharmacisT maTe Tor Tour years. Joe Sly enlisTed during his junior year in I943. ATTer booT Training, he was senT To The Sou+h Pa- ciTic, and was sTaTioned on The U.S.S. HorneT as a seaman, TirsT class, Tor Two years. STeve Vallco was vice-presidenT of The STudenT Council aT The Time of his enlisTmenT in 1943.
