Smtx -'l'I111-1- SCIENCE OE GIQIDOLOGYH Sixty-Four PREFACE The Science of Gridology is the story of how, handicapped by lack of experienced players, Samuel Cooper, upon taking over the football coaching duties of Bellevue High School, was forced to rely mostly on juniors, sopho- mores, and five senior lettermen with which to build the 1939 edition of gridmen. Although final scores did not give Bellevue a single victory, statistics show that Coach Cooper built one of the best defensive football teams in the history of Bellevue High. After dropping the first two games by a compara- tively small margin, the Red and VVhite went on to play four scoreless ties and to lose two games by single touchdowns. The '39 team yielded twenty-seven lettermen, the largest number ever produced by a single squad in one year in the school's history. VVith seven- teen of these lettermen returning, at least one for every position, Coach Coop- er is looking ahead to another successful season next year. The Redmen lost one and tied two of their Little Big Four league battles and as a result took third place in the league standig. CHAPTER I, THE FOOTBALL SEASON. SEPTEMBER 15-Bellevue 0, Fremont 32 An Indian summer night brought out a capacity crowd to Harmon field to witness the initial game of the 1939 football season. Bellevue. unable to stop the aerial attack of Fremont's Little Giants, went down in defeat. How- ever, the inexperienced backfield of Bellevue performed well and showed great promise. SEPTEMBER 23-Bellevue 0, Alliance 47 Bellevue ventured forth into the confines of big league football, only to have the Alliance Aviators deal them a smashing blow that sent them sprawling back by a score of 47-0. The Redmen rallied in the third stanza and drove down to the Aviator's 8-yard line, but then lost the ball on downs. jim Callaghan's 30-yard run was one of the highlights of the game. SEPTEMBER 29-Bellevue 0, Tiffin Columbian 0 XYet to the skin and playing on a rain-soaked field, the Bellevue gridmen and Tiffin Columbian fought to a O-O tie under the lights at Harmon field. Bellevue pushed the Columbians all over the field in the first half, only to see the visitors take the show away from them after the intermission. The punt- ing of jim Barr. the plunging of jim Callaghan, the blocking of Bruce Bellard and Donald Oehling. and the tackling of Paul Didion, Captain Dick Schoen, and Bob Musser kept the Redmen fighting up to the crack of the gun. OCTOBER 7-Bellevue 0, Oak Harbor 0 The Redmen were foiled again in their attempt to get into the victory column as they fought to their second scoreless tie. The most sensational run of the year came in the first quarter when Dick Archer, Bellevue center, intercepted a pass on his own Z0-yard line and ran down to the visitors' 15- yarfl line. only to have the play nullified because of a Bellevue offside. or The Story ol Football FOOTBALL VARSITY Top: Str-plien Lewis. llanrolrl 4ll'l3.:'t'l', llnrohl Ifoos, llielmrml Sehoen, Tom l'nt1'iek. Fol- low these lads and their coach on their thrilling march that brought them within three points of the state title. Last December a new basketball coach took over the reins of the Red- men. Local fans were skeptical. Only three lettermen and a lot of untried juniors were available. However, out of that Coach Steve Lewis built him- self a reputation and gave Bellevue its best team in recent years. They won the Little Big Four title, inet big-time competition success- fully, won the district title, and gained praise from every person who saw them come within three points of upsetting the team that won the state title. CHAPTER l-OUR CHAMPIONS Let us introduce to you our champions: Coach Steve Lewis: He has become the most popular man in Bellevue with his pleasing personality and his knowledge of basketball. The team themselves describe him in three words which fit him perfectly. He is just one swell guy! Captain Bill McClain: Mac is one of the best basketball players ever turned out by Bellevue high school. He'll be a credit to any college. He scored 192 points in 19 games during the regular season at forward. Bob Baur: Here is one of the scrappiest players on the team. Bob was always tough in the pinch and hit his scoring stride in the district tourna- ment. Against Shelby he scored l9 points. Bob played center. Gordon Baur: This lad was one of the big reasons why Bellevue went to the state tournament. He wasn't the big scorer in the finals of the San- dusky tournament, but his 10 points and his unconquerable spirit against Ashland in the semi-Hnals spelled a Bellevue win. These three boys have played their last game for Bellevue, as they grad- uate this June with the class of '40, However, the following champions will be back next year to defend the league and district titles: Harold Foos: This lad of 6 feet 3 inches is scrap plus! Coach Lewis was going to make him mix it up in practice one night and ended up with a black eye from one of Harry's elbows. A forward by profession. Bob Hime: Swish! Two more points from mid-Hoor and as usual it is Bob Hime. He specializes from way out and thrilled tournament fans by practicing long ones before games. Tony Torrise: Go in and Fight! said the caption of the picture in a Columbus paper of Tony and Jim llarr. They forgot to say how hard Tony fought while he was in there! ol Basketball. jim Barr: -lim li:ul zz littlc ttmgli time iii gm-ttitlg stzurtt-cl, lint micc lu- stzwtcrl, lic wus twin. llc- lu-lpwl plvntx' wlicn xlCClZllll gut :1 vnu- ul' lm1litiw in tllc clistrict tm1i'n0y. A Tale CHAPTER ll- l Continued l very tough on December 15, but the Lewismen were not to be denied and they emerged on the right end of a 34-30 count. McClain and Bob Baur scored 10 and 9 points, and local fans talked for weeks about Cork Baur's long one from mid-fioor that put the game on ice. The next thing on the program for the Redmen was a 180-mile journey to southern Ohio where on the night of December 20 they whipped a strong Hamilton team. The Big Blue were tough on their home court and it was the first defeat they had suffered at home for a year. The final score was 28 to 22. McClain scored 12 points. Then after a night in a Hamilton hotel, the Lewismen moved to Middle- town where fatigue and a great Middie outfit spelled defeat by a 27-17 score. It was the first setback of the year, but the boys felt that the trip was very successful anyway. A strong Alumni basketball team caught the Redmen during Christmas vacation and gave them a severe 44 to 34 trouncing. The game was played on December 29 and four days later the varsity had to tangle with Sandusky. Despite the fact that the holidays had taken away much practice time. the Redmen gave the Blue Streaks a good licking by a 45 to 30 score to start out the new year right, on January 2. The first Little Big Four league game was played at Norwalk on January 5, and the locals were pressed to win from the Maple City lads 28 to 25. Nor- walk led most of the first half, but the locals took the play away from them in the last 16 minutes of the game. Another Little Big Four team fell before the rampaging Redmen on January 12 when the Port Clinton Sailors were repulsed 35 to 25 at Bellevue. Bob Hime finally hit his scoring stride as he pounded in 12 points for Belle- vue. Willard became the third straight league opponent to bite the dust when they fell 37 to 18 on january 19 in the local gym. Every man on the Bellevue bench saw action in the rout and seven of the eleven broke into the scoring column. Willard was able to count only four baskets the whole game. The next night Bellevue invaded the territory of the Oberlin Indians, and the local Redmen turned the tables on the home team by scalping the Indians 49 to 25. Bill McClain dropped in 15 points and Bob Baur marked up 10, and again Coach Lewis used every man on the local bench. Gloom settled over Bellevue on January 26 as echoes of defeat sounded through the corridors for the first time this year. Coach Vern Hoffman re- turned to his former stamping grounds and stamped the Redmen into the dirt with the aid of his stalwart Tygers from Mansfield by a 37-18 count. The local players were just too keyed up, for the game went to pieces under 01: Basketball 1111- 111-1'5N111'l'. 1'1'1111'111:11 1.1111 1-511111:111-11 111:11 1.11111 111-1511115 1Y11111'5Sl'11 1111- Q'1ll111'. 111-111-1'111- 1':11111- 11:11'1c 111 1111- 1111 151-111'11:11'1' 2 11111-11 1111- 111-111111-11 1'11ISl'11 1111-11' 11111111- 51-:151111 . . 1 . . .1 1111' 1l'l1l1lIl11lQ N111'11':111i 1111' :1 51-0111111 111110, .11 111 18, '1'1115 g':11111- 11:15 1111- 11151 1-111' 1111- 1'1-11. 1111111-, :11111 111111- 1111114111-1115 111-1'51111:111y 11L'S1Q'111'11 111' 1'11:11'11 1,1-1115. 1111111- 11:15 51'111'111g111115 XY1111 11. Bill McClain practically clinched his all-Ohio recogni- tion in this fray by scoring 10 points. The following Monday night the Redmen entertained the former charges of Coach Lewis, the Margaretta Polar Bears, in a band benefit contest. The class B quintet in our backyard were outclassed by the locals and Bellevue won 41 to 26. WE WIN DISTRICT TITLE On March l the Redmen entered the district tournament at Sandusky against Titiin Columbian. Bellevue's passing attack reached its peak, and they were unbeatable as they ran wild to defeat the Columbians 44 to 2l. Bob Baur and Bob Hime scored 14 and ll points respectively. The following night Bellevue trounced Shelby 39-31 as Bob Baur went hot with 19 points, the most any Bellevue player scored in a single game all year. Harold Foos was clicking very well on his special side shots, and he tallied 8 points. Ashland bit the dust a week later, on March 8, in a semi-final tilt. Gor- don Corky Baur was the hero, as he whipped in ll points and was directly responsible for the Redmen victory. He inspired his teammates enough so that, although they were off form, they were able to top the A's 30 to 26. For the second straight year Bellevue met Mansfield for the district title. This was precisely what the Redmen players wanted, for they still saw red every time Mansfield was mentioned because of that humiliating defeat in the regular season. Therefore, they went out for a victory, which they got by the lopsided score of 37 to 26. Mansfield was completely subdued and re- venge was the Redmen's! The third district title in the history of the school was won that night and it was a jubilant crowd of Bellevueans that returned home. VALIANT REDMEN AT COLUMBUS The following Thursday the Bellevue squad left for Columbus to com- pete in the state tournament against New Philadelphia who had already con- quered the locals and were favored to win the state title. Thursday morning a large gathering of B. H. S. students gave the lads a great send-off. When Bellevue met the Quakers that night, after a slow start they caught and pass- ed the favorites, much to the surprise of the experts and the glee of the 500 Bellevue rooters who had made the trip to the state capital. In addition to setting a new record in the 220 yard free style, Bob set a 440 yard free style record, negotiating that distance in 6 minutes, 47 seconds, thus breaking the old record by over 28 seconds. Bill Redd, junior diver and breaststroker, scored 30M points. Bill filled the place of Andy Stockmaster, who was lost to the squad most of the season through an operation. Charles Santoro, junior, and Frank Henry, freshman, were both free stylers. They received most of their points by being members of the free style relay team, which won its event in six of nine meets. The team usually was composed of Lloyd Byers, Bob Klein, Santoro, and Henry. Indications point toward a very successful season next year with twenty- three squad members, including six lettermen, returning. If swimming be- comes a major sport next year, Bellevue should have a swimming team ca- pable of entering major competition. rk :ir is is CHAPTER Il-THE MEETS The swimming season of 1939-'40 opened shortly before Christmas in a meet with Fremont reserves here. Since many of the Bellevue natators were swimming in competition for the first time, the team lost to its more exper- ienced opponents, 49 to 16. During the Christmas vacation a meet was arranged with an Alumni team which was composed of Charles XVehr. john Aigler, jean Bellard, and jack Terveen. This meet was very closely contested, the outcome being de- cided in the last event. Coming from behind to win the free style relay, the Varsity nipped the Alumni, 35-30. In a return meet at Fremont, their reserves trounced a Bellevue team, weakened by the loss of Andy Stockmaster, breaststroker. The Redmen were beaten by an almost identical score as before, 49-17. Harold Wright swam to victory in the first event, for Bellevue's only first place. The Aqua-Redmen's next foes were the Sandusky reserves, who also turned out to be conquerors. In a meet here, the Blue and White ducked the Bellevue swimmers, 47-19. Bellevue garnered but one first place, that by Bellard in diving. The next two meets were with the Mansfield varsity, and the team was defeated both times. The score of the first meet, held here, was 42-20. In the second, held in Mansfield, Bellevue ended with a desperate rally, win- ning the last three events, only to lose, 38-28. a Tale of Swimming SWIMMING TEAM Top: Robert Klein, Robert Euler, Donald Stoltlt, Donald liradford, Robert Herbel, Billy lie-dd, Hruce- He-llard, Eugene Bradford. Sandusky found a much stronger Bellevue team this time, winning by the closer score of 37-29. In the last home meet, the VVooster varsity defeated the Redmen, 43-32. Two records were broken in this meet. Bob Klein set a new school record of 2 minutes, 56 seconds in the 220 yard free style. Taylor of XN'ooster also set a new pool record in the 100 yard free style, negotiating the distance in 1 minute. 1 second. In a meet with the Oberlin College freshmen at Crane pool, in Oberlin, the Aqua- Redmen went down to defeat 43 to 23. llill Redd took first in div- ing and paced the medley relay team to victory for the team's only Firsts. This was the last meet in the regular swimming season. The following week Coach Cooper took a squad of live boys to the dis- trict meet in Toledo. Although they scored no points, they gave a good ac- count of themselves. They were: Harold VVright, Eugene Bradford, Bruce Uellard, Frank Henry, and Bill Redd. It is a tale of the sea, taking place on the good ship Hersport. Commanding the sturdy little craft is Captain Ellen Gar- ner, physical education instructor at Bellevue. The gala occasion of launching that boat was held the last week in Sep- tember when the soccer season was opened. In this early part of the voyage, the seniors were the victors, not losing a game. Because of stormy weather, the ship could not complete this part of the trip as was planned. Next the good ship Hersport followed a smooth basketball course. The teams were divided into two brackets, one consisting of inexperienced players, and the other, of those who had some experience. The Sloppy Joes, a group of Erst year sailors, won the championship for the former. In the latter division the middies of the Farmerettes and Macbeths, after a neck to neck battle, tied in the championship game to end the tournament with a tie for first place. As the Hersport neared the end of her journey, an interclass baseball tournament and a swimming meet were waged. However, the ship's captain was unable to reveal the winner of these events at the time this story was written. An individual ping pong tournament was also held near the close of the trip. Because the captain and sailors had done their best, the little vessel steamed triumphantly into port after a successful tour of the Sea of Sports. T' 3 5?- Va X72 IN MEMKDRIAM The passing of Arlene Kalies in January of her senior year left a va- cancy in the class of 1940 which could not be filled. Faculty and students remember her cheerfulness. friendliness, and reliability. In her quiet. un- assuming manner, Arlene engaged in many activities. Indeed. her presence was greatly missed this year in Dramatics. Journalism. Basketball. Socce1'. Aquatics. Girl Reserves. and Drum Corps where she served as Drum Major. Her sweet song of life is ended, but the melody lingers on.
