Walking ouf into the world of life are the enior elaoo Hicero S X. 1' f? ff,-x A igi -:si S l'?nln-. Kenny Fouts, President, Dave Scholz, Vice-President, Sandra Pearson, Treasurer: Katie Bartels, Secretary: Dale Rocchietti and Carole Stefan Student Council Representatives, gather for an informal class officers meeting. In the four years that we Seniors have been at Bellevue we have had many tirsts that no other class at Bellevue has ever had. We became the first class, from Bellevue, to win the Homecoming float con- test three out of the tour years. We became the first class to have a student teacher, Miss Donna Vance from Omaha University. We were honored by having Bellevue's first Foreign Exchange Student, Anna-Liisa Katainen, In this our last year we participated in many activities. The Sno-Ball and other dances were sponsored by the Senior Class, we were active in sports, music and the various clubs. The royalty and the two big nights of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom and Commencement brought honor to the Senior Class of 1959. ,12- ANNA-LIISA KATAINEN Through the impetus of the small, newly-formed American Field Service Com- mittee, a drive was started lost spring to raise interest and money for an exchange student. The students of B.H.S. responded generously, and their enthusastic in- terest made the possibility of an exchange student a reality. Thus it was that the senior class of i959 had the honor of having,as a member of their class, Bellevue's first exchange student, Anna-Liisa Katoinen, Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Anna-Liisa looks like a typical Scandanavian: tall and blond, with fair complexion, and a ready smile. So it was that an ocean was bridged and we came to know Anna-Liisa. Her generous smile, her friendly interest in everything and everyone, and her ready acceptance of new customs have made Anna-Liisa one of Bellevue's best liked students. While taking American Government, American History, speech and chorus, Anna-Liisa has been active in debate, and was elected vice-president of the B.H.S. mixed chorus. Confused at times by American slang but openly admiring of Bellevue's school spirit, the easy student-teacher relationship, and the friendliness of our small town -Anna-Liisa considers her year in the U.S. one of the greatest opportunities and honors in her life. -13... Despite having a losing season the team en- ioyed a full season of cheering Pep Clubs, rout- ing student bodies, and close, exciting games. ln the first game of the Ak-Sar-Ben Tourna- ment, held in the Chieftain gym, Bellevue played their arch rival and defending Conference Champ- ions, Plattsmouth. From the sound of the first whistle, Bellevue took the ball and led all the way to a 60-53 victory. lr1l958 Omaha Holy Name defeated the Chiefs by some SO points, but the defending Class A State Champions had a surprise in for them when -347 the host team iBellevuej took the lead four diff- erent times. With 3 minutes and 30 seconds left in the game the Fighting Chieftains held the State Champs, to follow by only two points for a morale building 39-37 loss. Game Captain Bill Woodrow sank a free throw in the last two seconds to put the seal on a 36- 35 win over Fairbury. For his ball-handling and the winning point Bill was named the Star of The Week by the Omaha World Hearld. Pat Manrose's long shots, Terry Jack's cor- ner shots, Bill Woodrow's rebounding, Gary Thras- her's free throws, Woody Dismuke's iumps, and coach Wood's scribbled signals on his blackboard will all bring back memories of the i958-59 bas- ketball season. Mr. Mancuso's team finished first in Belle- vue's own Freshmen-Sophomore Invitational, third in the South High Invitational, and seventh in the North High Invitational along with a seven- th in the State Meet. Gene Becstead was named Outstanding Wrest- ler of the Bellevue Tournament while Gene's teammate Jim Gebbie was named Outstanding Wrestler of the North Tournament. Sophomore Allen Eells captured the 95-pound State Championship. Allen was the only boy in the State Meet who was not defeated by a Nebraska wrestler, completing the Meet. Bellevue made the headlines when it was announced that the State Meet would be held in the Bellevue gym and when Mr. Mancuso's Fresh- men and Sophomores defeated Omaha South in Bellevue's Tournament. This was the first time that South had been beaten in any kind of a meet in the last four years and it was also the first time the State Meet was held outside of Omaha or Lincoln. ,wfvlvii if h J, Steve Watkins Jim Gebbie 165 145 2-3 North High Invitational Champion Fourth in State N.H.I.
