raa-FiBL, Many returning Belleville East students were surprised at how fast their summer went. The first day of school stormed upon us. “I had no idea when school started. I was in Boston having a good time when my parents mentioned something about my schedule, ' ' said one East student. “I was in New Mexico trying unwillingly to hitch a ride home when I got a letter from my mom saying to hurry up and get home before school started. replied another Lancer. I kind of anticipated it because I had nothing to do the whole summer, spoke another Lancer. Ready or not the school opened its doors in late August. The sight of crowds of people, teachers walking briskly to class with briefcase in hand, and freshmen with maps and compasses were familiar to many. The campus bloomed many colors as students gathered on the terraces to talk about their summer adventures, but for new students it was a totally new experience. Freshmen comments included. This place is huge! ; Where is ' D ' building 7 ; Look at all those seniors! The big news at East was a change in the administration. Mr. Curtis became our new principal. Nobody knew what to expect, but as time went on the student body began to appreciate his authoritative ability to command and lead Belleville East.

After a summer which seemed too short, the 1983-1984 school year began. All across campus, East students shared a feeling of uncertainty. Freshmen banded together to calm first day nerves while upperclassmen, who had bid farewell to the first principal at East during the 1982 1983 school year, gathered in hallways discussing the new guy . Rumors circulated over the summer had been very vague and curiousity was overwhelming. At last—10:10 a.m.! East students filled the gymnasium. The new guy , alias Mr Curtis, introduced himself to the crowd Mr. Curtis’ dedication was apparent in his opening speech. His statement of his goal for East to set the standards by which other schools are judged was greeted with a round of rousing applause. Mr. Curtis’ confidence and eloquence inspired East students at assemblies and other events throughout the year. Finding the principal at football, swing choir, or cross country practice was not unusual. Where East students gathered. Mr Curtis could usually be found somewhere in the crowd. Simply stated by a choir member at East: He said he wants to come to all of our performances. It’s great! He’s really involved. Although Mr. Curtis brought with him new traditions and ideals which were readily accepted by the Lancer student body, East students were able to teach the new principal some things. Mr. Curtis was treated to the work of the phantoms as well as other Loyalty Week traditions. The words of a dedicated Lancer express the feelings of East ' s Student body. The new principal? I think every school could use a guy like him.” R NEW FRCE RT Mr. Curtis is a well educated leader. He graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor ' s degree in social studies. He also holds a master’s degree in history and a specialists degree in school administra¬ tion. degrees he received as a graduate student at the Univer.sity of Illinois. 3
