All across campus, East students shared a feeling of uncertainty. Freshmen banded together to calm first day nerves while upperclassmen, who had bid farewell to the first principal at East during the 1982 1983 school year, gathered in hallways discussing the new guy . Rumors circulated over the summer had been very vague and curiousity was overwhelming. At last—10:10 a.m.! East students filled the gymnasium. The new guy , alias Mr Curtis, introduced himself to the crowd Mr. Curtis’ dedication was apparent in his opening speech. His statement of his goal for East to set the standards by which other schools are judged was greeted with a round of rousing applause. Mr. Curtis’ confidence and eloquence inspired East students at assemblies and other events throughout the year. Finding the principal at football, swing choir, or cross country practice was not unusual. Where East students gathered. Mr Curtis could usually be found somewhere in the crowd. Simply stated by a choir member at East: He said he wants to come to all of our performances. It’s great! He’s really involved. Although Mr. Curtis brought with him new traditions and ideals which were readily accepted by the Lancer student body, East students were able to teach the new principal some things. Mr. Curtis was treated to the work of the phantoms as well as other Loyalty Week traditions. The words of a dedicated Lancer express the feelings of East ' s Student body. The new principal? I think every school could use a guy like him.” R NEW FRCE RT Mr. Curtis is a well educated leader. He graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor ' s degree in social studies. He also holds a master’s degree in history and a specialists degree in school administra¬ tion. degrees he received as a graduate student at the Univer.sity of Illinois. 3 raa-FiBL, Many returning Belleville East students were surprised at how fast their summer went. The first day of school stormed upon us. “I had no idea when school started. I was in Boston having a good time when my parents mentioned something about my schedule, ' ' said one East student. “I was in New Mexico trying unwillingly to hitch a ride home when I got a letter from my mom saying to hurry up and get home before school started. replied another Lancer. I kind of anticipated it because I had nothing to do the whole summer, spoke another Lancer. Ready or not the school opened its doors in late August. The sight of crowds of people, teachers walking briskly to class with briefcase in hand, and freshmen with maps and compasses were familiar to many. The campus bloomed many colors as students gathered on the terraces to talk about their summer adventures, but for new students it was a totally new experience. Freshmen comments included. This place is huge! ; Where is ' D ' building 7 ; Look at all those seniors! The big news at East was a change in the administration. Mr. Curtis became our new principal. Nobody knew what to expect, but as time went on the student body began to appreciate his authoritative ability to command and lead Belleville East. LRNCER5 R55EH1BLE The East school year is hi-lighted by various assemblies. Traditional assemblies include the seasonal sports assemblies, two Loyalty Week assemblies, an intro¬ duction to the school year, and several pep assemblies. The winter sports assembly, which usually consists of short basketball games and wrestling matches, was changed to include the Lancer student body. This year’s competi¬ tions included an arm wresting contest and two tree-throw contests, the first of which determined the school champion. The second tree-throw match was between the faculty and the champion of the student body. Although the contest was extremely close, the student body claimed the victory. Loyalty Week represents the true feeling of the East student body; students are given the chance to unite for a common cause and support their football team in a contest of skill and ability. Loyalty Week is very busy, with each day designated as a different dress-up day, students working on class floats, senior girls competing in powder-puff Olym¬ pics. the election of the queen and escort, the spirit chain, and, of course, the football game. 4 4 4 9 PRRflDE (below) The freshman float was awarded second place, an unusu al event in East history The two weeks preceeding the parade were filled with lots of hard work for the Lancers who participated in float building. Students gathered at the Army Reserve Building to design and build a float to enter in the contest and the parade. The first week of float building passed with no sign of activity from the junior class. Freshmen, sophomores, and seniors worked hard on their floats while watching the junior’s empty flatbed and wondering if there was going to be a junior float. The seniors worked to create Garfield listening to a Victrola, keeping with the ’Rock ’n’ Roll theme. The “King of Pain” rested in his throne on the sophomore float, while a Lancer football player was so eager to fight that he had to be chained back on the freshman float. The juniors came through in great style, completing their float in only one week and taking first place in the float judging contest. P.PU Powder puff Olympics is just one of the many Loyalty Week traditions at East. To many senior girls it is the biggest and most important event other than the football game because it gives them a chance to show their Loyalty Week spirit and enthusiasm. A few weeks before Loyalty Week, girls signed up for ppo and met with their sponsors to design their jerseys and to choose a team name which incorporated the use of their sponsor’s name. This year the Baum Squad. Pat’s Blue Ribbons, Patton’s Pizzazz. T.D. ' s Talents, Blaies’ Bandits, and Bob’s Bullets battled in the various events which took place Each team appointed male cheerleaders to boost team spirit and to allow the guys to participate. The schedule of events was as follows: Monday- sack race, three-legged race, softball throw; Tuesday- 600 m. relay, obstacle course: Wednesday- tug of war; Thursday- volleyball. Every participant hoped that her team would ride in the parade on Friday holding the first place trophy, but only the members of Pat’s Blue Ribbons realized their dream. 15 FDDTBRLL LRNCER PDVRLTV The hi-light of the Loyalty Week activities is the crowning of the queen and the selection of her court. This year ' s Loyalty Week Queen was Michele Remecker. She was escorted by Scott Dukowitz. First runner-up Lisa Merryman was escorted by Brian Wegley. Kirsten Klauss was selected second runner-up. Her escort was Larry Schott. The nominees for Queen were: Kirsten Klauss, Lisa Merryman, Susan Rust, Jeanne Smith, Linda Townsend. Escort candidates were. Keith Billhartz, Jeff Bowen, Don Cornell, Scott Dukowitz, Jim Lugge, Larry Schott, Brian Wegley. The princess candidates for the junior class were: Monica Mohr, Ise Sooter, Tami Trover, Dawn Williams. Escorts nominated were: Brian Burkett, Steve Jacobs, Joe Miller, Steve O ' Neil. Sophomore princess and escort candidates were: Danielle Alves, Becky Ca llahan. Jody Geschwend, Allison Strano, Grant Blaise, Larry Lecompte, Rich Lockwood, Tim Meehling, Ed Rust. In spite of cold wind chill factors of -50° on several occasions, East remained open. Snow at Christmas added to the uncomfortable chill. The student body was reminded by the administration not to throw snowballs on campus, but some students decided to frolic in the snow anyway. The last day before Christmas vacation is fun-filled at East. Lancers gathered for the annual Christmas assembly. The student body listened intently as the Stage Band, Concert Choir, Treble Choir, Sophomore Choir, Orchestra, and the East dramatists performed Christmas songs and skits. The Christmas assembly was probably the most successful assembly of the school year. The stage band performed the Glenn Miller hit In the Mood , while the choirs performed favorite songs such as ‘Hallejuhah Chorus and Carol of Bells”. The Christmas skit was a radio play of a news announcer telling of a very frightening incident: Santa was reported shot down inside Soviet airspace. The newscast reported Santa to be carrying 24 Nikkon cameras with which he was photographing secret Siberian missle bases, which, according to the exclusive interview with Yuri Andropov, do not exist. Of course, parents visited school and were introduced to the East campus and their son or daughter’s classes, but the atmosphere was not the usual conference atmosphere Parents were sent a newsletter which had a mini-schedule which they were to fill in with their “schedule” for the evening. Parents were asked to attend classes following their student’s schedule. Classes were shortened to 15 minutes, and during study hall and lunch periods parents were invited to visit the cafeteria for refreshments. 0 ? Hanga, Chairman The Industrial Education Department offers classes in auto-shop, drafting, elec¬ tricity-electronics, metal working, wood working, construction, and welding. Mr. Konya, who is the head of the Industrial Education Department, said that the department is here to provide an opportunity for students to gain experience and to learn a major industrial occupation. He believes these classes are truly representative of industrial occupations in our society. Mr. Konya describes the shops in Industrial Education Department as “not just a place to keep busy, but as laboratories.” Students who go through the industrial education department will have the ability to identify career opportunities. One unique thing about the department is that everything employs the “hands on” technique. Students make things they can take home with them; it is not all theory. According to one teacher, “It is a practical-type program; it ' s the application of learning and theory. The staff of the department is highly- qualified. Mr. Konya feels the staff is difficult to match, since most of the teachers work in the same general areas. They teach during the summer months. When this school was built, there was no industrial courses included in the curriculm; the department has developed itself up from scratch. Industrial Education is very important in everyday matters and everyone should at least know a little about the subject, because it does come in handy at times. There are many jobs available in this type of education, besides it being a lot of fun to be in and a great learning experience. HOTE ECDNDmiC5 ITlrs. Hardirron. Chairman The Homemaking Department has the philosophy that every student needs and education in Home Economics for success in everyday living. The Homemaking curriculum is two-fold. First the Home Economics curriculum is designed to develop skills, appreciations, understanding, and attitudes needed to home and family life today. Secondly, the Homemaking program tries to provide in-school and on-the-job vocational training. The basic areas of Homemaking include foods, gainful work study, clothing and home, family and health. Foods include Intermediate Foods, Advanced Foods and Meal Planning. The work study program includes Food Classes dealing in clothing include Intermediate Clothing, Advanced Clothing, and Fashion and Merchandis¬ ing. Many classes deal with the home, the family, and health: Family Living I, Family Living II, Home and Furnishing, and Health Related Occupations. According to Mrs. Hardimon, Homemaking Department Head, A Homemaking Department must have cooperation. I feel that all the teachers have a good working relationship and get along well. We all like to teach.” The Homemaking Department tries to create a home-like atmosphere, that is a cheery place where students can feel at home and learn. The department has up- to-date equipment, such as, a micro-wave, a conventional oven, a child develop¬ ment lab, and new sewing machines. According to Mrs. Hardimon, “The depart¬ ment strives to appear orderly, neat and professional.” mHTHEfTlHTIC5 Ulr. Boyles. Chairman Mr. Boyles, who is the head of the twelve member staff math department, feels the qualifications of our math staff is better than most math departments; all the teachers have a master’s degree and many years of experience. The math staff emphasizes the basics very heavily at all levels. We don’t like to get into anything too heavy too often,” said Mr Dunn. When asked to rank Belleville East’s math department with other high-school math programs in the area, Mr. Boyles replied, East has the best math department, we re number one!” The record of the math team for the past fifteen years clearly can speak for the fine quality of the math department. East’s math students are very good at all levels, says Mr. Dunn. Our honor students work very hard, and we try to make them better.” The math department offers 16 different courses each year. A minimal competen¬ cy test was started in 1980 that ust be passed. One year of math is required for graduation. The math department is continually evaluating and improving its courses and materials so students can and will be able to compute problems confronting them in their own life in mathematical situations. Evaluating and improving also provides students with the mathematical skills, facts, and principles necessary for further mathematical training. Some say Math is all it’s about.” Every where you look math will be needed no matter how easy or difficult! PHY3CRL EDUCRTDN Ulr. 5nepp. Chairman The Physical Education Department has a two fold purpose: to teach the how and the why of fitness to students. P.E. teachers try to create a change in the life¬ style and physical habits of the people with whom they come in contact. They try to help them become physically fit. The department tries to install in its participants some fundamental lifetime skills and activities, such as golf, tennis, archery, outdoor education, and first aid. Coach Snep believes the department has to be more resourseful than many on- campus departments because it offers a more extensive program. There is one handicap, the lack of indoor space. This is why the department teaches courses that meet outdoors as well as in classrooms. It is important and good for students to take part in P.E. P.E. is also important because it is part of the total education process: a sound P.E. program compliments a sound academic pro¬ gram. The outdoor education class was started during 1980. Phy-Ed 52 □RIVERS ED. fTlr. Heinz, Chairman One of the most anticipated moments, in a high school student’s life is getting his driver’s license. It is a memorable and exciting time for most students. The East Driver Education Department teaches the basic mental and physical skills needed to be a safe driver. Mr. Heinz serves as the department head. Other members of the East Driver Education staff include, Mr. Elmore, Mr. Renn, and Mr. Ottness. Mr. Heinz would rank the East program as one of the best. He went on to say, “The East Driver Education curriculum is very good. We teach classroom and behind the wheel training together, and we treat Driver Education like a regular course. “We try to give all students who have the ability and opportunity to drive the necessary skill so they can become safe responsible drivers,” stated Mr. Heinz. Up to 350 students take driver’s education in one year. This figure doubles during the summer. Many of the students at East have heard that the driving age will be moved up to eighteen. This is not considered a fact. Mr. Heinz was asked what age he felt people should start driving. He replied, ”1 think sixteen is a perfect age. Some people may be mature enough to drive earlier, but not at all.” i M A 53 NRTURRL 5CIENCE fTlr. Baum. Chairman The main function of the Biology Department is to make the students more aware of their environment and themselves. The Biology Department also fosters the Ecology Club, which is not active at the present time. The main objective of the Biology Department is, “to help students learn as much about biology as painlessly as possible,” as Mr. Barth puts it. “We want to make students quite aware of the relationships of plants and animals.” One unique thing about the Biology Department is that it survives as well as it does in spite of its all elective courses; every year they have a full enrollment. Both Mr. Baum and Mr. Barth stressed that biology is important because of the need to know about yourself and the survival of plants and animals. Mr. Barth reiterated the point by saying, “We need to know about all our little critters that share the planet with us. What we do to the least of our little critters, we do to ourselves.” East’s Biology Department has an excellent, natural advantage with a large campus which can be used for the benefit of classes. Our field facilities and our supplies are probably superior to that of smaller schools. Our staff has a very broad back ground. Mr. Baum is the head of the Biology Department. 54 PHV5ICHL SCIENCE fTlr. Hollinberger. Chairman Belleville East ' s Physical Science Department offers college-level courses. Our Physical Science facilities are equal to if not better than some colleges, according to Mr. Hollmberger. He went on to explain that the Physical Science Department does not prepare students for a job. they prepare students for college. Students take chemistry and physics to fulfill college requirements. College courses, then, prepare students to get a job in a particular area. Our advance courses are equal in difficulty to general level college courses. The advanced physics classes are even coordinated with SlU-Edwardsville. According to Mr. Hollmberger, department head, We are pretty much a tradition¬ al department, a basic science department that is not way-out.” The department stays that way so colleges will accept the student ' s science background. The ultimate teaching objective of the Physical Science Department is to instruct students and let them apply that knowledge to everyday situations. 5DCIRL 5TLIDE5 fTlr. Gentsch. Chairman The courses offered by the Social Studies Department are; Civics 1-2, Civics 1-2C, Social Studies, World Geography, U.S. History 5-6. Also offered are American Government, American Problems, Physiography, Sociology, Psychology, and Eco¬ nomics. Students may register for any of the above courses or they may take any two of a variety of courses of 10 week mini-courses offered during the fall semester along with two more from another group offered during the spring semester. These mini-courses discuss everything from Colonial Life to the Nuclear Age. Mr. Gentsch, Social Studies Department Head, said the main function of the Social Studies Department is “to teach American heritage and be a guide for future citizenship. This makes for well-adjusted ladies and gentlemen.” Mr. Gentsch stated we have a super Social Studies Department. “We have fun in our teaching,” he said, “but we still take it seriously. You still can have fun and learn.” Mr. Gentsch concluded, “Learning about history is very important in a student’s high school career. Everybody is going to be a citizen of the U.S. for the rest of their life. Knowing the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen are the most important things that you can learn.” imC LIBRARY fTlr ClaussEr. Chairman The Library contains nonfiction books, magazines, and reference books, and is open to students from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Last year a new security system was installed to prevent what was becoming the increasing number of missing books. This method has worked very well, according to library sources. The Learning Center takes up the other half of the second floor of A Building. Fictional books, audiovisual equipment and material, and typewriters are all in the Learning Center. The Library and Learning Center are helpful places for studying and doing some research or just catching up on assignments. The Library And Learning Center have a total collection of 18,782 books. 3,424 of these books are fiction and the remaining 15,538 are non-fiction. An average of 10.600 books are checked out each year. The Library and the Learning Center are staffed by Mr. Clausser, who is the mam person in charge. m MM M mm mm 111 2M PiEmEDlHL ED. ITlr. Rice. Chairman The Remedial Education Department has three main functions. The first function is to help students who otherwise could not function correctly in a normal classroom setting. These students have normal I.Q.’s, but they have some problems with dealing in a classroom situation. The second function is to teach the trainable mentally handicapped students. These students come to school to work under constant supervisio n. The Remedial Education Department focuses on gearing these students to work successfully in the community in which they live. The third function of the department is to help the autistic student. These students do not communicate well and require a large amount of personal attention. The staff tries to improve their communication skills through basic, repetitive exercises. According to Miss Scandrett, Remedial Education teacher, “Every child is an individual with different needs that the teachers must find a way to meet every day.” She went on to say, “It’s our hope that each student who works through our remedial education program will be a valuable asset to any community in which he or she chooses to live. (front) Angie Feder (back row) Laura Phillips, Craig Coelho, Ty Heslep. Missy Halwachs. EDITOR ' S PROGRRfTl It’s hard to believe that we’ve finally finished drawing layouts, typing copy, and searching for the cropping tool. (Did anyone ever find one that wasn’t broken??) After a crazy year, we all have a chance to sit back and thumb through the finished product. Deadlines can be rough, can ' t they? I am glad that we made it through without losing our sanity. I owe thanks to so many! To Mr. Hott- We really owe many thanks for his patience and understanding. It can ' t be easy to work with an unexperienced staff led by an unexperienced editor. Thanks for putting up with me. I realize that I’m not easy to work with! To the staff-1 sure can be mean, can ' t I? Thanks for not giving up when things weren’t running smoothly. I’ve had a super time and I have made a lot of great friends. The best way to conclude would probably be to introduce the people that are replacing me. Good luck to Debbie Noonan and Maria Rigas, co-editors for next year’s book. Again, thanks to everyone for your support. Good luck in the future!! Special thanks to Mr. James Colgan (left) and to Mr Ron Isom (right) for their assistance with our yearbook photography and graphics. The yearbook staff also would like to thank the following people without whose help this yearbook could never have been completed: Ed Sudgen - yearbook company representative Courtney Russell - cover design Tom Pour - photography projects Frillman Photography - underclassmen and faculty pictures Cedarleaf Photography - club pictures Belle-Flair Photography - club pictures Hitesh Patel - computer graphics Mr Fred M.
