He was telling a nice familiar bedtime story to an attentive audience when things began to go wrong. Of course, when doing the story in the form of a play magical things can happen that would not if it were an ordinary story, but Jack was totally unprepared for the events that were to come. One by one famous story characters were mysteriously thrown out of the story book none of whom were remotely related to the story he was telling. Not only can’t Jack figure out how this strange event happened, but he can’t figure out how to correct the problem. And such a problem it is tool Jack realizes that the longer the well known characters remain out of their stories, the greater the danger that someone will come along to read one of the famous stories and find the central character missing! What a disaster that would bel But what’s worse is that the longer the characters remain out of their stories, the more likely it is that they will change to the point of affecting their chances of returning to their homes. However, clues do begin to form. Each of the characters remembers the incident of their eviction being preceeded by a tingly feeling. Furthermore, a few of the characters even remember seeing a strange creature lurking about the pages of their stories prior to the tingly feeling. The composite picture of the creature as described by the few characters brings to Jack’s mind an old story once told to him long ago by his grandfather about a creature known as the Woozgoozle. Now the Woozgoozle was a very mischevious creature who was relatively unknown, but who was certainly capable of bringing about the set of wierd circum¬ stances such as the characters now found themselves in. So a search commences for the Woozgoozle. Just as the characters were getting close to finding him, the Woozgoozle bursts out of hiding and with his mysteri¬ ous powder freezes all but Jack. Through some artful persuasion on Jack’s part, we come to discover that the reason the Woozgoozle caused all this trouble was that he was jealous of the other characters’ fame. All he wanted was a little recognition. Again Jack artfully persuades the Woozgoozle that while fame and fortune were nice things to have, they were also things that could trap people into always having to do those things that made them famous. In other words, be happy with yourself and don’t try to be something you’re not. True happiness is finding your own WE THE RCTS I. Fame 2. Ben 3. Maple Leaf Rag 4. Baton Twirler 5. PIPPIN is the first-born son of the Emperor Charlemagne. An extraordinary young man, talented and handsome he is, nevertheless, obsessed with the ' need to be completely fulfilled’. At the same time that PIPPIN is Charlemagne’s son, he is also a modern young man and al¬ though the musical is set in the 8th Century, it evokes modern times as well. While trying to find himself PIPPIN either fails or becomes bored with his attempts as a scholar, soldier, at sex, as a revolutionary, at domesticity and even the ruler of the Empire. He will not settle for anything less than the extraordin¬ ary, but, in the end does settle for the ordinary — in the persons of a wife and child and—perhaps lives happily ever after. Amid a dazzling display of magic in the opening number MAGIC TO DO, led by the Leading Player, PIPPIN is born. He grows up and stakes his claim to an extraordinary life ( CORNER OF THE SKY ). In trying to follow in his father’s footsteps he soon discovers that war is not the way of life for him. Sex then follows in orgiastic measures. Guided by the Leading Player’s eloquent description of the SIMPLE JOYS,’ he finds prompt encourage¬ ment from Grandmother Berthe to put achievement aside for a time and try the greater pleasures in NO TIME AT ALL. PIPPIN happily agrees to chance the pleasures of the flesh but quickly tires of it after being overwhelmed by a swarm of lov- lies in WITH YOU. Step-mother Fastrada then proceeds to plot both PIPPIN s downfall and the murder of her husband. Bored with sex and apparently inspired by politics PIPPIN rallies a band of revolu¬ tionaries around him to dethrone the king. He murders his father while the latter is at prayer at Arles. Finding that his reforms are impractical and, reforming the reform, he winds-up a despot himself. The Leading Player then heeds PIPPIN ' S plea and amazingly restores his father’s life. Almost defeated by his failures, he is taken in by a widow with a small son and a large estate. Needing a man to do the chores Catherine seductively tries to convince him that she’s an ordinary KIND OF WOMAN, PIPPIN is not convinced, telling her he’s EXTRAORDINARY” and not cut out for do¬ mesticity. Following a LOVE SONG PIPPIN leaves, whereup¬ on Catherine tearfully states I GUESS I’LL MISS THE MAN.’ In the finale, PIPPIN, avoiding the choice of martyrdom through a spectacular suicide by fire (and though stripped of everything) chooses instead to hopefully survive domestically with Catherine and son. MOOD DKJVS A student donates an ounce for the effort Thi s wasn’t a giant slumber party. East students partici¬ pated in the most successful blood drive held at this school. A pint was given by each of the 288 students. The donor was 200 students and East topped the goal making the day a success for the American Red Cross. The following East students participated in the McKendree Invitational Model limited Nations held March 1801. All the East delegates displayed an outstanding performance in their committees. Many were well rewarded for their performances. Lord Chesterfield • ■ s i?- ihie+A . S ' « ' • r Ai :‘s Sr?SRr-. Ruth Heiligenstein Leaving East for Ruth Heiligenstein is not a simple assign- ment. She looks upon East as excellent and qualified educational complex. and feels that students who seek the best education can get it here if he desires. What she enjoyed the most is the compatability of teachers, stu¬ dents, and administration. Mrs. Heiligenstein’s education includes a Bachelor ' s De¬ gree from SIU Edwardsville and a Masters from the Uni¬ versity of Illinois. Her teaching experience consisted of teaching assignments. Freeburg Grade School, Signal Hill, BAC, and lectures at SIUE. Her philosophy throughout the years has been to take a student as far as he can go. If he can walk, team him to run. Mrs. Heiligenstein’s future plans include some travel, vol¬ unteer work educational seminaars, and golf. mi KSZJKSSS Elizabeth Green Elizabeth Green has taught for twenty-four and one- half years. Thirteen and one-half years have been spent teaching English. Mrs. Green’s teaching experience has been divided in two parts. During her earlier career she taught at Webster School in East St. Louis, five years at Signal Hill, and five years at Belleville Township High School. During these years she was very active in speech and theater. She then took time out to have and care for her family. Mrs. Green received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Missouri. She then concluded her graduate work in speech at Northwestern Universi¬ ty and the University of Wisconsin. Her greatest joy was directing plays. She enjoyed mold¬ ing the actor students and the close association with students in doing extra curricular work. During her years at East she has primarily been a class¬ room teacher. She has had the pleasure of watching students learn and mature. Mrs. Green believes that when a mutual trust occurs between teachers and students, learning can take place. 92 SDJZOKJMjCV SPSAKJM ■ • • All those decisions!!
